138: Don't Leave Me Hanging February 28, 2018 3:01 PM   Subscribe

It's a magical low-energy podcast! Okay, it's not especially magical. But it's me and Jessamyn and we talk about MeFi and shaking fists at kids and the Olympics and sundry other things. Recorded on Monday the 26th, it runs about 75 minutes.

Listening! Five minutes in and I feel I want to stop the podcast and bring in a large pot of very strong tea for Cortex, before it continues.

When two people make the same discovery independently at the same time it is called ... {drumroll} ... {wait for it} ...

Multiple discovery

How ... not that massively imaginative. The phrases simultaneous invention or independent invention are also sometimes used, apparently.

Getting mad at kids with a drone isn't a sign of being old, it's a sign that you value things like "not hearing a high-pitched lawnmower buzzing around everywhere."

It was just the first time I'd been wandering on a beach basically alone and then been like "What's that sound?" and was like "Awwww I hate the future" Usually I LOVE the future, or can at least tolerate it.

So, longest song. Guinness lists "In the Garden" but they measure by duration not word count. And I imagine epic poems like The Song of Roland outdo it by word count.

Fell asleep with 10 minutes left (currently am in an extremely well-heated room due to the tundra conditions outside so its drowsy-inducing). Just finished the podcast and enjoyed that one.

Drones have annoyed me on a few occasions of late; once when I'd walked to a scenic spot to have epic views to myself, only to find someone noisily flying one just round and round in circles. And another time, when someone was chasing birds with one "for fun", though he stopped when I enquired as to how scratch-resistant the paintwork, and how puncture-resistant the tyres, were on his car. Sadly, the cost of somewhat sinister looking jammers is currently way too much, but hopefully a small and cheap one will be marketed at some point to level up the balance.

(Someone also stupidly tried to fly one across the local outdoor gun range earlier this year, though he got most of it back in a cardboard box later on that day).

I first heard a drone when I was living next to a small production company in LA. One of their employees kept flying one outside our window, and refused to stop until we eventually talked to the management. Worst sound in the world. Nothing gets my goat like trying to go for a hike and hearing somebody fly their drone back and forth to get the right shot. It's like yeah, dude, you're not the only one who noticed that it was a pretty sunset.

Now, whenever I'm watching something and there's a beautiful drone shot, I just think of all the people who were undoubtedly super annoyed for half an hour.

Don't let drones get you distracted until after we deal with the scourge of leaf-blowers.

Let's add Sunday morning lawnmowers to that list as well.

Is "Black and White Rag" the music at the first break (around 15 minutes in)? Dang, that is awesome.

We were taking pictures near the Cape Code Canal the summer before last, and I saw someone launch one of those fancy, expensive white drones (DJI?) over the water. There's a strong, steady wind that blows in from the Bay, and their drone just worked its way farther and farther downwind, well out over the water. Eventually we could see that it was out of sight, past some power lines and buildings and stuff.

I know it has a "fly home" feature when the battery gets low, but... I sure hope they got that thing back.

It is! I try list the tracks in the MeFi Music section in the order they appear in the episode (though I've goofed now and then). Though my advice with that is always to just go listen to the full tracks!

I thought I read here every day, but I have only seen a couple of these discussions. Weird, let us also count in as annoying the pit bull next door to the east, who barks all Saturday morning, starting early, and then when he lets up yeah, the gardeners arrive with the leaf blowers, next door to the west. But I am going to figure out how to train the wild parrots to talk, in this town. So when they fly they shout out, "You dumb sons of bitches!," instead of imitating robins. My father passed away in 2007, so he no longer collects the royalties on that phrase.

I suggest you not watch the most recent episode of The X-Files (Season 11, Episode 7, linked to FanFare thread).

jessamyn there's actually a translation reason for using LORD vs Lord (you'll see both) and it has to do with how we get from different names for God in the Hebrew text - YHWH vs any other word that can get translated as "lord" - especially since the route to translation in English included referencing the Latin Vulgate translation, so lots of different words got translated as dominus in Latin which became "lord" in English. The translators understood YHWH was special with a particular history and context. So we get LORD and Lord.

the usual suspects

I'd like to think I'm Gabriel Byrne in this scenario, but I'm probably Benicio del Toro

Was riding home on the Metro tonight when I remembered the Sweeper vs vacuum chat. We've, that is my family, have always called it a sweeper even when it was a hose connected to a motor that created a vacuum to suck up the dirt.

The latest e-newsletter by Jessamyn is a fun read, partially due to this sentence:

"Please enjoy the part where the librarians noticed the guy was not a Vermonter because he was too well-dressed."
