happy mefi to me October 22, 2017 4:31 PM Subscribe
Oh hey. I guess I've been here for ten years and counting.
I missed the big Mefiversary, but wow. I started reading this site looking for a replacement for Memepool, and bought an account a years or so later. I was 19 then, and still a freshman in college. Now I'm making plans for my upcoming 30th birthday.
I could gush about how this site helped convince me to move to NYC (where I've lived for more than six years now), or how it introduced me to a bunch of amazing authors, or how it helped me through my struggles with my sexuality, or how it helped me meet a bunch of wonderful people, some of whom helped he start writing fiction for the first time, or about a billion other things. But instead I'll just say, thanks. You guys are great, this site is great, and it's shaped me in more ways than I'll probably ever really know. Here's to the next decade.

January 28, 2007. In the Reddit thread on the 21st anniversary of the Challenger disaster, someone linked this gem by eriko. The colour scheme here felt wholly unprofessional, but I stayed.
I was halfway through 16. Stopped caring what my parents or teachers thought. You lot are responsible for making me the adult I am today. You are my bad influence.

Totally disagree with the disgusting celebration of those specific anniversaries delineated with respect to the so-called "natural" numbers - which will inevitably lead to the destruction of our society.
Let's face facts: the existence of the continuum of real numbers has been a central feature of our mathematical religion at least since George Cantor conclusively proved that there are more diagonals in heaven and earth than were dreamed of in Leopold Kronecker's philosophy. Notwithstanding the elegance of such demonstration, the unenlightened masses still cling to their superstition that some numbers - the briefer kind - are more "natural" than others. This is a depressing prejudice, and evidence (if any was needed) that the human mind is biased in favour of the limited and simplistic, in contrast to the rich and complex.
In that context, I submit that we enlightened beings with MetaFiltesian co-ordinates should have no truck with the false naturalism of positive integers, and instead celebrate only those anniversaries whose numerical values form an uncountable set. Such a policy would see an uncountably-infinite increase in the number of anniversaries to celebrate, which can only be a good thing.
For example, we have in this thread only ONE opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of showbiz_liz's MetaFilter participation. How much more just, how much sweeter it would be to celebrate the uncountably infinite number of years both less than and greater than (but not including) 10 (or 9, 11, etc) since showbiz_liz's point of origin on the MeFi continuum? Anniversaries need not be "natural" or even "rational", but rather we should welcome as an appropriate mark of respect (in, and not only in, showbiz_liz's case) a joyful explosion of anniversaries irrational, transcendental - and even those incapable-of-being-expressed-in-a-finite-number-of-words!
And if have done the minimum to convince you of the correctness of my thesis, it remains only for you to assent to this policy by Voting quidnunc kid #0.9634552377820902347826346734824519230109837612346491293846120305767312349701019088937366616198383773408848787623545723647283748927349505762967343788235635634732910094488476400018918724234326749576476876833232445354656576868977541892348909128123123123100906287333836747746490578690562423748569694783984729209542735340500506975716652431888888888888888
