If you feel up to it, please take a photo of something nice (anything that makes you feel good) and share it with all of us. It can be something on your desk. Something pretty you have hanging on the wall. Or maybe something interesting in your backyard, porch, stoop or balcony. Cute dog & cat photos are encouraged. I just want to look at something pleasant and nice. Stay safe and remember to be kind to yourself and to others.
This is me and my dog Truman, right now. Truman's birthday was yesterday. He's 8 years old. We didn't get to go to the dog park or petsmart, but we did lick a Fage yogurt container clean and get shredded cheese sprinkled on our kibble last night.

My visual social media output is down a little because I no longer take my phone when I go for walks outside (don't want to wash it). I've tried to be part of the solution here and me and some other locals are doing a monthlong Spring Bird Count, people keep track of the birds they see, report it to us, we collate and learn things about our bird population. So I've been at home keeping my feeders full. This photo isn't much but the little pack of goldfinches in the area is BACK and they're golding up and it's been great to see them again.

This is Dusty. He recently went through some oral surgery (his first ever trip to the vet) and is doing much better. He was adopted out of fear of an uncertain future when his previous owners moved out of country. Based on some recent interactions with the previous owners, we determined he is at least 23. That's quite old for a chinchilla (the vet folk - ACCESS in LA, if you are in need of an exotics vet, are absolutely awesome - declared him the oldest they had ever met by several years).
We've finally modified his environment so he has more autonomy. The pillows pictured here are a ladder so he can clamber down from his cage on demand and wander - this leads to some challenges, like walking around, and the occasional pee spot, but he seems to have given up on chewing on random things (except for a copy of Murakami), so it's working for now. It's been an interesting process, since it was timed with the quarantine, so we've been joking that we radically expanded the scope of his environment while reducing our own, and are effectively living in the same cage.
He's not terribly social, but it's been interesting to measure changes with the new options. I'd hazard he is less defensive about space since he has more, so he will come up to us and hang out if we lie on the floor (he hates being picked up, but loves a good scratch). Having an animal that lives full time in a cage is an awkward and somewhat dispiriting investment. We go to the Roar Foundation on occassion and they always take pains to note that they consider their housing of animals at best as possible relief after a life of misery and imprisonment, and that's very much in the spirit of why he is where is he now, since likely he would have had few options otherwise.
But that doesn't close the question of what his quality of life is. Unlike a mouse or rat, it's hard to ascertain how much he knows us, which isn't his problem nor does it really change our obligation, but it can make it tricky when trying to figure out exactly how to provide comfort. And we've wondered more than once over the past decade about his mortality, since he never really seems to change or age. He's really taken to the pillows, which, while anthropomorphizing to some degree, seems like he can adapt and relish some newfound luxury.

A field of Colchicum speciosum / meadow saffron on my midday walk yesterday. I keep photographing these guys, they've been up for maybe three weeks and will fall away soon to return with their spring green flush. They're in a nurseryman friend's field where they used to grow them commercially.

This is my pumpkin guy. Some people find him alarmingly exuberant. He can get rather ... ebullient, but I like it.
This is a hummingbird I saw on a recent walk. Getting to see birds like this up close is one reason I really like still having a camera with a fairly powerful optical zoom - Canon PowerShot, 30x optical zoom). I don't think to bring it with me all the time, and it's definitely a bit more to remember than just my phone, but it's really nice to be able to zoom in on tiny distant things.
Thanks for asking this, Fizz, and to everyone who's sharing nice things to look at!

I've been posting lots on Instagram to keep boredom and loneliness away. Here's an adorable little video of Figlet falling asleep while keeping me company in my home office.
My other dog Taco is recovering really nicely -- here's him after his bandage change (who knew cohesive wrap/coban came in so many colors/ patterns?!) He was so mad, he didn't even look at me until we got home. Like, when the vet techs brought him out to the car he literally turned the other cheek and looked away from me 😂

My cat is still dealing with some kind of itching allergic issue and so we are still spending some hours in a cone. I put the cone on him before I went out and when I got home he looked like this. CLEARLY NOT IN A CONE. Still don’t know how he did it. This was a few days ago; he has not repeated this Houdini move.

My cat is rather confused that we refuse to leave the house, sit for hours in different rooms making clacking sounds, and do not provide a lap for scritching and cuddles. Hey, that's my footstool!

The only plants I can manage to care for: our succulents Kit and Carson.
The name came about because I was reading Cather's 'Death comes for the Archbishop', now one of my favorite books. The conversation with my partner went something like this:
Her: What are you reading?
Me: Death comes for the Archbishop! Beautiful novel! I love it!
Her: Yeah I liked it a lot too, but why did she have to introduce these dumb, fantastical elements?
Me: Huh, like what?
Her: Well, this town on a plateau where everyone uses ladders, for one. And then there's this ridiculous frontier character with the stupid name of Kit Carson.
Me: ummm...both of those are real things. Kit Carson is a real person.
Her: You will never convince me of that.

Here is the gorgeous view from a hill near the lake near where I live that I took when I went for a walk earlier today. Please do not hate me, I understand that I am extremely lucky. Also, having access to this view is a limited pleasure so I am trying to enjoy it as much as possible before I move to where my kid lives. (My kid made a mask for me that arrived yesterday, and I am so grateful to have it.) I picked some dandelion greens to add to my lunch. It was the second time I have had them. I prefer arugula but dandelion greens are nutritious, free, and growing wild so why the hell not? Thanks for this thread, Fizz.

It's a Squishable shark! I have two others--one of which was gifted to me by a MeFite some years ago (shown next to my other cat Peter, for scale) and one which is a fossil T. rex, currently sitting behind me in my office from where I grabbed it to show off to one of my evolutionary biology grad student rep colleagues who was sharing her non-fossil T. rex in lieu of live pets. (She also had several stuffed-birds-onna-stick, because in a meeting of biologists, someone's always going to have some pretty great things lying around their apartment.)
They are very good for hugging if you are an adult who wants something to squeeze. They also make surprisingly good throw pillows, and Arthur likes to stomp the shark into a comfortable position and sleep on it, too.

bet marie kondo is wishing she had more shit in her house right about now.
My house is full of shit. Not quite hoarding, but no "clean" spaces. I think it brings me some degree of comfort. Some of it could be used to wipe my ass in a pinch.

I put in my color-depositing conditioner to amp up the color on my 4-month-old dye job and even put in PRODUCT and I managed to get a selfie that I think makes me look pretty.

I still can't believe I took this shot
I went on a lighthouse boat tour a few years ago, on a drizzly day, and this came out better than I expected!

We've transitioned to online services for my UU church and I have to tell you, worship leading from home is a pretty sweet gig.

I've been trying to post pictures of our daily walks in the woods, just... because, you know? This one is my favorite so far.

I started an instagram for my dog Harvey - Instagram/harvey.the.mutt because, well, you know why. Too much time at home! But it’s fun. Here is a picture we put up today, it makes me smile. I also have an insta - /flissvert - and things go up pretty regularly.

We went for a walk this morning.
And last week, while it's not a photo, I had a close encounter with a mockingbird on the local community college campus. The empty parking lot's usually packed with automotive students' cars, and about 40 s in, mockingbirb lets us know what it usually hears [mp3].

So I was going through this random box and came across this stone.
I've known it was there for decades and always assumed it was just a rhinestone with a rust stain from some cheap long-forgotten setting. It is big - like 30 cts - and for the first time in like 30 years I picked it up and really looked into it and this weird stone that I've neglected all of the sudden just BLAZED with depth and color. I still don't know what it is, but it was a really nice surprise and delight!

I showed our tween Johnny Wallflower's 2 cupcake recipe and she wanted to make it because she likes all things cute, and 2 cupcakes are perfect! When I went into the kitchen she had everything in the giant stand mixer, lots of messy measuring cups and spoons on the counte, and was like, The mixer ISN'T WORKING because the batter is just sitting on the bottom and the mixer isnt mixing and it's spinning around on top of it! Of course there's only like a half a cup of batter at the bottom since it's only for 2 cupcakes. I guess I took it for granted that she would use a little bowl and make only a little dirty dish but that was not the case at all and thus purpose was defeated and I had big mess to clean for 2 little cupcakes. Yes they were perfect.
