123: NOT ME THAT DAY
 transcript  November 30, 2016 12:10 PM   Subscribe

We're podcastin' through the pain: me and jessamyn chat about MeFi, vent a little about the election, and talk about stuff like dealing with art vs. concrete activism and how people can't agree on which way to face in the goddam shower. This episode covers November 2nd through November 30th and runs about 90 minutes.

Audio fidelity notes!
1. Jess' mic was apparently too close to the ol' soundmaker this time out and so she's kinda distorted when she gets excited.
2. I was haunted by ambient hum because of a mic problem, and also a large truck kept driving by outside.

Other than that: crystal clear sound engineering perfection.

I also suffer from that.

It's the same mic I always use! We just need to remember to sound check beforehand because I'm so often on different computers.

You are a microphone?

I'm just harder to understand when I get excited. No microphone needed.

Even my written comments get 'kinda distorted' when I get excited. A very common problem.

I ran across the Nebra Sky Disc when putting together this post on different constellation systems, that may have been where you'd recently seen it, jessamyn. I hinted someone should make a post but after like four days I was like FINE THAT'S TOO LONG I'LL DO IT.

oh right and here's the goatse.cx pumpkin (SFW)

That is something I never expected to see an SFW after. Anyway not sure if I would be excited or frightened if my neighbor had a goatse pumpkin.

Woo, thanks for the music shout! This challenge has produced some absolute belters, and they're short enough that you can enjoy them all in one sitting, like an aural tasting menu :)

To pronounce that username, just imagine you're a surfer congratulating Firefly's mechanic on her fantastic hat. Sick lid, Kaylee!

I'm 3 minutes in and the depression about the election is already palpable.

I would like to share two highly personal reasons why I thought this was great:

1. I am laid up with a horrible stomach flu, and being able to put this on and listen while I am lying in bed feeling miserable was great. It was like having two friends over who aren't going to fuss over you, but just keep you company while you feel like shit and who are quite capable of entertaining themselves and you without any active participation.

2. I get to listen to it again because I fell asleep about half-way through (and I'm starting to feel better, for which I give partial credit to the previously unknown healing properties of the Metafilter podcast.)

MetaFilter: people whose brains I care about

I pronounce "fiat" as fee-aht which also sounds to me like fee-yacht. I hadn't heard cortex's pronunciation either but it is listed as one of the options at Merriam-Webster!

Looks like the original car company started with the acronym F.I.A.T. (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, i.e. Italian Automobile Factory of Turin) in 1899, and a few years later changed it to look even more like the regular word: Fiat.

Btw as a fan of mysteries/detective stories, I liked storybored's MeFi post A Canonical List (single-link post to the site called Clerical Detectives). It was posted on Thanksgiving, so mentioning it here in case anyone missed it.

Very impressed by the musicians here (as usual), and I learn so much just by listening.

I'd sort of wondered if the podcast schedule would be affected/delayed this month, so seeing this post was very welcome. I agree that the podcast has healing properties. :) It was really nice to be able to hear about MetaFilter stuff as always, and very helpful to hear you talk to each other about how you were personally dealing with life in the past month. Thanks cortex and jessamyn.

I, too, have been forgetting words I used to know and use! I started keeping track of them on a Twitter account…and then forgot about doing that.

Anyway, this phenomenon feeds into the pseudoscientific theory of brains as hard drive controllers that just start writing over stuff when there's not enough space.

Thanks for carrying on the with podcasting, podcasters!

Some kind of Maximum Overdrive situation?

Starting the Metatalk that led to the creation of the YOU WHAT wiki page shall be my greatest legacy. (Besides a Tumblr post I made that collected various gifs of Tom Hardy's vast array of crazy eyes and got more than 500 likes.)

Even though I know very well what Desert Bus is, every time I hear someone actually describe it out loud it still cracks me up. It really is the best possible concept for the shittiest possible game.
