Trivial Donation July 23, 2019 11:56 PM Subscribe
Metafilter’s quasi-official Seattle Trivia team Manifest Destiny’s Child has, in a follow-up to last week’s 20th anniversary triumph, won again this week.
As we (this week: Errant and party (if you’d sign up, you could get an actual name), clew, cgc373, Slarty Bartfast and yr obt svt) did last week, we are donating our winnings to the site (a bit less impressive at $32 but that’s what we got).
We’d like to encourage any other MeFi groups that might come into similar riches to think of the goodness that is Metafilter and help sustain this forum.
Your local trivia contests pay winnings in cash? I Moved Here For Work only ever wins beer, beer glasses and gift cards.

I love it! Uh... I don’t usually win at the trivia I’ve been going to. And the prize is a gift card. But! I love the idea!

Hurray! Also I really need to get to one of those, though you should prepare for the winnings to take a nosedive if so.

The one and only time I played bar trivia, my team won a Ouija board. I, um, don't think Metafilter would benefit from that donation. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I also don't have it, as I refused to touch it on the "don't believe but just in case" principle.

"I Moved Here For Work" would be a great name for a Bay Area team. I wish I was good at trivia.

Being good at trivia is largely extraneous to the pub quiz experience. It is much like bowling and pool and other games you can play while drinking in that regard.

Manifest Destiny’s Child
*applauds*
This got me thinking that "The Bill Monroe Doctrine" would be a great name for quiz nights in country bars.

I think skyscraper is underselling this momentous news a bit. When we all manage to show up, we never* lose. What this means is, over the course of a month, literally dozens of dollars will flow from the pockets of over confident drunks into Metafilter’s coffers thanks to the Seattle Trivia Squad. Financial security restored!
*we sometimes lose. This is a pretty rough quiz night. We are still in need of a British ringer. I am looking at you, Artw.

In these troubling times, it is critical that each Mefite beer as hard as they are personally able. Root beer counts.

Considering transaction costs - does one $60 donation net Metafilter more money than twelve $5 donations?

Checked with cortex on that, jointhedance, and he says larger contributions net us more, by a small amount: every transaction has a fixed $0.30 or so fee plus 3%, so, for example, 12 monthly payments is $3.60 in fixed fees vs $0.30 in fixed frees for one yearly payment ... and this structure is basically the same for Stripe and other transaction services.
