New subsite idea: theveryidea.metafilter.com December 9, 2016 3:28 PM Subscribe
It would be a complement to Jobs and Projects - a place for Mefites to post ideas that they, personally, are not going to use, and thus make them freely available for other creative and talented Mefites to run with.
For example, the idea I just had for a story about a skimming phlebotomist vampire (like those tales of smart computer programmers who worked for banks and routed the rounding errors into their own accounts). I, personally, am not going to write that story. But maybe someone else would like to?
I'm sure frimble has plenty on their plate right now, but it kind of seems like a copy of the code base for Projects would be a good starting point.
This post is, of course, a meta, it being itself an example of an idea that I think would be cool but which I, personally, am not planning to implement. But if the community thinks it would be a good thing and the cabal thinks likewise, I would be delighted to see it exist in the world.

I once had an idea to somehow share My Pets by Alexandre Dumas somewhere in an FPP, but it didn't work out.
I mean, it's kind of a funny book on its own, and who knew the guy had a vulture from his trip to North Africa or that (also from his trip to North Africa but covered in another book) his brief observations on colonialism might for some call to mind W.E.B. Du Bois's concept of double consciousness. Although My Pets doesn't include that particular anecdote, it does have some stuff about how Dumas experienced being known as a person of color and how he related to his household—e.g. his Ethiopian valet de chambre and his Antillean zookeeper/valet, ironically (?) nicknamed for the Emperor of Haiti. But Dumas's novel Georges is considerably better known for drawing on his family history, and his six volume memoirs famously include a "highly romanticized" [NYT] portrayal of his father, "The Black Count" (previously), so none of this is news. Plus a relatively minor book from the Internet Archive probably isn't a great anchor for an FPP anyway, and however charming it may otherwise be, it does have problematic language. Still, since I had found that Peter Greenaway was planning to make a movie based on Dumas's travels in Russia (something that apparently Gérard Depardieu had also done?), I wondered if looking more at Dumas's non-fiction would take the idea somewhere. Unfortunately, I couldn't find his Russian travels free online in English—just his books on traveling in the south of France, sailing on the Emma and hanging out with Garibaldi's "Thousand" in Sicily, further travels in Sicily, and some stories based on his trip to the Caucasus. So that was an even bigger mound of books with no good summary or commentary article, and I basically gave up. But somewhere in the middle of all this, I'd been impressed by one person linked to Dumas, Adah Isaacs Menken, so I briefly looked for something more than an encyclopedia kind of article about her too. Her poetry is sort of interesting, and there are photo archives, but the one bit of commentary I could find that offered a real perspective on her seemed too short.
Anyway, yeah, it never narrowed down to something easy to consume as an FPP, but putting it all here seemed sort of in the spirit of throwing out an idea I'm not going to use on the off chance that someone else will find it interesting.

- A thoughtfully designed app for pain monitoring (esp viz a viz lifestyle factors, like sleep etc, and medication and/or supplements), for both iOS and Android. There are a few out there, but most of them suck, and all of the free ones do. E.g. most have a set and very limited bank of pain word descriptors - which I understand, it's simpler that way, and I guess you wouldn't want unnecessary duplication or overcomplication for people for whom English isn't a first language, or who might not have a super high level of literacy, but I'm not sure the already well researched & validated pain questionnaires (e.g. Melzack et al.) are used... There are also usually limits on the number of symptoms you can track - not great for people monitoring multiple symptoms or conditions. Often, no space for descriptions of onset, timing, duration, or lifestyle factors or meds/supplements. The kind or amount of data you can save or export for analysis is often limited. And the interface is just less than ideal, in a lot of them.) For a model of an interface I think is beautiful - I adore Simple Workout Log.
- I don't know if not that girl is still working on a planner for people with chronic conditions? But I think a "count your spoons so you can work and GSD" app - maybe integrated with a solid pain tracking tool - is a fantastic idea.
(I think collection of all that data over time could also be super useful from a public health perspective... especially as people pick up diagnoses, and lifestyle factors and treatments get logged - for developing predictive models for diagnostic algorithms or health services planning.)

While I might use something like this, I feel it benefits the giver far more than it benefits any potential audience. I feel like there's very few people that make things that are starving for ideas and need to go to an outside source. People that want to make things are usually drowning in ideas and starved for implementation time, in my experience.
Maybe cast as an idea graveyard, it'd be more honest. It could be a place to publicly put to rest ideas you're never going to get to so you can move on. Bury it and move on!

Very cool! (You're so quick!) Where will the answers go?
also. #asnotseenontv - a right- (and/or left-)handed handle for luggage/grocery carts, that extends forwards, parallel to the ground, with a 45 degree angle (on the side nearest the body) so you can pull using a secure, neutral grip that doesn't strain wrists or elbows, and a curve following the top/out-side of your hand around the other side, so if you want, you can relax your grip and the handle can just rest on your (neutral, comfortable) hand and just pull the thing that way. someone plz make this or direct me to where it exists please & thank you

Ideas are nothing, no writers or directors want your excellent idea because they themselves are full of creative ideas that they do not have the time and energy to realize. This is not an original thought, I read it elsewhere on Metafilter. An app which constantly monitors which specific underwear from your collection:
- You are wearing
- Is used and therefore awaiting laundry
- Is clean and fresh and ready for selection and wearing
This is synchronized to your online calendar and to any dating websites e.g. OKCupid which you are signed up to. For example, if you are arranging a liaison on a dating website for tonight after much frisky talk and you suspect that third base may be quickly reached, the app would detect this and send you a message such as:
- "You can choose between the frilly, lacy ones or the sleek silk ones"
- "Warning: the only underwear you have available to wear are the passion-killing grey briefs that your mom bought you in 1991 and you never threw away"
This would give you time to either purchase new underwear, or wash, dry and iron (you do iron your underwear previous to a date, yes?) the most appropriate selection. And would also mean avoiding the horror of, when dressing up for a date with the hot person you discovered online (at least their picture is), finding that you only have those grey briefs.
