Jessamyn I are back in normal podcast business, making up for lost time after last month's Ask A Moderator show by trying to recap two months of MetaFilter despite neither of us having the time to prepare. The result: a goofy biggun at an hour and forty five minutes, covering as much as we can from February 8th through April 3rd.

Just to explain where I was on April 1, and why Faves & Flags couldn't kick off sooner, since cortex' explanation was kind of "frimble had a thing, I dunno": I was officiating a roller derby bout across town. I've done that before, but this was my first time as head non-skating official. That meant that I was also responsible for a bunch of organisation and making sure that a dozen other people were relaxed, comfortable and ready and able to do their jobs (and thus couldn't shift it around).
I got home on time (Wiener Linien is seriously the best public transport) and we did a last pass through, making sure that everything worked and fixing up some oversights before finally, at about 22:00 my time, opening the MetaTalk thread.
Then I could relax, which I consider a minor miracle, because the whole thing just kind of worked, and people had fun with it. By midnight, I was even comfortable in the notion that nothing was going to break horribly.

I'm sure there's still a lot to like about it, but for me: He started interviewing a bunch of musicians, which I was less interested in. And Maron's underdog schtick really only works if he's not one of the most popular podcasters with his own TV show. I found his neuroticism appealing at first and then eventually less so and more an indicator of his own bubble. And he's weird with women to the point that I didn't want to hear women come on his show to have him talk to them about that one time they almost slept together. Likewise people of color, he's just so ... weird with many of them. And I heard a few where he'd barely done any research and it just put me off of it (Like Andy Samberg was like "Yeah my wife is a singer" and Maron was like "Oh that's nice" and I was like "SHE'S JOANNA NEWSOM YOU GIT").
The QI podcast often has female guests who are treated appropriately and the one woman who is regularly on holds her own and they talk about "tricky" stuff (mostly sex-related stuff) without it turning into some hurf durfery.

WHAT HO, MODS.
Jessamyn, isn't the word "merci" in the name of the "Merci Train" used in the sense of "thank you"? (Honest question: I took German and Russian and Spanish in school, but only learned scraps of French in conversation.)
I mean, the entire trainload of gift-stuffed boxcars was an expression of gratitude by the nation of France, right? Train-spotter web site Theme Trains says:

I mean, the entire trainload of gift-stuffed boxcars was an expression of gratitude by the nation of France, right? Train-spotter web site Theme Trains says:
French veteran and railroad worker named Andre Picard stated a movement to send surplus WWI era boxcars to the US filled with tokens of appreciation from the people of France to the people of America. In all, 49 boxcars would be sent -- each packed with mementos from French citizens of every age and class. But that's just hair-splitting. I really loved the post, and was excited to get to talk about the little town of Woonsocket, RI, for a while!

Honestly, I loved the relaxed nature of this particular episode. Or is that just masked panic?
For me just actual decompressive goofiness I think; despite the riffing about not being prepared, I wasn't really worried about it and there's always more good MeFi stuff than we can cover in a normal month so there's no concern about coming up short on content.
Getting April Fools out was a whole-team crunch (one of these years we'll get our pacing better, he says every year) and that it went over well was a huge relief and a...really nice feeling? Really nice super positive feelings on the site are something I value a lot and it's been bumpy out there for a while so it was good to have that happen. But I think honestly the crunch crunch crunch CATHARSIS flow of it tuckered me out a bit; a friend asked me yesterday how my weekend was and I just sort of stared blankly for a few seconds because I couldn't for the life of me remember what I'd done this weekend; I think my brain was still recovering a bit.

Here's the wikipedia epithets, I think like 75% of epithets came from here and 25% were goofy things we made up. I sat and typed it up late one night and I kept getting distracted and having to click to find out why Michael VII Dukas, Byzantine Emperor was called the "Minus-a-Quarter." (The currency devalued by a quarter during his rule!) It is a very interesting page!
The joke that kind-of initially got us riffing on D&D was about Sue the T-Rex at Chicago's Field Museum who was running a D&D game on Twitter, which was all over my very Chicago-y, very nerdy social media feeds.

The best epithets you did though are the ones like "[persons name] the staff". Like, there was some queen or king or something who was just a person with a staff! How weird is that??? Oh and that other one, "[persons name] the retired". I think that's Pope Benedict XVI's epithet? No but its really funny when you see someone on MeFi with that next to their name, ha ha! Like, you're all "huh did you used to be a POPE??" - ha ha ha! But seriously though you guys should turn off your Faves & Flags handles in this thread, this one is actually about serious stuff.

I don't remember what Jess' take on scotch is, other than that I think I'm the most enthusiastically pro-brown-liquor person among MeFi staff past and present. We have done one or two podcasts during which a beer has been consumed; I'm not sure things would improve in terms of Successfully Doing This Particular Podcast if we dug in deeper than that, you'd probably just end up with me going on significantly more long-winded tangents that have nothing to do with MetaFilter. At which point the thing to do is just come to Portland and feed me drinks instead.

Speaking of misunderstandings and podcasts, I highly recommend the new TAL/Serial product Shit Town.
Might be nice to have a Ask a Former Employee podcast, welcoming Matt and PB back with a podcast full of questions from members for everyone but Cortex. I love you guys, but I'm also a sentimental olde fool and miss those guys. I'd love to catch up. Match that with the delightful Ask a Mod podcast and it could be golden. Of course it's just as possible that it could be one of those dream story, dream cast, dream director projects that turns into Suicide Squad.
I always thought of Fish or Cut Bait had to do with big fish fishing. Sometimes it takes a long time to bring in a big fish, and some fisherman aren't up to it, so cutting the bait isn't just cutting the line and letting the hook and worm sink, but instead a measure of stamina, and an admission that the fish you're battling with wins. But I don't really fish myself and have probably read too much Hemingway.
Claymation butt. Googly eye butt.
Yes, yous guys should start including Fanfare. I've been really enjoying it lately and I think there's fodder there.

I have a pedantic complaint.
The current podcast song has a lyric about how you will “chat with somebody about the best of the web”. This has exactly the same number of syllables as “chat with each other about the best of the web”. As such, I think that it would be quite correct and polite for you to re-record the song using the latter lyric and then use whichever recording is appropriate based on whether or not there is a guest.
Thank you.

I don't drink much any more for medication-interaction reasons but scotch is definitely my thing and I would happily compete in that arena, yeah. (I can drink, just not too often and not in great quantity. Which, if the scotch is good enough, isn't necessary.)

You may not feel like you're in a dialogue, but when I do things like make a dumb 69/"nice" joke in the podcast thread before listening to the podcast and discover that exact kind of joke was discussed, I feel very talked to.
(I also talk back to jessamyn and cortex when I'm listening to the podcast in private...like way more often than I should.)

I just sort of stared blankly for a few seconds because I couldn't for the life of me remember what I'd done this weekend; I think my brain was still recovering a bit.

Sorry cortex, but that happens to all of us.
Looks like hippocampus and amygdala weren't pulling their weight for a while there.

This podcast powered the vacuuming and steam-cleaning of the entire apartment, plus quite a bit of toy pick-up. Jessamyn's metadata disappointment was a pretty amusing through-line for the episode! Thanks, podcast crew!
Also, I am running a D&D campaign for some friends (inspired by prize bull octorok's Twitter game), and I, too, used a startup as a central plot force! In our case, it's a secretive startup that makes an orange energy drink that has developed a crazed fandom.

For reasons I can't entirely explain, I'm delighted to discover that the "eat the best part first" vs. "save the best part for last" division also causes minor drama in the lives of other couples.
As a rather meticulous "best part last" person, I'm struggling to recalibrate my strategy now that I live in a place where it is literally impossible to order a meal in a restaurant small enough to count as a reasonable single portion. Judging exactly what fraction of the quesadilla one should finish before spreading the remaining avocado on the carefully protected charred tasty bit requires real skill. Some day I'll perfect it, and my "best part first" spouse will no longer be able to gloat that I've waited too long and thus failed to actually enjoy the best part.
Hmm. Now I'm wondering if this was the same podcast where that discussion occurred. I'm 80% sure it was. But that was on a plane a while ago. As much as I love the podcast, listening to the whole thing a second time just to search for that minute blurb sounds daunting right now. Apologies if I'm wrong. (But it's still a vitally important topic that deserves heated debate and public discussion, even if this isn't the right place for it.)
