Look, there's just not a lot of Jacquilynnes out there. As far as I have been able to tell from ego-googling, there's me, the professor at UIUC and some chick in Sault Ste Marie who passes a lot of bad cheques.

I'm sure a lot of people would be expecting a butt-themed thing from me - so I'm going to shake things up and maybe do a post pertaining to the other part of my name.

I would love to post about where my name came from, but the post would be mostly links to wikipedia and rottentomatoes, which doesn't feel like a great post.

My userid is explained on my profile page.
It's a cat word!

I've mostly switched over to using "ossiangrr" everywhere in the last couple of years, though, which has a much more fun origin.

Huh, so, the death of the Jacquilynne in Sault Ste Marie from complications related to fentanyl addiction inspired her mother to become an advocate for decriminalization and addiction services in Canada. It seems like there might actually be a fairly interesting post there, I'll try to dig into it a bit.

I use my name as my name, so...I don't have a whole lot.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Back in elementary school, another student gave me a card that had big bee on it with caption to the effect of QUEEN BEE. Many years later, I kept bees. I feel like there's got to be a connection there. In any case, here is an interesting bit of bee behavior for you all.

Most, but not all, of the honeybees born in a hive are female. There is almost always one queen, without which the colony basically dies off over time. If a queen dies, the workers can create several queen-candidates by feeding royal jelly to some existing larvae. The first one of these to hatch kills off the others. If more than one hatch at a time, they fight to the death. The remaining female flies out to mate. Where does she go to do this? This is Part One of the mystery.

Now - a small percentage of the bees in a hive, the drones, are male. They don't do a whole hell of a lot except eat and take up space. They do serve a purpose, though, and that is to mate with so-called virgin queens. So they leave the hive and head to what are called Drone Congregation Areas. No one really knows how these areas are defined or established. But they are, and the males head there. This is Part Two of the mystery.

The females head there, too. But here's the bit: no one knows how they manage to converge on the same place. Consider the sizes of the honeybees and the range they can travel (foragers can travel 1-3 miles one-way). Nevertheless, both the males and females manage to return to the same spots for mating. Drones don't last the winter, so it's not as though they can pass along the DCA location to others. Pheromones probably play a role. Some scientists think that there's some visual cue which attracts them, but they're not sure what. It's frankly a mystery.

I was beaten to it.

There have been no further developments in the story except a) Ask a Mortician's overview of the story with an explicit feminist read, as well as My Favorite Murder's, and b) the fact that I have since visited Key West.

I walked past the fence of the cemetery, a dense and beautiful place, on my way to somewhere else. I had thought I would pay a visit and try to find the old mausoleum lot, but I was uneasy. I wanted to be respectful. Key West is such a small town, so much like the one I grew up in, and without particularly meaning to, I saw the store where Carl von Cosel bought all the perfume and soap that he needed, and the roads he took her along. (And, of course, I bought a book about the story in a store just off Duval Street.)

Longest line of tacos and biggest flour taco; but my username is an ongoing project which would have to self link, so nope. My current tacos are: using up the rest of the recent 19# porchetta to make crispy pork belly & swiss chard fried tacos; green curry fried pork tacos with the rib bits, and this butternut squash roti recipe from Ainsley Eats the Streets, as we definitely allow taco-adjacent, nearly-burrito-whatever deliciousness, we do not limit to tacos.

Can we talk about the usernames of others? I was once reading a thread here and noticed a really interesting and memorable username, "Anticipation of a new lover's arrival". Then last week I started reading a book my one of my new favourite authors, Iain M Banks, and what should be one of the the character names but "Anticipation of a new lover's arrival". I had a good giggle to myself and was feeling very "cultured" indeed.

Now, how do I tag another user in here?

My username is a play on my married last name (that is my husband's grandfather, which I may have mentioned in passing about 50 times before now). The first part of my username is actually my middle name. I thought it sounded cooler than my real first name, which is Jennifer. I was one of the multitudes of the great Jennifer naming in the 1960's (that article says 1970's, but there were at least 3 other Jennifers in my 8th grade class, so). It's also handy because my crappy ex and other people can't exactly look me up under this name. Not that I'd care at this point, it's been too many years for me to worry about some long gone jerk.

Unfortunately, I also use this first name on FB, so now everyone and their brother thinks my first name is Marie, tho' I do tell people when meeting in person. Usually after my husband calls me "Jen" and then the cat is out of the old bag, as they say. I guess you could say I was reinventing myself after a difficult period in my life, and I wanted to start anew. Technically Marie is part of my legal name, I just happen to go by my middle name online. The cats don't care what I call myself, as long as I keep opening the cans with gravy food on demand.
