I was looking for something in my history, when I ran across this Metatalk thread, that just turned into this rather quickly. Wondering if anyone else might have a favored example that's worth sharing. (Yes, I find funny derails -of the thread variety- entertaining.)
That pee in the sink thread is horrifying and now I have to go wash my hands from just reading it.

Man, I missed that Halloween candy thread due to being at a professional conference, but if I hadn't I would have shared the fact that my kid got THREE DRINKS in his bag this year, one of which was a motherfucking can of Diet Pepsi. Caffeine-free, but still. WHO DOES THAT?
The other two drinks were a Yoo-Hoo and one of those bug juice drinks in a the plastic barrel with the foil peel-off lid. Which... aren't much better. Plus, drinks smush the Reese's, which are the only decent candy in every kid's Halloween bag.

We had a neighbor who handed out hot cider (it's really cold here on Halloween) which was great except for the fact that kids would toss their cider cups nearly anywhere (it's a rural neighborhood, no trash cans) and it was worse than a thorough TPing.

My first boyfriend used to pee in the sink of his room in University Halls and later in a bedsit he rented - the kitchen sink in that case ffs - both of which had a shared bathroom in the hall which he couldn't be arsed visiting in the night. He made no bones about this as I found out on my first sleepover. So I've always known the sinkpee truth and thought I had come to terms with the mank and also assumed it was a young man/studenty thing. But this just made me turn to my partner in the middle of him watching football to ask out of the blue "Have you ever peed in a sink" to which he replied, bemusedly, "Yes. Um, why?" "Oh, you know, Metafilter" (him:eyeroll)
"So, like, when?" He didn't go to Uni so where was he, I wondered, that he couldn't make it to the toilet?
"Not sure."
"But, as an adult?"
"Well I couldn't reach when I was a kid."
"Yeah, but as a proper adult? Like after you were married [to ex-wife]?"
Looks sheepish "Yeah."
"But where were you that you were peeing in a sink when you were a grown up?"
"You know, like a B&B with a vanity in the room."
"You were on holiday as an adult with your wife and you peed in the sink with her in the room?? She had to brush her teeth in it!!"
"I mean it's not toxic, and you rinse it down after."
"WHO EVEN ARE YOU"
Once again, MeFi shines an unwelcome light on something that was quite happily living in the dark and stinking of piss.

poffin boffin: the halloween candy thread was hilarious and 3 months later i'm still cackling at the concept of "fresh" candy corn, like just picked, fresh off the candy corncob, the fruits of Old Farmer Candy's hard labor
Everyone knows that candy corn is mechanically harvested these days, which is why that peak freshness is all the more elusive. (But seriously, there's nothing worse than wanting a bit of candy, then digging through your house to find an open bag of old candy corn, which only upon biting into do you realize has actually turned to candy-colored rocks.)
So, what is everyone's favorite (or favourite) winter holiday candy? There's still time to pick up discounted goods, as I can attest to with a bag full of peppermint oddities, along with a few chocolate oranges that will magically appear on my co-workers desk tomorrow when they aren't looking.

Technically a lot of people treat Ferrero Rocher as holiday candy, but it can be had any time of year and so I don't count it as such.

No so really one of the most "wait wtf is this a thing" moments I ever experienced while consuming media was the first time I watched the movie Brodeuses (otherwise a quiet, sweet little French film) and the teenaged main character's female friend, during a sleepover, gets up and sits on the sink in her bedroom (which in itself is an odd idea to a non-European, though I can appreciate the practicality) and pees in it. And then doesn't wipe? I don't think? I had always rolled my eyes at the tired stereotype that the French were any less hygienic or more earthy but that gave my own teenaged self significant pause.
I am sorry to have returned to the subject after the nice change to delicious candy but I just.

Oh, man, the Halloween candy thread. I was gonna proclaim about KitKats being the ür-candy, but I restrained myself to some Nerds love. Which is good, because the very next week while raiding the office stash of leftover candy, I came across this affront unto all that is good and right. The chocolate they use to make the specialty bars is somehow of lower quality than the plain old stuff that goes into Hershey bars.

As someone who does a fair amount of Chocolatier-ing for fun, the quality of the chocolate in Hershey bars is not that high to begin with. It's a ratio thing. Lots of sugar and cocoa butter, but not so much chocolate solids. The purpose of a chocolate coating is not to hinder the eating of the candy and make things taste chocolatey. I would be shocked if it's indeed "chocolate" and not "chocolate flavored coating"

I posit that sink-peeing is perhaps more hygienic that stand up peeing in a toilet. Assuming you wash the pee down while rinsing your hands. Peeing into a toilet while standing up inevitably leads to a light misting of pee on the floor and walls and at times may lead to a splash or two on the edge of the toilet, which drips down to the floor. You probably won't wipe that up right away, especially at night.
TLDR; Sink pee causes less mess just make sure to rinse out the sink.
Sorry.

Now he is a fervent follower of the shower pee truth! It works so well!
Except for that time he peed on me by mistake. Thank goodness we were already in the shower...

I posit that sink-peeing is perhaps more hygienic that stand up peeing in a toilet.

1) Some of us like to use that shower in its other mode, BATHTUB.
2) Someone still has to clean it occasionally. You pee in the shower? Great, you get to clean the bathtub now.

Due to candy thread I brought Thrills to the fencing club hoping to trick all the kids by having them taste the penultimate Canadian candy. But they liked it. Every one of them liked it. Joke ruined by next generation.
Now Thrills is official club joke, and showed up in the gifts stolen on gift stealing night.
Then one of the fencing moms brought Chicken Bones (hi New Brunswick!) to New Years. And the kids didn't really go for it. And that is sweet, not like soapy Thrills. What gives, youth of Canada, what gives??? Hopefully you are not also all peeing in my sink.

billiebee: It's not like you use the shower tray for anything other than your feet
And peeing on your feet is actively recommended in some cases because it's a well-known home remedy for athlete's foot and chilblains. So there's that.
(Note that I'm saying well-known, not effective. I'm not getting into that debate.)
Chez Too-Ticky, the rule is very simple:
A gentleman does not pee in the shower
... while in the presence of a lady. And vice versa. I don't need to smell that.

I eat Kit Kats horizontally, AMA.

I have a hard time opening my mouth wide enough to eat them vertically.

I just want to say epitome, is one of those words that started out as one meaning, and became its exact opposite. Sadly, I threw out my antique dictionaries this year.

We've got a thread about famous derails and no one has brought up cortex's derailing a thread with a QWOP comment yet?

If they didn't want you to pee in the sink, they wouldn't install the sink at waist-height.
I am not picturing correctly the vertical/horizontal kit kat question -- I have only eaten them by feeding them into my mouth like a treebranch going into the chipper.

"Horizontally" in this case, I believe, is more precisely "without breaking them apart into individual Kits and/or Kats".
