[MeFi Site Update] May 24th May 24, 2021 12:42 PM Subscribe
Hello Metafilter!
Please find my 4th update on the state of the site below.
Reminder: I will be the only mod monitoring this thread so please be patient as I reply to your feedback and questions.
If you have any questions or feedback not related to this particular update, please Contact Us instead. If you want to discuss a particular subject not covered here with the community, you’re welcome to open a separate MetaTalk thread for it.
Technical Changes
- New mod note style is active on MetaTalk as well now
- Frimble fixed a couple small bugs with the maps API rework
- We’re still resolving the YouTube short link bug reported earlier this month.
General Projects we are working on
- Still working on the Privacy Policy draft, I will make sure to share more details as soon as possible.

BIPOC Advisory board
- The meeting minutes for our most recent meeting on April 27th are now posted on the BIPOC Advisory Board page.
At our last meeting on April 27th, we discussed expectations for board members’ access to meeting channels as well as requirements/limits for board members’ attendance and missing meetings. This took up a chunk of meeting time, but it was a very necessary conversation to lay out a strong and healthy foundation for meetings moving forward.
- Thyme will be reaching out to board members who have been absent from meetings to follow up and sort out any issues regarding participation.
The group also explored the question of non-BIPOC moderator participation and presence at meetings via Slack; whether that would be in the best interest of BIPOC participants, and if there was an alternative meeting set-up that would allow for non-BIPOC moderators’ input and insight, in conjunction with the maintenance of a safe and open space for BIPOC to discuss amongst themselves. Thyme will facilitate meetings in a manner that will allow for BIPOC to comfortably discuss amongst themselves, while creating a separate space for discussions that may require MeFi staff’s insight to questions that Thyme is unable to answer.
- I also popped in and presented an update on the Microaggressions, Guidelines and Content Policy pages: what we added/updated and how we are using them in the mod day-to-day work.
- The remaining agenda items were set aside for discussion at the next meeting, which is in the planning stages. More to come!

Reporting back on feedback from previous Metas
- I’ve started going over feedback from previous MataTalks and I’m now tracking it internally.
- In the next few weeks I will start triaging it and collecting feedback from the team to report back in these threads.

I'm curious what happened in the other 55 minutes or so of discussion?
Maybe there's some confusion here - are the time notes actual notes on how long discussion took, or how much time was initially budgeted to that topic? Because there are times allocated to the undiscussed topics, and at least one of the discussed topics has enough notes (~3 pages) to seem like it went on longer than the stated 10 minutes.

Yeah, that smacks of the universal meeting law of everything running past alloted times.
A fun internal metric is to note agenda time, versus actual time!

Correct, we basically allotted rough estimates for each agenda item, but each took longer (as
it usually happens) and we decided to keep going instead of ending our conversations short.
We ran out of time by the end of the Microaggressions, Guidelines and Content Policy item.
