Duolingo Clubs January 29, 2017 11:31 AM   Subscribe

Duolingo has added clubs, to allow people to learn languages together. So for Mefites who'd like to all come and Duolingo together I made a club. Come join a club and we can all learn together.

I think clubs are only 15 people, so we may end up needing other clubs, I'm not sure how many active Duolinguists there are on MeFi.
I am learning dutch, so I guess if we hit the limit we can split out by language?

Anyway, to join the Metafilter club you can use the code: MCXQ9T

Well Gouda you like them apples? I tried joining but it said I had to be learning Dutch to join. I can start a Spanish club later if no one else does.

Oh, this would totally get me back on the Duolingo Spanish train again. I have been neglecting it for a long time and looking for some encouragement to get back in.

I created a Metafilter Spanish club, here's the code: EQS46W

Also, for anyone not clear on how to access Duolingo clubs, you have to be using the iOS or Android app (not the browser/website) to join or create a club.

I'm also in for a Spanish club! In fact, I was just about to do some practice. I'll set it up now. :) Thanks, nightrecordings!

MetaFilter auf Deutsch: YMQW8S

I used to do Duolingo Dutch, but stopped for now while I focus on German. I'll join MeFi Dutch when I get back on my Dutch train!

Me uni el club espanol. I seem to have a really hard time sticking to a project like language but I have come back to the duolingo app a few times. Now what we need is a "news in slow spanish" style simplified el mifi, with mods who have infinito conjugation paciencia. :-)

Ugh, Duolingo has KLINGON in development, but still no sign of Japanese. Alas.

(And yes, I know there are other Japanese resources out there and I'm taking classes but it feels like everyone else gets to hang out on Duolingo!)

I've been doing Spanish and am thinking of picking up Russian again. (Took two years of college Russian and still remember the alphabet, but my vocal and grammar are super rusty.) I'd join clubs for both!

Peppermind do you have a code for your french club? I would join!

posted by holborne at 9:40 AM on January 30, 2017

Just joined the Spanish club! You do need to be on one of the apps, not the website, to join. I never use the website myself - I don't know if clubs are available there after you've joined one from the app.

Joined the Norwegian club :).

(One of the things that keeps me doing Norwegian is just such things as the wives not liking the cats. Best so far is 'I am sitting on the floor crying and eating bread', but I also like the persistent interest in whether or not I am wearing underwear, 'I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket', and 'The dress is blue and black!')

That's what keeps me going in Danish, too. Especially the Danish bears.

The bear rides a motorcycle.
The bear gave birth to a duck.
The bear takes the attorney's wheel and runs away.

posted by moonmilk at 7:09 AM on January 31, 2017 [4 favorites]

So Duolingo's exercises are as absurd in other languages too? I nearly gave up when my phone started predicting that whenever I typed the word "eat", the next word should be "butterflies".
posted by peppermind at 7:59 AM on January 31, 2017 [4 favorites]

moonmilk: you're killing me with the bears, I have Danish on my list but am trying to close out some languages before working on others!
posted by carbide at 8:11 AM on January 31, 2017

Thanks for starting this up!

I'm surprised how much I've retained even though I've been away from it for months and months. There was a comment somewhere recently that said in order to speak a new language you really need to talk and the new bots really illustrate this. I definitely think differently when I'm conversing. I've realized that most of the time I speak Spanish with someone else it's mainly by rote with stock phrases otherwise I fall into Tarzan-speak territory.

And is it just me, or is there a lot of clicking in Duolingo?
posted by Room 641-A at 8:20 AM on January 31, 2017

Dutch is predominantly obsessed with ducks.

The first Duck, the important duck.
The 21st Duck.
I have a duck. I have YOUR duck.
The Duck has a colourful hat.
DUCKS!

Oh also
"Honden houden niet van hoeden." (Dog's don't like hats)
It just a lovely phrase.

I joined the German club, may join French or a Spanish club if I can get back into them too. Really wish they offered Somali though.

By the way, if you join on your phone, then do lessons on your computer, it works fine (just doesn't tell you where you are competition-wise until you're back on your phone).

It's true, duolingo's phrases are kind of bananas in many languages. I especially appreciated that time when my Spanish lesson tried to push me towards serial killing.

Swedish ones that I've screenshotted:

* The nineties called and wanted its shirt back.
* What a big sausage you have!
* There is a monkey sitting in the bed.
* My sorrow is like a darkness.
* Everybody dies in the end.

This is great! Just joined the second Spanish club & hope this gets me back in gear. I've let it languish since November, like a lot of other things.

My favorite duolingo cleverness so far, in a chapter on clothing: "According to my cousin, the dress is blue and black."

Yeah, the obsession of the Norwegian lessons on underwear (mine and others) and bears does have me a LITTLE worried about my eventual plans to vacation there.

- I cry at night.
- He is just a mean old man.
- You have mean children.
- You have many boring books.
- My brothers are playing with the moose.

(also I got the other one wrong - it's 'I am eating bread and crying on the floor.')

But also? 'She has a beautiful wife' makes me very happy.

Obviously I need to get back to Swedish, though. I hadn't gotten to the good bits yet.

I've been keeping screenshots of hilarious Duolingo sentences. Album here. My favourite set of sentences are:

- It is over between us. (picture of two women)
- She will forget me. (one of the two women from the previous sentence)
- You look like my next girlfriend. (same woman as earlier)
- After she had left me, I could not sleep anymore. (different woman)

Also, as a freshly minted PhD in the sciences, I appreciate:

- Is that really science?
- The course of studies takes eight years

Also, is anybody else also amused by how limited the interactions are in the Duolingo Clubs? You can only comment or react to automatically generated posts, and the comments/reactions are limited to a set you can choose from.

Most of the duolingo languages I've dabbled in have those cartoon characters that are visible in tickingclock's funny screenshots - but for some reason, Danish doesn't have 'em. I'm grateful for that!

Cou cou! So happy to see everybody at french club! (The limit on comments is hilarious; also, where is 'Cou cou'?).

I feel like duolingo has changed a bunch - I've worked through the entire french course previously (btw I did not become magically fluent on finishing) and I remember the first time around, a good proportion of the questions were listening to French spoken and then writing it out (no translation). My oral comprehension skyrocketed from doing this. I can see it might not be so great for someone naive to a language but for anyone whose (American education) language instruction was heavy of the written and lacking in speaking and conversation, I feel like it's ideal. It's there somewhere I can get more french dictation quizzes?
posted by Tandem Affinity at 7:59 PM on February 1, 2017

That's true, "cou cou!" is essential. This whole club thing was my final motivation to give Duolingo a shot. I joined the French club and then did the checkpoint tests and apparently that means I got like a lot of XP very quickly??? So, um... sorry about that guys... :D (Strangely enough there wasn't a pre-prepped comment to express this sentiment!)

I'm augmenting my Norwegian course with listening to NRK, watching Norwegian television (okay - it's SKAM, I'm just watching all three seasons of SKAM over and over), and translating articles on Aftenposten into English by the simple expedient of writing them out in a notebook.

I like Duolingo, it's very helpful, but definitely you can't rely only on it for language learning. The clubs and social aspects keep me motivated to study, but my external augmentation helps keep me motivated to continue learning because OH MY GOD WHAT ARE THEY SAYING UGH.

We need more people in the Danish club! Danish is famous for being nearly impossible for English speakers to pronounce! How can you turn down a challenge like that? That number again is WDKP9N. Today I learned that bjørnen forsøger at returnere kjolen.
posted by moonmilk at 8:51 PM on February 3, 2017

So, I'm sure this will piss off any Danish MeFites, but my wife and I have been watching the Danish series Dicte, and to my ear, Danish doesn't seem super different from Swedish? I definitely recognize a ton of words as being the same or very close to the Swedish.

In fairness, I imagine my Swedish accent is awful.
posted by Chrysostom at 9:49 PM on February 3, 2017

Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian are pretty closely related. I can make sense of reading Danish and Swedish even though my main focus is Norwegian.

I don't know how true it is, but I read somewhere that if you speak Norwegian, it's relatively easy to get along in Swedish or Danish as well. It is evidently somewhat more difficult coming to Norwegian from the other direction, though? Maybe someone can shed light on that.

Last night when I was practicing Spanish, there was one Duolingo practice session in particular that kept insisting on words like, "the wall" and "the guard", as well as "the best", "facts", "sad", "wonderful", and - wait for it - "he is not an honest man." Maybe I'm just a conspiracy theorist, but Duolingo, are you trying to tell me something?

I think there are 4 dutch Duolinguists now.

There isn't a lot of interaction available, but I like that it's a place to look to see how other people are doing and maybe encourage you on a bit.
