Hurricane Ida Check-In August 27, 2021 11:58 AM Subscribe
This is a place for Gulf-area Mefites or any who are/will be affected by Hurricane Ida to check in. I know we have a lot of NOLA people, for instance. Stay safe y’all!
Gulf coast of Mississippi, checking in. Latest news suggests we will be okay. Also, my kids just tested negative for COVID after an exposure at school, so everything is coming up skewed today.

Gretna (McDonoughville), checking in.
We have stayed mainly because we have elderly pets that I'm not sure can survive an evacuation.

We made it to Houston this afternoon from New Orleans. Getting really anxious about all my friends who stayed.

Mandeville (north shore of Lake Pontchartrain). So far just rain and some slight wind gusts. We have a whole house generator so fingers crossed that the natural gas remains in place.

Our block in the sliver by the river still has power and internet, even though almost all the blocks around our house have power out.

Uptown, near Touro. No power since lunch, but no flooding. Quite windy.

Lost power about 90 minutes ago. T-mobile cell service is out. A front windowpane broke due to a wayward tree branch but we got it temporarily covered. Kids barely know anything is happening.

Been thinking about all the people in the area suffering right now and in the days to come. Some of the video and photos of the storm and its impact are absolutely astonishing. Stay as safe as you can, all. Sending good thoughts your way.

There’s a lot of people in low-lying surrounding areas that might not have homes to come back to, and there’s been some serious damage to some buildings even within the city. We are certainly not out of the woods yet, but my family is safe for now.

We bailed on Friday.
It's kind of funny, Friday morning I woke up and we'd been thinking about evacuating just to avoid a Zeta situation where we didn't have power for 4 days and it got unpleasant. But I was watching the morning tracks and whatnot and going "no, this thing looks bad," so I booked an evacuation hotel. By midday we were debating whether to leave Friday evening.
I had to take the car in and I plopped down for a couple hours. Watching the news conferences for that little bit and I was like "okay we need to go tonight." We started packing when I got home and keeping an eye on it and eventually got to the point where it was like "okay no just grab whatever we can and assume we're not coming back."
I am not of an age where a frantic midnight drive is a good time anymore but I suspect waiting until Saturday would've been miserable.
We'll see how things shake out but as of now we're watching footage and the news feeds like "even if we have a place to go back to, do we want to? Do we want to do this again? Say what you will about this random town we're in but we probably won't have to hurricane evacuate again."
I kinda feel like we got away with one but we'll see what morning brings.

Passing along a message from tivalasvegas: he’s all ok, but lost internet for the time being. With the power expected to be out for so long, he'll be offline for a while.

Yeah they're saying a week without water for us and 3 weeks without power as a conservative estimate and even if we were dying to race back, that's not going to cut it. We'd been talking about getting out of hurricane country anyway (at least the coast) and our lease was up anyway. Maybe we just relocated.
We both liked NOLA and weren't in any hurry to leave but this evacuation has gone basically perfectly and it was still a nightmare. I also don't have many of these left in me. So maybe it's time!

We evacuated north at about 9pm last night and are safe now, but fucking exhausted.
I am someone who typically loves heat and humidity but this was not that. It was hotter inside the house than it was outside. Somewhat stupidly I locked the chickens up in the washroom so it smelled like chicken shit everywhere. We went out to the car every couple hours to listen to not-particularly-useful radio updates.
Really dangerous, life threatening heat right now for a million Louisianans.

Gonzales here (about an hour wnw of new Orleans). By a miracle we got power back on Monday so we've been having friends and family over to wash clothes and stuff since a generator won't do that. Got some trees down and some minor roof damage but that leaves us getting off very light.

Flash flooding like I've never seen in NYC. Over a foot of water on my block and I'm not in a coastal flood zone.

That's crazy. We just moved back down here from MD and saw news that an apartment building on our old street flooded extremely badly. This storm really had some legs. Hope you and yours are ok.

The generator s called "storm responder 6500" does not like to be wet, even a little bit.
Halp I need damp rid for an emergency generator. Luckily the rain cooled off everything to 80 degrees

Wireless broadband in New Orleans works very well though. They run off a diesel generator on the Falstaff tower. Although if your house is surrounded by live oaks, it s very difficult for you to get signal.
