Moderators' Day 2016 GET HYPE

Back in 2007 your humble narrator suggested, near the end of a rather challenging day at the comment factory, that we remember and honor June 13th as Moderators' Day henceforth-ish. Please join me in thanking all of our mods - past and present - for the hard and often thankless job they do every day to make MetaFilter one of the best places on the Internet. Thank you cortex, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, Eyebrows McGee, and vacapinta. Welcome and thank you to our new coder frimble, and special thanks to our moderators emeriti, jessamyn, mathowie, and pb.

Today would also be an excellent day to consider updating your recurring MetaFilter donation, or to make an annual donation, as I do.

Happy Mods Day again, and I apologize for all my contributions that have caused you angst...

(I have to say, I thought the election thread was getting less contentious as the Bernie stuff wound down, but now there's the Orlando thread *and* responses to the event by the candidates and surrogates in the election thread - that's two raging dumpster fires that require full time mod attention. I'm so sorry.)

How did I not know this holiday existed?! June 13th is my daughter's birthday! Today she turns 3. Thus, for the past two years, and for the foreseeable future, June 13th is a day for supervising a room full of people who barely have control over their own faculties as they run furiously in circles as the sugar from the cupcakes goes straight to the brains, overriding all sense of reason with an insatiable urge to steal everyone else's toys and then push them to the ground. This continues until everyone assembled has hit a wall (literally, in many cases) and gone down for a nap after collapsing from manic exhaustion. Then, the grownups retire to the living room with water-glasses full of bourbon and shell-shocked looks of disbelief tattooed on their faces. Light snacks are served.

If you don't also think that's the perfect metaphor for Moderator's Day, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm constantly reminded how lucky I am to work with such a thoughtful and patient group of people, that this strange and sometimes very stressful job is so much more manageable and livable than it might otherwise be thanks to their diligence and steadiness and compassion.

I went camping in the middle of nowhere all weekend, and came back to the terrible news in Orlando and the huge amount of extra stress and difficulty on the site as everybody in the community has been coping variously with it. And coming back and seeing, despite the extra demand on mods and community alike, that being managed as well as I could really imagine is just one more reminder of why I care about this community so much and how fortunate I am to work with the folks here.

It's been a pretty crazy year already, and it doesn't seem like we're gonna be done with it any time soon, but I know we'll muddle through as a community, and that's thanks in huge part to all the work that LM and taz and Jeremy and gnfti and EM do, and it's fantastic to have been able to bring frimble into the mix recently on the tech side. Y'all are the best.

I do confess to being periodically amused by how certain threads feel literally exactly the same as refereeing my small children's bickering. Up to and including giving time-outs for people who just can't let a point go!

I needed it today for my own processing, and I am really grateful too for your work in that thread. Thank you for forcibly keeping it from derailing away from the feelings of affected communities. I can't express how much I appreciate having a space that still felt welcoming to me to come to even after twenty four hours of discussion.

Every day I make the mistake of reading the comments on other sites is an unofficial mefi mod appreciation day. Their peculiar skillset comprising diplomat, editor, referee, and bar bouncer seems difficult, if not impossible to replicate elsewhere. Many thanks!

I'm kinda surprised that the modsquad didn't send the rangers in after Cortex with a note saying "I'm getting to old for this shit" or "You don't pay me enough to moderate the never ending trainwreck of 2016 election political threads and the Orlando thread".

Oh god. They're the angels in my online life that few people know about. Taz is my very own private time zone mod who is so patient and cheerful when I'm being tone deaf. Love you all. But special Taz thanks... and sorries.

And I've said it before, Jessamyn's is still the voice I try to emulate when I'm trying to "adult".

Lately, I have a habit where, when I see a thread that is a total shitshow or is otherwise clearly necessitating a lot of hard work from the mods, I just PayPal an extra $5 in for mod snacks. So mods, if you're up to your elbows in it and you see $5 come across from me, get a taco or an ice cream cone or something. It's not much, I know, but it comes from love.
