I have defeated the shark game March 10, 2019 6:03 PM Subscribe
Many moons ago, the shark game was posted on the Blue. (Also, 2, 3) I had never played a clicker game before, but I played. And I played a lot and then I left it for a few months. And then I got pregnant. Being pregnant takes forever and involves a lot of waiting, so somehow early in the pregnancy I stumbled upon the idea of a pregnancy project in which I would get "lots" of everything and have everything going up by "lots per second" by the time baby game. Baby is 22 months old and I have succeeded. Thanks for nearly two years of purpose-to-my-life, Metafilter and boo_radley.
I honestly don't know what to do with myself now.

Congratulations! I am happy that you met your goal!
That game ate my brain and I eventually had to block it with my adblock filter to keep myself from spending every free minute on it. I think I found it due to your first askme question about it. So thanks!
I have since graduated to a chicken game which scratches a similar itch, plus there are co-op challenges where you can play with other Mefites. Join us!

I clicked on the link and it still remembered the game I started back when this was first posted! Built up quite the stockpile in the last 3Y, 9M, 2W, 1D, 4:34:50.

"I resent this a lot because I missed this shark game the first time and boy howdy do these things always catch me when I see them. I have more important things to be doing right now," he says as he favorite the thread to check out all the links.

You're welcome and I have a lot of other suggestions for weird/ dumb idle games. I keep them to myself because I realize that a lot of people have issues with them for reasons of compulsion...

I'm still playing Egg Inc, I don't even know why.
I have been striving to get to the point where I could actually afford all of the regular research before my hen houses filled up and I could no longer earn money using the running chicken bonus / 24 hour time warp trick. I have had all the trophies and everything else for quite awhile, just couldn't quite buy that last research before I ran out of room to earn money at any kind of rate that would get me there without waiting literal months.
With the 3X prestige bonus they were running this week, I managed to get my prestige/golden egg levels up to the point where that was possible (so much tapping!) so I feel like I might actually be done with Egg, Inc. There's no point in running further contracts now that I've achieved all the things it is possible to achieve in the game itself.
That said, I'm about 3 weeks into Adventure Communist now, and it takes up a surprising amount of time.

I'm currently playing Space Engineers, which is a Minecraft-but-in-space game with no narrative or fixed goals, and so I'm just sort of exploring what sort of things can be built.
There's a tech tree that offers a bit of self-imposed structure: what haven't I built/unlocked yet, and what do I need to do that? And that sort of thing can really hook me; I've spent bits of gaming time the last couple days searching the asteroids in orbit around a Mars-like planet for a lode of gold so that I can mine it and take the ore back to my floating space base and refine it into bars which I can use to build semiconductors so I can build a jump drive and visit other planets.
It needs a lot of semiconductors. A lot of semiconductors. So now that I managed to find several hundred metric tons of gold ore, I'm "playing" the game in the other room and letting my refinery process the ore and my assembler build the semiconductors. This is probably going to take an hour or so, during which I could in principle be doing other stuff in the game but I don't actually need to or want to right now.
And the thing is I can look at the sort of idle pointlessness (or pointless idleness?) of things I've sunk time into like Cookie Clicker or the shark game and be like "boy that was kind of an empty game mechanic there, huh?" but then you take one of my Serious Games and I'm literally running my computer to let it fake-refine fictional metal for an hour and hrm! These distinctions, they are fragile and invented.

The result of stripping back a dopamine-hit delivery system to its barest essentials in any genre can be quite pleasing.

I wish it didn't count migrated allies for the event display. I picked up a whale migrator which is very helpful for the early game on each world but means I don't get to see the art for the different worlds anymore, which makes the whole thing a lot less fun.
