Ch-ch-ch-changes! April 17, 2022 11:25 AM Subscribe
Hey MetaFilter! I have some happy/sad news: I’ve taken another job! I will still be around here, but professionally I’ll be moving on.
When we went through the GDPR & CCPA compliance process in 2020/2021, I realized that I actually loved the work. With all of my kids in school full-time as of this year, I started to feel like a traditional 9-to-5 would be better for my family – when my kids were littler, it was great that I was free during the day and working in the evening! But now that my oldest is about to start high school and my youngest is in kindergarten, they have all these after-school activities and things, and my schedule is opposite theirs. I talked with the MeFi staff about it around Thanksgiving last year and began doing some professional training in privacy & compliance, and opened my job search in January of this year with the team cheering me on. (It's a great feeling to have coworkers who support you in a job search; no sneaking around interviewing on the down-low!)
And after some searching to find the right place to be, I have accepted a new role that I begin in May. It’s pretty corporate, which will be a big change for me!, but they’re very flexible about remote work and family commitments. It also has a big emphasis on learning new things and cross-training in different roles, which will be a great fit for me personally. I’m really excited to begin a new chapter.
I will still be hanging out here! And I’ll be moderating on weekends for a while, and subbing from time to time when coverage is needed. My departure’s been in the works for a little while longer than cortex’s; it’s just coincidence that I happened to accept a job shortly after he made his decision, and we’re both working to make sure the transition is smooth!
So I'll say this to you, my friends, with all the love in my heart and all the wisdom of the universe: Take it sleazy.

Congrats, EM, and thanks for all your work here over the years. I know the rest of the mod team will miss having your perspective and eye for detail and organization in the mix; I'm glad to know we'll both still be dinking around on the site.
There has been such an everything-all-at-once feel to things this Spring so far, but I know finding your way to this has been a long time coming, and I'm so very glad it has lined up to give you new opportunities for professional growth, as well as a greater degree of financial stability that matters so much for someone raising a passel of kids.
Thanks again for being here. Smell ya later.

Eyebrows! Congratulations!
Your excellent opportunity is our loss, but I'm truly delighted that you'll be around modding on occasion as well as being here in a non-mod capacity - the comments you post about your various areas of expertise (religion, local politics, motherhood) are some of my very favorite things on MetaFilter.
I'm so glad you've had supportive colleagues during the transition, and I hope the new place treats you fabulously and respectfully.
( ... your oldest is about to start HIGH SCHOOL? I'm sorry, that's unpossible.)
Truly, I'm so happy for you! Huge congratulations on landing a well-earned new job that can make excellent use of your many talents!

OH I KNOW, I find it very distressing! He's also about to be taller than me, like probably later this month.

Awesome! I'm jelly. This is something I'm interested in too; I've had the CIPP cert since around the time it was introduced, but it's been tricky to drum up business. I hope the adjustment is swift and you keep enjoying the work! Thanks for all your effort here over the years.

I love the sensibility behind your comments, and the breadth of knowledge you bring to participating here -- so, selfishly, I am glad we aren't losing you entirely!
As for the compliance work: if that's your bag then enjoy it. :7)

Congrats, Eyebrows! Privacy and compliance is super interesting, and with new regulations going into effect across the US and the world, there's no shortage of need for experts in it. So glad you found your groove.
