The Great Metafilter Cookie Swap 2017: sign up today! November 18, 2017 3:38 PM   Subscribe

It’s been A Year, and we here at cookie swap central would like to bring baked joy to as many MeFites across the globe as possible. If you'd like to bring edible tidings of cheer to people’s lives this month, read on.

To sign up, please take a few minutes to fill out and submit the google form by Wednesday, November 29th. If you’re gluten-free, vegan, suffering from an almond allergy, etc., don’t worry—we’ll find you a swap group.

As in past years, I will arrange bakers into swap groups of ~4 and send out group assignments by December 1st. You will then be tasked with sending at least 6 cookies to each of your group's MetaBakers. While this means you are on the hook for a minimum of 18 cookies, you should likely bake extra for yourself, your loved ones, or your housemates, as they can get cranky when only strangers benefit from your baking. To maximize the chances that holiday travel won't ruin everything, the mailing deadline for this year's swap is Friday, December 8th. Let the baking begin!

Jaffa Cakes count as cookies, yes? Okay, Le French may have found the concept of the Jaffa Cake confusing, but one thinks they should be included. The Cookie Tent is a large and inclusive tent and it is 2017, after all.

I really like this idea but my oven is on the fritz.

I made bourbon balls for the swap last year-- no baking required (though a food processor helps). There's also No-Bakes, which need stove top cooking. I admit I didn't stop to contemplate whether or not they qualify as cookies, though.

DON'T START WITHOUT ME
posted by Soliloquy at 10:23 PM on November 18, 2017

Just signed up.

In the interest of planning - I signed in as someone without any allergies or preferences (well - except broccoli, but I don't think that will be pertinent), but the cookie I'm eyeing is technically gluten-free, in that it doesn't include flour. I'm going with a lot of German cookies this year, in honor of a trip I just took last month; who'da thunk it, there's a lot of nut-meal-and-egg-white cookies in there.

However, for my sins, my kitchen may not be 100% sterilized, especially on the day of baking (I'll be baking a LOT all in one fell swoop) so those with celiac disease, say, may be at risk. If there's a gluten-free-ish swap group I might be safe, though.

Three weeks ago I saw a cookies recipe and thought "That would be perfect!" and saved it for the cookies exchange.
Last week I bought the ingredients for those cookies, pleased with how nice it is to plan ahead.
This morning I signed up and the immediately started googling cookies recipes, finding several with completely different ingredients that would be perfect.

I'm going to make ALL THE COOKIES!

I have signed up again. I have no idea what I'll make yet, since I made my best idea last year for the first one, but no matter. That's what excuses for cruising my (growing) stack of recipe books is for!

Last year, I did one swap and yet somehow wound up making almost 3 dozen cookies. Apparently, it's a cardinal sin to make cookies for a swap and not share them amongst your significant other and his friends.

If my swap group ends up all local, or even if it doesn't, I will be happy to host an in-person cookie-swap and tea meetup for Portland and Portland-adjacent cookie swappers. It's nice to turn Stranger Cookies into Acquaintance Cookies.

It's interesting, I enjoyed doing the in-person swap last year, and I also enjoy getting faceless spontaneous mail cookies. I feel like it's a win either way.

I'm thinking about testing that recipe Johnny Wallflower linked, but the dough is supposed to rest for at least 2! days! I wonder if the cookies turn out good just because you end up anticipating delicious cookies for 2 days?

Y'all get to enjoy the fruits cookies of my reverse engineering labor. I got dragooned into making my wife's family's traditional cookies after her dad passed away, and one recipe in particular (known only as "Christmas Rolls") was going to kill me without any sort of oral tradition to go with it:
4 cups flour
2 egg yolks
1 cup cream
1 yeast cake
1 cup butter

Work yeast cake into flour with fingertips. Then work in butter. Add cream and egg yolks. Knead until smooth. Keep in refrigerator overnight. Roll small bits of dough in powdered sugar paper-thin. Fill with ground nut meats and sugar, roll up. Let rise about 1 hour. Bake at 350°, 15 to 20 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet.
I had eaten these before, but I'd never seen them made. My wife had never made them. "Roll small bits of dough in powdered sugar" sounded to her like dipping a ball in the sugar, but then that's impossible to roll thin. I figured out that really meant that you "flour" the counter with powdered sugar and as you roll out the unsweetened dough (with a rolling pin) it gets enough of a coating to get crispy on the exposed edges. She didn't know what sort of nuts to use for the "nut meats" and had no idea how much to use. For the first couple years the feedback was "they're good but they're not right." Eventually we realized that we had only eaten them stale. Her dad always made them ahead, froze them, then mailed them with a bunch of other cookies, and we only ate them after all that had happened. Turned out the problem was that when fresh they are, in fact, better than remembered.

My version has been deemed acceptable but last year I finally managed to type the right words into Google and learned these are called kifli (and at one point a recipe was printed on Fleishmann's yeast packets). We had already figured out that we needed to use walnuts, I use demerara sugar in the filling, and I add a little salt. People On The Internet, it turns out, roll out big discs and cut them into wedges instead of rolling out each piece individually. I'm going to try that this year, but my wife insists on an A/B test against the individual ball method. We both agree we're not adding any liquid ingredients to the filling.

And that's only one recipe out of six they used to make every year. I still can't get the date nut swirls right, but apparently her dad used to complain about them every year, so I'm not alone. I never should have let her know I liked baking.

For the record; I am happy to be put in a group with other people on diets outside of the norm, wheat/gluten free, vegan etc.

Also where is the cookie line? Are brownies in or out? Flapjacks (UK not US)? If the rules have been chipped into stone - where could I view them?

Germany - 1
Hong Kong - 1
Singapore - 1
South Korea - 1

We encourage everyone to sign up, but if you're in one of the underrepresented countries and are on the fence about participating, know that there are some people already signed up that could use a swap partner (or several!).

While the assignments are going out, I have put together playlists with the favorite song picks.

The Spotify playlist has 60 songs and is almost 3.5 hours long. (URI: spotify:user:1236893927:playlist:7zB66bSyc0dqImyk0JTRBC )

There were a few tracks that were not available on Spotify, so I made a supplemental YouTube playlist. And since some may prefer a YouTube playlist anyway, I added songs that were picked by multiple people to fill it out some.

The following songs had the most mentions:
Carol of the Bells - 6 (by Mykola Leontovych/Peter J. Wilhousky)
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York - 5
Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You - 5
Bing Crosby - White Christmas - 4

And finally, there's one song that several people picked that was a MeFi Music Song: Jingle Rock Bell by Lentrohamsanin

Quick update: I read the Jingle Rock Bell thread and realized that there were two YouTube versions created, a literalist video and a karaoke performance! So I have added those.

Hooray for cookies! I am curious about something. Every year I've signed up indicating that I have no dietary restrictions and can make and receive anything. And every year I get placed into a group with dietary restrictions that invariably invalidate all of the exciting cookie ideas I had before I got my assignment. I'm still a good sport and am happy to play along (although I've never baked gluten-free in my life and am intimidated) but I'm just curious if there are ever any groups with no restrictions at all. Or does my lack of restriction just make it more likely that I'll be placed in a restricted group because I can fit into any group? Perhaps I just need to not plan any cookies at all until I find out what kind of restrictions I have to work around. Either way, hooray for cookies!

1) Biscotti is like a desiccated cookie? They are not something I'm going to put my cookie court barrister wig on about, certainly, but I don't think of them as cookies. Who can say!

2) This year there were 28 groups; 5 had no dietary restrictions whatsoever. The assignments are based on a combination of geography (main criteria), compatibility of dietary restrictions (no ALL MEAT paired with VEGAN RIDE OR DIE), and whether the person has individually written me to request a different outcome ("Hey I got paired with 2 people who didn't send cookies last year; please give me a different group this time?").

3) Cool Whip 4ever

Team Stollen, your cookies are baked and cooling as we speak! I still need to make a trip out to get appropriate containers, etc. but they will be on their way by the deadline.

Can confirm that easternblot's postage method, like their cookies, is impeccable.

This swap has made me so happy (even before I stuffed a cookie in my gob), thanks everyone for participating!

Team Biscotti: the dough is resting right now. After my dance lesson, cookies will be baked.

I regret to inform Group Scone that I will not be mailing any cookies until next week at the earliest, because I don't want to ship my cold along with them. It's day 12 of symptoms and day four of antibiotics, so I think the way these things go I should be able to start baking next week.

My contributions to Team Pizza went out last night, and it looks like I got someone in my group this year who was also in my group the last year I did this (at least, your mailing address was in my account at my local pack-n-ship). Yay!

I mailed out my cookies to Team Strudel yesterday! As for packaging- well, I broke my ankle in September and am still at least a week away from being allowed to walk (I feel your pain, LeftMyHeartInSanFrancisco, it's only very recently that I've had the energy, coordination, and patience to be able cook or bake, and everything takes at least twice as long as usual) and there currently is no such thing as a quick jaunt to the store for me, so I sent my husband out to pick up some cheap tupperware. I said "look at the height of the stacks of cookies, they're each 6 cookies tall" and he came home with... these guys. Uhhh, my cookies are pretty thin, but even with careful overlapping, I can only fit 4 cookies in each of those. So everyone got two separate gift-wrapped containers, each with 4 cookies (I had extras, plus that keeps them from rattling around in there too much). I guess this is also the holiday tupperware swap!

My car was in the shop yesterday (still is today, but at least now I’ve got a loaner...), so groups Almond Roca and Fudge, your cookies are getting mailed out today!

Secretariat, sorry to hear about your ankle (broke my leg last year so I've been there) -- I'm so impressed that you still baked and mailed cookies -- the resilience you've surely added will make them taste even better!

Aah, got my first box of cookies today! Right as I finished up lunch, perfect timing.

Teams Strudel and Tiramisu, your cookies are in flight!

Team Sorbet, I mailed the cookies out today! I am not sure if the delicate cookies I baked this year will do a good job of arriving intact so I am just hoping by some grace the hard-working folks at USPS are kind of the packages. The post office was absolute chaos today so I know that's wishful thinking, but I can say the crumbs that I taste-tested from the cookie sheet WERE quite tasty.

Got my first box of delicious cookies from Team Biscotti! Thank you LeftMyHeartInSanFrancisco!!! Trying very hard to not eat them right away b/c Mrs. Lobster is overseas right now and won't be back until next Thursday to try them with me.

I got my cookies for Teams Biscotti and Crème Brûlée wrapped up and ready to go. I will package them up tomorrow and send them out on Monday.

OK cookies are posting to Team Cool Whip today. I have never done Christmas cookies sans nuts, coconut, and alcohol, so I got a little creative and I hope y'all don't hate 'em.

Cookie time!!! I just shipped out all my packages for teams Biscotti and Crème Brûlée.

Okay, Team Strudel was AMAZING and I have received all of my cookies and they are, hands down, the best thing about the holiday season thus far. This was my first time participating and will now become an annual tradition!!

Got my second package from team Biscotti today! Filled with highly aromatic spiced cookies! Still trying very hard to not eat anything until Mrs. Lobster returns later this week.

Thank you, amapolaroja! Can't wait to dig in!

Team Strudel, everything has arrived and was so good! Would you believe I've almost eaten everything already? I guess I have been sharing them. But nearly gone, so soon!

OK I got some really lovely cookies today (plus peppermint fudge!), but they are from different people than I sent cookies to. Did I fork this all up? Or is that how it works?

Uh-oh.

I'm on Team Cool Whip, and my cookies were sent Saturday, and they were chocolate-butterscotch.

Two more packages have arrived. Got everything from Team Biscotti now. This last package contains deliciously smelling chocolate cookies of some sort and some kind of fascinating roll looking things I haven't yet identified from acidic. Thank you! Having a really hard time resisting that smell... so good!

First package from Team Crème Brûlée: a solid serving of delicious looking cranberry bars, a packet of walnut orange scone white tea and a nice card courtesy of topophilia! Thank you so much!

Two days to go until Mrs. Lobster's return. I am weakening... holding on but definitely weakening. Must. Not. Eat. Cookies. Yet.

*sigh*

My biscotti-that-are-totally-cookies went out yesterday to groups Rita's Water Ice and Cake Pop (this last group includes you, jeoc - maybe you were also in two groups and missed one of the emails?).
I've received very tasty shortbread, two kinds of yummy thumbprints, and I just opened up some molasses cookies and fudge.

OK yeah. I didn't get the initial email(s), and our fearless cookie leader kindly forwarded team Cool Whip info to me - I didn't realize there was another group.

I just found that info in my spam. And yay I can make rum balls for Cake Pop! Look for cookies later this week.

Group Scone, I apologize for my extended delay, as I went directly from sinus-infection-with-cough to norovirus-with-fever and I am only now 48 hours past the fever. Your cookies have all been delicious and will be rewarded. Eventually.

Team Eton Mess has filled me with festive cheer and amazing cookies. Mr B agrees that this is an excellent new tradition. Thank you team, thank you organisers, thank you Mefi.

Another package arrived today from Team Crème Brûlée! A boatload of delicious Pfeffernüsse accompanied by a lovely note courtesy of meemzi. So awesome! What a blast from the past! I love Pfeffernüsse but for some reason my mom never made them as part of her x-mas line-up back in Germany and so I would have to trade for them with friends. Kinda like this swap actually. Thank you so much!

Thanks for another great year, everyone!

Just the way I like it.

An unofficial submission, and also unbalanced because I didn't give anything back - but if anybody tells you perrouno doesn't bake an excellent cookie they are lying.

Just boxed up cookies for Group Scone! Also finally created a Spotify account, and I didn't realize I should have specified an artist for "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" Barbra seems to be doing a slower, even more syrupy version of Barry Manilow's arrangement (with the Manilow Modulation™, but without the opening verse). The one you want, though, is Nancy Wilson. So good. (That one modulates too, but doesn't call attention to it). Ella's is good too but I feel like the Nancy Wilson recording is canonical, even without the verse.
