I always knew you were special

On my 10 year anniversary here at MetaFilter, I would just like to thank all of the MeFites that have welcomed me to this community and given me so much to think about. I'd especially like to thank the mods (past and present) for keeping the place sane and levelheaded, the Quonczars for the annual Quonsmas season fun, and especially mathowie who built this special home.

I read MetaFilter almost daily for your insights, projects, questions and news. There have been days where I wish I could just let you all know about something that has happened in my life, especially in the last year or so when my family has shrunken considerably. The politics threads are a lifeline. I genuinely appreciate the wisdom and I feel truly enriched. Due to spending time at MetaFilter, I am a more thoughtful person even though I still shower facing away from the water and I was basically raised by wolves. I am also more conscious of my writing style even though I'll never be as mellifluous as Wordshore.

tl;dr, thank you MetaFolx. You are indeed special to me.

Your post prompted me to check my own bio, and I realized I signed up just a day before you. So here's to the first decade! *raises pint*

Makes me think it's time again to give something back to support the site.
Hmmm... 10th anniversary is traditionally tin or aluminum ... I'l have to send that in before the US tariffs kick in.

Congratulations Kabanos!!! I wish I had known back then that this site would become such an integral part of my daily life. I would have chosen a different name (the 1 is silent).

One night a week or two ago, I had a dream that I came upon a building that looked to be an old library or school, and when I went inside, it was the "real" MetaFilter. There were tables everywhere where people could sit and chat, and lots of books, some of which were obviously left over from whatever else used to be there. I kept looking around for people I would recognize, as they were all wearing their usernames on name tags. Someone was showing me around and I kept asking them if perhaps we might bump into Jessamyn, but apparently she was not there that day. Then they took me around a corner and there was an office with glass walls, so you could see a desk and some chairs, even though it was dark inside. My guide explained that it was mathowie's office and had been left exactly the way it was when he turned over the site to cortex. It was such a thrill to see the "real" MetaFilter after being a part of the site for almost 18 years that I woke up with actual tears in my eyes.

Happy 10th MeFiVersary, Sophie1; this is a special place indeed.
