179: Calendrical Is Totally A Word November 30, 2021 3:32 PM Subscribe
In our triumphant return to posting podcasts at the turn of the month, Jess and I talk about time management and reminders, complicated conversational dynamics, the assassination of JFK (but only very briefly), and a bunch of somewhat more MetaFilter-centric things. We time-managed our way up to about 93 minutes. Also I play a euphonium.

Jessamyn: Thanks for the kind words about my fiction-related front page posts. It's good to know that you particularly like the ones where there's a jumping-off point to talk about something beyond the specific story/stories. And those threads do, reasonably, get more comments, so I figure you're not alone!

If anyone would like a deeply nerdy calendar-based good time, may I recommend Reingold and Dershowitz's Calendrical Calculations.

Man, you guys are on all my weird interests this month and I am kind-of offended you didn't emergency skype me to talk about calendar conversions, pronouncing "Chrysostom," or swearing in and/or about the Bible. Why do I even have a theology degree??? Rude.

Fun podcast.
As a kid, I always wanted to play bassoon. In eight years at three schools, none ever had a working bassoon. So, I took up trumpet ('cause I had a grandfather's instrument) and cello (for no particular reason, though I could invent some now) in school. I'm not complaining - they were great instruments and I had fun. But, this makes me wonder if I should get a bassoon. I've also currently got more instruments than I know how to play. Including a really shitty swapmeet baritone horn (or something similar), which is a lot of fun to play even if one key is sticky and I'm using the wrong mouthpiece. I should probably become competent on a few more of them before buying new ones.
There's something interesting about the impulse to point out to people that one isn't insulting them by liking the act of filing, even if they don't enjoy it. I find myself doing the same thing and sometimes cringe a bit, 'cause I want to believe we all accept that one can like different Star Trek episodes without it being regarded as a personal attack. But, also, expressing that without implicitly endorsing all the shitty, insincere racist/sexist/libertarian talking points that use the same keywords is a real challenge. I guess it never hurts to say, "it's okay if we disagree about this."

Thanks for the shoutout! (And, Cortex, you aren't the only one who thought I was "Yankeefrog.")
Incidentally, my next picture book has its roots in that AskMe about an address in Vienna, which you mentioned on the podcast. The information I got from Arco in that thread started me thinking about the best way to tell my mom's story. Ultimately, I wrote it as a picture book. It was a big challenge to be true to the reality of my family history in a way that was appropriate for picture-book-age kids! It's currently being illustrated and it will come out in 2023. I'll post it to Projects when it comes out, but I thought I'd let Metafilter know that that particular AskMe is still resonating in my life.
PS: Both times it appears in "chag sameach", the "ch" is pronounced the same way as in loch. If you can't quite manage that throat-clearing sound, you can just pretend it's an "h" and nobody will judge you.

I took the podcast audio to otter.ai and got a decent automated transcript out of, uh, the first 30 minutes, whoops.
