1) Victioria Bug Zoo is worth a post. You can go in and hold various Arthropods in your hands. There's a cute hand-sized scorpion that you can fondle if you wish (back when I was there).

2) 'Dr Phibes Rises Again' (1972) Vincent Price hilarious horror film with many scorps represent.

I don’t trust scorpions because it is just not clear at all what’s going on with their faces. What does a scorpion face even look like? You don’t know—nobody knows. It’s just a bunch of dire ill-defined little parts that can definitely probably hurt you in unimaginable ways and which any sensible person just doesn’t want anything to do with.

I'm sorry but I'm not on board with this whole scorpion thing because you see I live in Tucson, in a house that I love very much except for the one problem it has, which I'd imagine you've guessed by now is scorpions; excellent guess, that, very perspicacious, but it's not fun to have little housemates that can stab you with really really painful poison at any moment, and now that my cat isn't around to chase them down and alert me to their presence I have to rely on checking the house regularly with a UV light, but that didn't stop one from nailing me in the foot as I walked into my closet at five am one summer morning last year, so I was kind of paranoid about them for a while, but then it got to be winter and I figured I was okay, I relaxed a little, but then there were problems with the water in my neighborhood the other day and I went to check the meter and when I pulled the cover off the little cave they keep the water meter in a smallish brown scorpion, looking nonplussed, darted into a crack in the concrete so now it's already scorpion season and it isn't even March yet and now they're all over Metafilter too.

In conclusion, this is a subject about which I have feelings.

Folks, it's simple math. Two legs are fine. Four legs are usually pretty good, with the potential to inspire awws and related adorableness. Past four, we're entering a world of levels of eww, while accepting that there do exist some insects that are kind of okay. But once you cross the hated eight leg barrier, there is nothing good on the other side. Only gross terrible things that hate and are evil. Past the land of terror (eight legs) you're just talking about straight up Cthulu mythos nightmare fuel.

I would much prefer MetaPotamus Day. Or HippoFilter, but I thought that was a bit obvious.

So for roaches there are these black plastic things that you scatter 'round your home and inside two weeks -- no more roaches. Which is great. And they just go off on their own and die so you need not even clean them up. Is there nothing like this for scorpions? I'd think it'd sell FAST, that for the first couple of years they'd have trouble keeping them on the shelves.

So does anyone here know if there is some sort of preventative and/or prophylactic solution to the scorpion problem?

Serious question.

dancestoblue, I asked this question about spiders a while back, and I was told that, essentially, there is no poison that works on spiders. I don’t know if it was one of those “the thing you want does not exist” or if it was “the thing you want exists, but is utterly toxic to all things and you would also die.”

Either way, no. Can’t be poisoned. Sure. That’s a sign of something that’s totally not from the darkest regions of the outer night. Definitely adorbs.

I added Zelda Day to the Yearly Traditions page, and created a new Unintentional theme day page, pulling non-recurring evens* from this Google Calendar of MetaFilter Special Days.

* Dec. 26, Zelda Day, is a special day, having started as an accidental theme, but being carried on every year by JHarris. And I added the "alternate" Zelda Day, for good measure.

And in documenting these unintentional theme days, I'll note that January 24 was Pseudo Scorpion Day, not True Scorpion Day. No time traveling necessary ;)
