I like your favourites May 9, 2018 7:37 AM   Subscribe

I unfortunately am aware of the academic research around "likes" and the equivalent. But, metafilter favourites carry more weight with me, even than family likes on facebook, because you guys (apart from H00py, and the tenth anniversary 3 monkeys people) don't know me or owe me. So when you favourite something I post here, which is much much more than .

I tell the world in general, whether it's about mental health or feminism or being on the spectrum, or cat furniture (puttting paper on an otherwise empty floor so cats will feel driven to sit on it -way way before the internet viral tape your cat into a circle), I feel accepted as me. I look to see who gave me their favourite, I look at their recent posts and comments and almost always I say, well, gee, X is actually rather supercool and they got something out of my ramblings. And if a supercool person can like what I say, maybe I'm saying good stuff and should keep saying it, and so I do. I say more in this world than I do in my 3d world. (Autism, anxietym depression blah yada blah). You guys give me a voice. If I tell the real world important things, it's often because I said it here first, not censoring or editing myself.

And now shout out to the mods and mathowie for making this the kind of space it is. I moderated a much smaller place (about 150 people) last century and I learnt a fuck of a lot about being a decent human being by moderating, but I wish I had had the example of metafilter back then (though I'm still in touch with about 40 of those people, and some of the babies that happened are having their own.)

Mods, maybe too soppy. I'm having a better night than usual. Feel free not to post

I know the feeling. The other day I got a rare fave from jessamyn!

I also like getting favorites from people I know just because it's like a little hello and it lets me know they're hanging out on the site.

MetaFilter has also helped me find and accept myself, too. I've learned a lot about self acceptance and how to try to keep on bettering oneself.

Haha, this reminds me of when I first joined MetaFilter, which was around the time I first joined social media and I seemed to not understand how likes or favourites worked. This led to all kinds of hilarious vanity actions such as my favouriting all of my own posts or liking my own comments.

I'm pretty loose with my favourites because it's a way for me to just let someone know that I appreciate a thing they made or a thing they said. There are situations where I feel like I'm not in a place where I can comment, so I want to at the very least acknowledge that I appreciate their contributions to our community.

There are also those who just say it better than I ever would, so liking their comments is my way of expressing gratitude for their making the conversation more interesting.

Our time on this earth is too short and it goes by too quickly, so share your likes and favs.

So, true for me, too, mostly*

And Metafilter doesn't have tiny blue thumbs or golden handwaves. So, depending on what I've posted or said in a comment, it can mean a lot. And from who it came: a languagehat favorite can make my day.

*On the other hand, I make one cleverly formatted comment in a political daily thread for the first time and it is the second most favorited thing I said ?

Oh, sure, me shoots, me scores, on one hand, but is a driveby thwack of President Never-Read-a-Book Mr. Bottomless Well of Need Potato Head what what I want to be remembered for here ?

I think not.

(I only use favorites as bookmarks, so please, no one take it personally. I worry about that sort of thing, given how much emotion some others have invested in them--just for my own purposes and peace of mind, I prefer the bookmark function.)

I started using "recent activity" lately and clicking "add to activity" on threads and my level of enjoyment of the site has changed so much.

Tracking Favorites are validating and a fun way to see how comments that I have favorited are "doing", but moving over to "recent activity" has been a huge improvement for my interaction with the site in terms of my own feels and stuff.

I look at other people's favorites!

I like to go to a user's profile, click on "Favorited by others", and then sort by popularity. It's an easy way of seeing which posts and comments of theirs resonated with people the most.

Awww you guys. And H00py is awesome fun. We met here but we were living like less than a mile from each other and one of us said let's take public transport for 3 hours each way to go to the Ren Faire and the honey mead was much more alcoholic than I expected so we waited in the dark for the last bus out, and I was lying under a tree not feeling so good and she was just really cool about being in charge of zombie. But yeah, h00py is a really cool frood.

Although, I have, on occasion, clicked to see who favorited something I wrote, I more often try to favorite a comment on my tiny phone with my chubby fingers and end up seeing who favorited the comment instead. I rather expected that all you cool people were so rockstar and probably never checked who fav’d your stuff. Now I’m oddly self-conscious about faving. You stalkers.

I’ll get over it. I fav a lot, but honestly, not as much as I should because of the aforementioned mobile UI tiny-ness issue.

(Now tho I'm going to have to go check if I've ever been faved by loquacious or jessamin)

I do this as well, with the addition of favouriting comments that involved some kind of actual work/research on the part of the commenters in question, or any comment that gives me insight into a particular person's lived experience. I value first-hand accounts of events, and unique personal stories very much.

Holborne, that's not how I view this at all. People are expressing appreciation for each other and appreciation in general.

I'm not bragging about a favorite from jessamyn because I think she's cool or popular or because it earns me weird popularity brownie points - I'm honored by it and expressing appreciation for it because I know her time is super valuable and that it means I said something that resonated with her.

She is one person among many on this site who has long earned my respect for the things they do with their life, who they are IRL and here on MeFi. So a favorite from one of those people means something personally to me. It's not just some random "popular internet person" handing out a shinier imaginary internet point.

These favorites are cherished as moments of actual connection between people, not as social status symbols and imaginary internet points.

Then I started going through the posts and comments of the people on my infodumpster list and the scales fell from my eyes.

Not in the case of languagehat and madamjujujive, because I have known them all my life here, as is the case with the names dropped above, because they are so smart and their posts so interesting. I worship madamjujujive and that's all there is to it.

Uh, wow. So now we’re going to turn this into a popularity contest on two levels — who are the coolest people to be favorited by, and who’s the most favored by the cool people ? Really ? That’s how we want to be here ?

Oh, for Christ's sake, these are my homies, friends of long standing. You have a problem with that ? Really ? I am not going to back down on this one, no matter how hard anyone tries to make themself right by making me wrong.

No idea how you’re squaring this: With this:

It was a metajoke. You can't trade favorites around, and it was a nod to previous threads discussing the exact issue and feelings you've brought up. I also specifically picked those usernames because I like them and some of them aren't around much anymore.

Hey, I'm sorry if this has made you feel bad or weird. It's sincerely a bummer to me. It was definitely not my intent. I've been dealing with a ton of new emotions lately - many of them overwhelmingly positive - and I'm still learning how to express them without collateral damage like this.

I'm also learning I shouldn't necessarily let it dampen my enthusiasm or goodwill and that I can't make everyone happy all of the time.

I view favorites as my history of touching people with whatever unlikely gifts of writing and life experiences that I've had, whether it was earnest or funny or controversial. They're a tapestry woven from my life, not a horde of gold coins.

I use favorites as a metric for how good a contributor I am. I look at the proportion of total favorites I receive to the number of the number of contributions I post. In other words, am I just yapping or am I contributing something of significance to the community. It's nice to get one from a Person of Significance, but really I use it for QC and perhaps to limit my comments to places and times where I might have something worth saying.

One time, long ago, I spent an hour writing a carefully crafted masterpiece of internet commentating, a shining metafilter comment of glorious truth. It got lots of favorites, which I noticed and was pleased by. Some time later I made a dumb one-liner joke that roughly aligned with the zeitgeist early in a high-traffic thread. It got more favorites, and I was like, eh, whatever. I do not believe they are ever reliable as a quantitative metric for anything.

Today, I found out there are pages that show all my little contributions sorted by favorites, and produce a list of everyone who's recently favorited my stuffs. So of course I quickly gave in to temptation and looked at them. I may have just overdosed on community approval.

I really enjoyed this insight into how people use favorites until the "Oh my God so en so is the best Meta Filter contributer and their favs mean so much more to me than any other favs," started. It's not that I don't agree that people named aren't stand out members of the community, I just get saddened that threads like this so quickly become alienating to people who, for whatever reasons, aren't as well known/don't post as regularly on the site. It does quickly start to feel sort of high school-ish and yicky. I'm left uncertain whether I should shout out to a couple of my favorite people who I dont see recognized here. I don't think I will though because I don't want to contribute to what I see as a negative. I'll just say that there are some folks who I really appreciate on this site who didn't get recognized here in all the gushing. I'm not the type that wants to use this site to make friends IRL and I don't often private message anyone, so you may not ever hear from me, but if I've favorited you more than 3 or 4 times, I've noticed you and I appreciate you . We may not always agree on everything, but I respect that. You make this site the amazing place it is.

I've recently been undertaking a (very slow and intermittent) unfavoriting spree, as an effort to move away from favorites-as-approval and more towards favorites-as-bookmarks — um, for reasons I'm not sure I can adequately explain to myself, let alone anyone else — so if you've noticed your favorite count decreasing it was probably me, and it's not personal.

I'm still using favorites on FanFare posts, to express, especially on posts which get few comments, "hey, I watched/read/listened to this too and even if I don't have anything to say about it I'm glad you posted it because I'm interested in reading what other MeFites are saying about it."

It does quickly start to feel sort of high school-ish and yicky.

I can understand this.

With all the warmth and kindness I can offer, I wasn't one of the popular kids in high school - I will likely feel like an outsider and weirdo for all of my life. And I don't feel that elitism is what's going on here. I'm just praising some of the people I know and like.

I'm pretty sure jessamyn would be uncomfortable with being identified with the popular/cool kid in HS, too. I wasn't praising her because I think she's popular or well known, but because of what she does here on the site and elsewhere.

I'm left uncertain whether I should shout out to a couple of my favorite people who I dont see recognized here.

Which is why I think people should shout out and praise their favorite people. We're not running out of words on the internet or space to do so. I'm coming from the space that more appreciation is more appreciation, not that this is a popularity contest, and that we don't take the time to appreciate each other nearly enough.

I may not know those people, and I may wish to know them and appreciate them too.

I am of the opinion that very few of us were the popular kids, at least, in our own minds.

Else why are we here ?

But people like to project that persons other than our specific selves were members of the elite not us, who have it so easy, , and that to praise anyone specific is a sure sign of this.

But it is not. What it is a sure sign of is how little we value ourselves.
