Help test flagging with a free-form text field June 30, 2018 11:34 AM Subscribe
Hey! Help us test out a new feature: a flagging option to leave a short note in a free-form text field instead of choosing one of the pre-defined flagging reasons. We'd like to make sure the core functionality is working well in this thread before rolling it out on the site for actual use, so come on in and kick the tires a bit!
The idea is simple: if you're flagging something and you think the reason's not totally obvious or self-explanatory, you can instead of choosing a fixed label just select the "flag with note..." option and type up a short explanation that will be visible to mods looking at the flag queue.
Note: this isn't intended to replace the contact form (about which we're revisiting some other stuff, and that's outside the scope of this thread). For anything but very brief explanations, writing us a note at the contact form is a better plan. Likewise, if you need a response from us, use the contact form; the flagging process is a one-way notification for the mod team, not something we can respond to directly.
We tested a couple iterations of this back in 2016, in this and then this MetaTalk thread. We've since drawn down the idea to its minimal state: no changes to flag glyph or other behaviors other than kicking open a text entry widget on the page if you choose the new option.
The goal with this test is two-fold:
1. Identify any showstopper issues, where the new functionality actually breaks the flagging process or otherwise does disruptive things to the thread/browser/etc. We want to make sure we aren't breaking the site for folks before we roll this out.
2. Identify bits that could use tweaking or polishing or etc. Non-showstopper issues we may just go ahead and address over time after rolling the feature out, so as not to further delay something we've already pushed back for a long time.
So, yes! Flag away, give us feedback on bugs and flow stuff. For browser behavior stuff, mentioning your browser, OS, device, and MeFi theme (Modern or Classic) will help us pin down issues that are broad vs. esoteric.
Reminder, this test is only active in this thread; feel free to go nuts with flags in here but don't expect any new flagging functionality elsewhere on MetaTalk or the rest of the site for now.

Yes. The way it shows for us within a thread -- both for regular flags and for these new freetext flags -- is first as just the indication [flagged x times] as a link under the comment, as seen in a screenshot here:

..... and then if you click on that link, a little window appears that shows who flagged, at what time, what flag reason, and now, their note text. Like so (in which I'm the one who flagged):

I also see the [!] shrinking, in Chrome on Ubuntu. And the contrast between the size of the pull-down menu and the text entry field really emphasizes how tiny the pull-down menu is. Otherwise it works great!

When I got to the bottom of sciatrix's recent Meta, the little dark rectangle said '0 new comments, show'.
I hit show anyway, and got three new comments, starting with cortex's 'string of stuff removed', and then a '3 new comments' box immediately appeared, and when I clicked that I got the same three comments again.
So I ended up with a thread which had a little 3 comment loop.
If this system had been in place could I have left two different notes on each of the three repeated comments? And would that have caused a problem?
Because I would have been tempted, let me tell you.

Yes to Classic. On closer examination, I'm not sure that the font size is actually changing for me, but the positioning of the ! is shifting slightly. Cancelling out of a flag, regular or with a note, drops the ! down a few pixels. Inspecting the link and the surrounding span shows them with the same font size and line height as un-cancelled flag links, so I'm not sure what's happening. This may be a longstanding behaviour of the flagging system in Classic theme rather than something added by the new feature, but so subtle that nobody's ever noticed.
Screenshot, with top comment showing the symptoms. It's pretty subtle.

Can we discuss shrinking the list of flags? Maybe it's more of an issue on smaller mobile device screens, but the list is just a bit too long to fit in my screen (screenshot from Google Pixel v1, Chrome browser vSomething). I can click on the bottom option without scrolling, but the fact I can scroll irks me.
But to clarify, this is a super minor formatting issue, though I still think the list is too long.

Revisiting flag list content is definitely something we can look at more easily after this free-form thing is in place, yeah. We've talked through a few ideas for that before and I think if nothing else trimming it a bit would be doable.

Looks like everything but Latin characters with a limited set of diacritics fails (Windows 7, Firefox 56.0b10 64 bit until a good Tab Groups replacement materializes, Classic Theme). Unlike Memo's Zalgo text, I get no visible error with (checks, thanks Google Translate) Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Thai, Gujarati, Telugu, Georgian, Singhalese, and Vietnamese characters, but the "flagged" marker disappears upon reload. (German was fine, though, so umlauts and the odd eszett here or there are not a problem?) Probably a comparatively minor issue, but if someone who switches keyboard languages accidentally inputs a character in the wrong one, their flag will disappear.

I like "Other..." because the ellipsis in menu items is a long-standing convention in user interfaces that an additional interface with more options will be presented, so I think it's fairly discoverable. But so many of the old rules of user interfaces have been broken in the last decade or so, maybe this isn't as standard a part of the grammar of user interfaces as it used to be. Probably have to check with some of the Kids These Days to know if it's still obvious.

This is not to say that there is no possible improvement there, so much as to say, y'know, we're gonna run with "Flag with note..." for now so we don't go insane trying to polish it any more in the short run. We can always massage it later.

Has it always been the case that you can't remove a flag?
It seems you can't see your own note, much less edit it. People's second thoughts are often more focused and nicer than their first thoughts.
Also, I thought this was broken at first, because it's not obvious that you select "flag with note" and then click it. And it looks like the non-note options have to be clicked again too?
You could solve both problems by letting the selection take place immediately, but allowing 60 seconds to unflag/reword.

Possibly worth noting is that if you click to flag, select freeform, and then don't put in text, you can't click to flag anything else until you've either saved or cancelled the first interaction. I can see where this could be confusing or frustrating, especially since previous behavior was that you can click flag, not select a reason, and then click flag on a different problem, no problem. (Which is sort of what I expected this to do when I tested it--I assumed that clicking to flag a different comment would cancel the first.)

I'm not seeing anything double flagged by you, shapes that haunt the dusk, so either you were mistaken about doubling up (not a problem!) or you were able to flag something twice, but it only showed up on our end once (we'd want to fix that).
If anyone finds that they can flag twice, do let us know!
For general info, once you've flagged something with any flag option, instead of seeing the "!" you should now see "[Flagged]," whether in the thread or viewing recent activity.

So it could have just been a weird caching(?) thing on my end, or something.

I should add that if one has RA already open another tab, I wouldn't expect that a comment there would automatically update to "Flagged" without a refresh or reload.

Okay, and trying this specifically, I see that with RA already open, once I've flagged something and then go to flag the same comment in RA (where I'm still seeing the "!" because I haven't reloaded), I CAN seemingly flag again, but in fact it does not show up in mod flag queue. I'll let frimble know.

I flagged a few comments as "other" trying to launch the freeform field. Then I realised that I needed to scroll down, same as above.
However, I wouldn't recommend losing the 'other' option. Drive by "oh, I don't know but LOOK" is useful, I guess.
Pick a reason to flag takes up one slot on the menu but I figure you still need it there.
I'm on Android, fairly small screen (S5 mini)

I flagged shapes that haunt the dusk’s comment just above mine with 🏳️ and it apparently worked—I see [Flagged] by that comment now.

Fwiw the dropdown list works fine for me on iOS despite its length. Like all dropdowns, it brings up a separate panel where the keyboard would go, instead of trying to fit it onto the screen (random example image).

tags are turned into text (like so: <sometag>the text</sometag>). urls are turned into links, unless they have tags, in which case we see something like <a href="https://metatalk.metafilter.com/24838/Help-test-flagging-with-a-free-form-text-field">Link</a>.

The "cancel" button for the note modal doesn't respond to Escape key in Mac OS 10.13.5.
Esc doesn't cancel in
- FireFox 60.0.2
- Brave 0.23.19 rev 178c3fb
- Safari 11.1.1 (13605.2.8)
- Chrome 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Another keyboard issue
After I click the bang, the menu is highlighted/selected showing "pick a reason to flag"
If I type F, D, H, N, O, or I, the first item beginning with that letter* is selected and submitted.
* yes, those letters aren't unique, and if you're rewording them anyway please make them unique.

Please increase the target size for the I want to flag button. It's hard to hit with a mouse/trackpad; it's impossible for me to hit on my phone. To flag on mobile I have to double the screen size: do you want that friction?
I suggest creating a glyph like the fabulous STAFF badge. It would say
[FLAG]
and be much less mysterious than the +/! combo now. Perhaps people don't flag because they don't know what the [!] means?

I would be glad to see this as an option (text field for flagging). I recently flagged a couple of posts because I didn't feel the comments were helpful - someone trying to point out that another's opinion was wrong. I would have liked to give my reasons for flagging but "offensive" didn't feel right in that situation.
I rarely flag posts but when I do, it's usually when someone tries to belittle a poster's comment.

How many characters? Could we maybe get a hard stop at the limit rather than just having the flag explanation silently truncated?

I think right now it's about 2500 characters, which is frankly way way too much but allows us to account for outlier long stuff. When we roll this out we'll emphasize the focus on short notes; almost nothing in this field should get to even 10% of that, basically.

I know this doesn't matter, but I can't stop myself: The "!" flag icons are still shrinking for me if I cancel out of flagging a comment. Before clicking, the A tag has class="flag". After canceling out, it has class="flag icon-flag", and the icon-flag class sets a smaller font-size. I'm using the Modern Dark theme.
