I think of a "holiday card" as any card sent during the winter season. (I am from the northern hemisphere.)

Personally, I welcome any type of card—specific holiday cards(even if it’s not a holiday I celebrate!)or more general good wishes. What I love is getting “real mail” from my fellow MeFites!

Is it okay if I do this on behalf of a 3.5-year-old? She loves getting mail, esp. cards.

I'd like to send your 3.5 year old child a card, Ertigan! Memail me her name and address.
I've signed up for the holiday card exchange.
Personally, I'm in favor of kind, well-meaning, appropriately seasonal cards when in doubt. IRL, I might send a religious greeting to someone who I know is religious but if in doubt I err on the side of kind, well meaning and appropriately seasonal greetings. I'm excited by living in a religiously and secularly diverse society, and I'm interested in what others believe and how they celebrate, so I'd welcome anything y'all send me.
Would it be appropriate for someone who would be offended by a certain type of card to indicate that on the sign up sheet? Or is that too snowflakey or rude? Or would it be too burdensome for needlgrrl?

Etrigan, I would love to send a 3 yr old some mail! My only niece *sigh* does not appreciate her auntie’s love of paper and written correspondence. I’ve also heard she barely touches the books I give her so the heartbreak is doubled.

Just signed up.
Samworm: I'd wager that the kind of person who would be that scandalized at the lack of Christian imagery in a holiday card is probably not the kind of person who'd be on MetaFilter anyway. But for the record, for anyone in my group:
I hereby promise that I have no quantitative scale by which I will be measuring the religious elements of any card I receive, nor will I publicly nor privately chastise anyone about the card they send me - firstly because I have a relaxed attitude towards religion anyway, but secondly - and more importantly - because I'm not a major galumphing dickfart.

I'm cool with any kind of card- last year I got a wide range, some jokey, some religious, some marking various holidays, some not. It's really fun to see what people send! The one thing all cards had in common is that they wished me well. So, if you think you could be offended or made uncomfortable by best wishes that are being conveyed through the filter of a particular holiday or religion, the Mefi Holiday Card Exchange might not be for you. (And that's fine!) The Mefi Card Club, where you can specify specific events or days, might be more to your liking.

I'll happily take cards for any holiday or celebration that falls in any time of the year in any part of the world, religious, secular, or independent. I get fewer and fewer cards each year from friendsnfamily -- it isn't personal, they claim -- and so I'm counting on MeFi to make my mantel look festive in December and January.

I'd love to send a card to a three-year-old, but if I get that address, the age of the recipient will be indicated, right? I think it might be weird to send some strange-o vaguely ironic thing (my preferred style) to a child. Like, what if my cards have a reindeer holding a martini glass or something? For a child, I'd rather get something different.

Etrigan - I think sending cards to your 3.5yo would be fun! But yes, if you will make a note, so that I can include that when I send out the email.
Samworm, I definitely think "anything kind, well meaning and broadly seasonal" is perfectly acceptable. I may even steal that for the description next year!
theappleonatree - I have a place for both your metafilter name and the name you would like mail sent to on the signup sheet, so you can use whatever name you prefer! I have had one request from someone to only be matched with people using names and not only handles, which is also fine.

So, this is quite an annoying thing to add, and I fear I may be piggy backing (literally, as you'll see) but seems to be the best place - every year I do a card based on the Chinese zodiac sign for the upcoming year (my wife is Japanese, and it's a lot more fun than trying to find something in the traditional subject matter). The printer I use does quantities of 100, then 250 - we need more than 100 but a lot less than 250, so every year there are lots left over, which makes me a bit sad, and every year I've thought of asking Metafilterians if they want one. And this thread ought to be the right place for it.
Thing is, though, the postage for the ones I already send is enormous (much more than the cost of the cards), and I'm in the UK, so sending a card to the US would cost £1.25 each time. Just typing this makes me feel Scroogian, so I ought to sign up, and probably will, but would it be bad of me to offer to send a card beyond that to anyone who would cover the postage?

I filled out the form, but actually put a request for folk to send my grandmother some Christmas cards.
I understand this is not actually the main use case for the metafilter card swap, but she is 93 and really loves getting cards (especially from interesting people and places around the world). This would be such a nice christmas surprise for her.

They could be, but they're a bit idiosyncratic, and I must confess I'd not thought anyone else would want one. I was just about to offer to Just this guy y'know to send his gran a card anyway, however the lists work out, as long as she'd be cool about getting a card with a cartoon boar on it. There is an explanation on the back, though.
I could offer them for sale at the postage price alone, though, for the buyer to receive rather than send - is that what you meant?
(I've signed up, by the way.)
They're off being printed at the moment.
(2020 is the year of the rat, too. 2021 year of the ox, so that'll be a lot less fraught with potential wtf.)
This is the 2018 card, for Year of the Dog, in a silver frame presiding over the dinner table. The 2019 card looks nothing like that, though.

Quick question: Is the expectation that some amount of MeFi-stalking will occur to personalize the messages, or is that creepy in this context / the cards should be generic?

I don’t think there are really any rules—other than simply sending some sort of card to each name that you receive, and to thoroughly enjoy the cards you get! Stalk away if you wish, but it’s not required!

Just an update - I have sent out all the US Only groups, and will send out the international groups tomorrow, like in the evening! Sorry for the delay - things took longer around here this weekend than anticipated. I have everyone sorted, just need to prep and send emails.
If you requested more than 10 cards (and were willing to send anywhere) you may receive more than one email from me, so if you don't have the number of names/addresses you were expecting, they should come tomorrow.
If you notice anything else amiss with the emails, let me know! I'm always looking for ways to improve my process.

I got a grandmother! Should I write some context on the card, or does it not matter? I don't know how to explain us to strangers...
Also, because my post office was terrible and then was torn down so I have nowhere to ask: if I'm mailing a standard sized letter from the US to foreign parts, will it work if I use two letter forever stamps and a postcard forever stamp?

Forever letter stamps are worth whatever a standard 1 oz letter costs to mail within the US as of the day you mail it, regardless of when you bought it or for how much. As of now, that's $0.50. Ditto for forever postcard stamps, which are currently worth $0.35.
So for a foreign 1 oz letter, use one forever-letter and two forever-postcard stamps.

I owe 7 mefites an apology, but I don't have their usernames.
I got 12 / 19 cards sent. I was going to (and did!) finish the rest at the airport. Only to discover that the first airport didn't have any mailboxes inside security. Neither did the second. I've *never* had a problem mailing stuff from an airport, but I guess I've never tried to do it in the US -- I usually just want to make sure postcards get the foreign postmark!
OK, fine. I'll buy postcards and mail them from abroad! That's probably *better*!! Well, it would've worked, until in my sleep-deprived-from-travel state I left the bag of postcards in the taxi.
And now, I'm stuck on a boat, and will be until the 20th... at which point the last 7 will be mailed.

I still have a few to send out which I hope to put in the mail tomorrow. Some I sent to Santa, ID, for remailing, so those won't be mailed out until next week. (I assume? this is my first year doing that.)
Honestly, if I get a few cards into January, I'll still be quite pleased with them!

Non-US cards (and some US cards I could complete before work decided to start sucking again) went out today; remainder should be out Monday (Etrigan said hubristically).

I've rec'd my first card earlier this week and I've mailed everything that has to go out of the country as of yesterday. Just a couple more cards to drop in the mail and that's it! Hopefully, Canada Post gets the mail going a bit better so everything gets delivered prior to Christmas. *Fingers crossed.*

I've been a little afraid to check in on this thread because I am only able to send my cards out today, but I like rhizome's way of looking at it: isn't it more fun to get a surprise over a period of time?

Oh, I should mention that all my cards are in the post as of last Friday, and will hopefully be arriving at some point. If not, do give me a shout.

Two unicycles and some duct tape, I actually put up a string of LED photo clips across a wall (we're still unpacking and putting things up, so I have a blank wall!) and am putting my cards on that, which is making me super happy.

I have already gotten a couple of delightful cards from MeFites! Mine are all sent and hopefully are arriving safely in inboxes.

I have received such great cards!!!! One had a Santa, Idaho postmark! One is a Christmas tree with button ornaments! Another is a hand drawn Informer joke! There are Metafilter snowflakes for my tree! There is a fruitcake card, and a holiday poodle, and a glittery dove, and a holographic strawberry, and a gorgeous sledding scene that is apparently a print of an original the artist painted by mouth!
Y'all are fantastic season's greeters - I am so impressed.

Oh, thank goodness! My partner had me half-convinced that no one would get a joke about the foremost pre-Drake Canadian rapper.

I know metafilter is an extraordinarily tolerant and inclusive place but the only time I've done a card exchange previously I was publicly chastised for a lack of Christian imagery/wording. I'd be delighted to receive cards like that, but wouldn't send them. I assume anything kind, well meaning and broadly seasonal would be acceptable?
(and thank you for making the arrangements)
