Short site outage earlier this morning March 21, 2022 7:48 AM   Subscribe

The site was down for a couple of hours this morning; resolved now and we're looking into what triggered it. Sorry about the inconvenience, y'all.

Looks like it was an issue with a load spike on our database instance tied to some otherwise normal nightly backup activity; frimble slapped the appropriate part of the jukebox to get things running again, and we'll look into the specifics of what happened so we can hopefully avoid a repeat of the situation.

Thanks for fixing it.

I was very much afraid I was going to have to do actual work at work. Thankfully crisis averted.

I felt a twinge of JRun nostalgia.

Yay! Thanks for fixing.

Status.Metafilter.com was still reporting that the site was up and available even when it didn’t appear to be for what it is worth.

It's OK, I didn't have anything to add anyway.

Yeah, this ended up being an unusual failure mode of the sort that page doesn't account for, which is, y'know, a neat trick. Learn something new every day.

A bunch of services hockey-sticked on downdetector this morning especially Google & Apple stuff; not sure if related but, yeah, definitely coincided with some 'bad internet weather' fwiw

For me the site was down for just short of 4 hours, I was actually starting to worry that Cortex might have deliberately thrown the power switch and stomped off in a huff never to return!

Honestly, even in the worst of all possible worlds I'd still leave the engine running and let people know where the bus was safely parked before I fucked off. It's not my football to take home.

In the post-PDT weerie hours, I was thinking 'oh well, just another manifestation of the Great Unraveling.'

specifically, it's your sign - it lacks a plain white professional background and is not printed in comic sans per community standards

also, we have been getting noise complaints - specifically, a lot of squawking - you aren't keeping chickens are you? that's against our rules

you see that house where the patels live? it used to house plastic.com - that green house where the millers are? kuro5hin - and that mountain of gravel near the entrance? that was adequacy.org - it was so toxic, we had to bury it under tons of little rocks

we are the homeowners association - do not attempt to game us, we will own you

It’s not my football to take home.

While I greatly appreciate the sentiment, there might be another place where it would be beneficial to deploy it. I’m well aware it won’t be easy, but maybe it needs doing.

Short Site Outrage my new album title.

I think I'd go with "Unscheduled Outrage" but then, maybe "Scheduled Outrage" is better.
