Just a thank you (can I do that?)

I find that I move in and out of Metafilter and MF participation as the circumstances of my life dictate, but this last time, tipping my toe back in, I'm struck by how comfortable and affirming it feels to reacquaint myself with this part of the world. I know this place is the product of many people (and mods; the best moderation on the web), so I figured I'd thank you all. Thanks for making this wonderful place.

My recent moment of MeFi appreciation is remembering when I was in Berlin a few years ago around my late December birthday where I knew no one in the entire country. I have complicated feelings re: my birthday and have a lot of abandonment/isolation issues attached to it. On a lark, I put an IRL meetup request for something around my birthday, and several MeFites responded and I had one of my most memorable birthdays with strangers who I will likely never meet again and whose names and faces I barely recall, but whose graciousness and kindness I will always be grateful for.

I've been on MeFi off and on for two decades now. It's the most remarkable place - a corner of the internet that seems to have hardly changed as the rest of the online world has contorted into awful and unrecognizable things. MeFi is still here, still human, still full of wonderful links and functional conversation, thanks to every mod and member. <3
