Right Post at the Right Time October 25, 2017 7:51 PM Subscribe
I had a pretty terrible yesterday and a somewhat grumpy today. Towards the end of my work shift I switched tabs over to MetaFilter and I saw Wordshore's delightful post on the new Animal Crossing game. And it's cheered me right up. Something was just right about this post and it hit me at the right time. I thought I'd share my joy and gratitude about that here. Feel free to share your own stories of posts that hit you at the right time. Maybe its the linked subject or the comments, but something just worked and it made your day like this one made mine. Thank you Wordshore. :)
Most recently, Please, my cat Pierogi, she’s very missing is my "this is THE BEST POST" post. I was on vacation last week and am still pretty relaxed from it but I am certain that this post will be something I return to when I hate everything.

Oh! And from a few months ago, the post about the guy rebuilding his garage (aka the grosh) is fantastic. I don't have a garage and I never intend to rebuild anything if I can help it and it is still just a wonderful read.

Cats ringing bells for treats has been giving me a lift most afternoons at dreary work.

The post about Mel Gibson's odious personality and role in the Daddy's Home sequel also brought me much delight, though not because of the actual subject matter (which is ugly and depressing), but because of the consistent derailment into Star Trek & Friends mashup/casting.
Trying to find joy in little things helps and posts that aren't exclusively about politics/racism/sexism make MetaFilter a lovely place to keep visiting.

I was a big contributor to that, largely because of the the fact that I just had had it with the ongoing shitstorm of everything.
I needed it, it was so much fun and it was fun to have fun with some other MeFites. Completely the wrong thread for it, and I'm sorry it derailed a space for an important conversation that I know some people wanted to have. But I am still giggling about the ideas, and I'm not upset that I found some joy, but I do feel that joy came at the expense of some other people not having the space they needed for processing something important to them, which is bugging me. So, yeah. Sorry to anyone who felt that way about that thread; it was just a moment to laugh or cry and to paraphrase Vonnegut, I chose to laugh because there was less clean up afterwards. For me, at least. I also read this twitter thread this morning, about Not James Spader on a date with a girl in a wolf onesie, and I share it here as an offering of bizarre things you find on the internet that make you laugh for anyone in need of a laugh.
I've also decided to try not to read the politics threads for a bit.
In my own life, I've found a small group of people my own age who want to play D&D and I've gone all in; I've spent every evening for the past two weeks writing up the world, the first adventure, and so on. We did session zero last week, and tomorrow night is actual gameplay. It's a creative outlet I've really needed, I guess - and without a group of people waiting for me to create, I haven't felt the urgency to do it. So I need to think how to apply that to other areas of my life, in terms of getting working with my creative impulses around writing, etc.
Stay well, fellow Mefites.

Totally have to agree with Fizz here. That thread is marvelous, and I just posted to that effect.

Most of my work is to collate, synthesize and analyze the evidence for (and against) the use of games in education, learning and teaching. This is for various clients in the education, governmental and private sectors.
Very recently I'd gotten into a slight rut with an ongoing piece of work and was struggling to come up with games - any game - that fitted a very specific criteria. All the more annoying as this is a great time for games (and Nintendo especially are having one heck of a year). But yeah, I could not find the right game to fit this criteria list.
And about that time, the paperclipper post hit MetaFilter and whoa! click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click perfect! It fits the criteria! So that was the example I used. And the comments to the post were also useful in avoiding bottlenecks and other hold-ups in progressing through the game. Therefore, thanks juv3nal for the post.
(as a side-effect, I lost a significant part of the next three days due to that game, but as it was both useful and enjoyable, and one of my all-time favorite clicker games now, that's not a problem)

The first three that come to mind are these, that have brought me video joy this year:
"I put my thing down flip it and reverse it" - selfnoise's post about matrix multiplication was fun (and later Shmuel510's post about flipped music with the same title) - but honestly, it was the title that got me onto a Missy Elliott jag which was much needed in that particular moment. (Work it, if anyone is asking themselves right now "should I work it?", let Missy assist)
cubby posted this video series, of Rhode Island shipwright Louis Sauzedde building a wooden boat from scratch, including cutting down the trees, over the course of many months. I just loved them, made my month. I still go back to them sometimes just to watch ten minutes of Louis caulking some old shear planks or something. He's in the middle of doing a new series now, building a dory, but I've been saving them.
escape from the potato planet posted the historic farm tv series with Ruth Goodman et al- Victorian Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm, etc. I've gone through almost all of them now, it's been my de-stressing material for months. Just great. (For Americans or other non-BBC-enabled people, you may have to dig around a little on youtube to find versions of each episode that haven't been taken down yet)
