Why is my comment getting favorited so much?! March 24, 2018 1:24 PM Subscribe
I swear this isn't a humblebrag. I'm perplexed.
I posted an AskMeFi question. The question itself has been favorited a perfectly normal number of times (5), and received a perfectly normal number of responses (6).
But then my update comment thanking y'all for helping me solve my problem has 29 favorites, idk what happened?? It's very gratifying, and my head's grown three sizes since I discovered this unexpected popularity, but the mystery is bugging me. Did someone link to it from somewhere, and if so, how can I find out where?

People like Askers who post updates.
People like Askers who take their advice.
People like Askers who get what they wanted.
People like swearing.

It was a funny comment, but more than that, a high note in what sounded like a pretty horrible situation. Maybe not quite a happy ending, but in that direction.

I think it's because people are susceptible at this season of the year to a certain success story genre. And yours was beautifully set up with a triumphant and highly satisfying ending.

Agree with all the posters saying it's funny and a good resolution, but I also favourite people's updates to...I don't know, thank them for having come back and updated, basically.

If I may ask a somewhat related question, is there a good explanation of how I can be getting favorites this week on a answer to an ask me that was deleted over a month ago?

Well if you were perplexed by the number of favorites you got before you said anything, prepare to be super-ultra-mega-perplexed.

Because you fucking DID THE THING. You didn't hem and haw for days. You rose up and made the call, and phone calls can be HARD. You achieved what you wanted -- no, what you DESERVED. I love those endings and you deserve all the favorites you get for that.

Btw, there are responsibilities with being the HOH. Like you need to bake cookies for all who enter the house. We bow. You bake.

With AskMe questions that I have no ability to answer but am interested in the outcome, I often "add to activity," and I will often favorite resolution-type comments from the OP, because it's nice to hear when things went well or to commiserate when they went poorly. So it makes sense to me that more people would favorite a resolution comment than would favorite or comment on the original post.
Plus, your question and comment were funny.

I just favorited your update because I live around adults who refer to the "f-bomb*", so I'm always glad to see adults talk like motherfucking adults.
*Or, as my kids say, the "fuck-bomb".

I am a person who favorited your update. It was meant as a sign of support for you in your situation (especially given that it sounded like you were succeeding) + love of the comment + thought it was badass in general. A++ would favorite again.

I favorited it because it made me laugh and cheer for you. It takes a lot of wherewithal to call something big and doomy like “the IRS”. So, hooray! That was all :)

Now, how does one cash in this massive number of favorites? Do I get a squeaky toy, or do I have enough for the large bunny?

Askers actually taking the advice are rare.
Askers posting updates are rare.
Askers who both take the advice and post an update are cause for celebration.

I didn't see the thread until now but if I had I probably would have favourited your answer because I love the sense of triumph it conveys over both the bureaucracy of the IRS and what I assume has not been a fun time in your personal life (plus I am always in favour of gratuitous swearing).
I rejoice in your newly assigned Head of Household status and hope you continue to take charge of your life, kick bureaucratic ass and be recognised as Head of your Household and any other title you might aspire to.

Someone else here who just favorited it (and bumped it into three figures, woo!), because sometimes the threshold for hitting that button is not that high. That's certainly true for a bunch of posts and comments that I've made; sometimes I'll put a lot of work into a post or comment and it's almost ignored, then I'll make a passing comment without really thinking about it and the updoots pour in. The race goes not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, &c.

Well, I'd say that's not true so much as it's a lot more memorable when someone conspicuously fails to take advice. Which is itself actually kinda rare but boy does it stick in folks' collective memory when it happens, especially in the case of a strong consensus.
