Favourites to Comments ratio June 9, 2016 11:46 AM   Subscribe

Is it possible to tease a total favourites to total comments ratio out of the info dumpster? I'm pretty sure stevewoz was at the top of that list however his recent comment might have put someone else above him.

If not anyone know of a user with a higher ratio than stevewoz's current 288:1
posted by Mitheral to MetaFilter-Related at 11:46 AM (38 comments total) 3 users marked this as a favorite

I don't know offhand, but if I were a betting person my money would still be on Woz. (in general)

I don't think the infodumpster has a query for that, but it would be calculable from the raw data in the Infodump itself. Like LM, my money's still on woz, especially given that the new one is picking up favorites fast as well.

The best contenders would be folks with very few comments, since it's the average that'll bring you down; a single comment or a pair from the subject of or an expert on a given topic who has signed up for that and then gone quiet feels like the likely model.

Also you'd have to decide whether to separate out comments and posts and how to handle comments made before favorites existed or back when they were still used really sparingly, a fight my husband and I have had when I try to prove mathematically that I am the best and most interesting person.

it's ALL posts and comments and ALL favorites across the board weighted by some average of typical MeFi user output that I haven't tried to figure out

I've been working for a few years to be the member with the most self-favorited comments. No idea if that's happened yet, because like all good goals, I never figured out how to check my progress.

I look forward to Woz's next comment in 2026.

I was thinking don't separate anything: # of favourites / count of all activity.

I was asking because the Woz holding that spot here always gave me the warm fuzzies and I'd be a bit dismayed if he was topped by some zero substance celebrity.

while we're on the subject could the infodump data be updated when someone gets the chance please thanks

I look forward to Woz's next comment in 2026.

It’s because of the clock rate on the 6502.

In a question asking for a picture of "Wozniak was depicted as a wizard", Woz shows up and proves that it's not a depiction at all. He is very much a wizard.

Sidenote: How is stevewoz's first comment not marked best answer!?

Also, was his more recent comment technically a self-poster?

I love how he just posts the naked Dropbox URL. It's like a mic drop in comment form.

Mr. Wozniak's "favorites" to "favorited by others" ratio is terrible though, and I'm shaking my slowly side to side while giving him a mild look of disappointment.

The most salient thing I got out of Woz's resurfacing was a reminder of how awful Ask was back in the day.

maryr: "How is stevewoz's first comment not marked best answer!?"

I'd argue it isn't a best answer. The question was why other people thought he was great and stevewoz is arguably the only person who isn't qualified to answer that.

Still at a 50% best answer:answers ratio he's probably in the top ten of that category too.

Also the Corpus needs to be updated. You promised me that about two years ago, cortex!

I don't know. With a line like, "I don't mind if people don't like me as long as it's for things I am." that's just beautiful self-assurance in action and inherently pretty great.

According to the current infodump, Woz is #1. The top numbers are all single comment posters:

Brendan Ecks, talking about how he created javascript.

An organic farmer, talking about the difficulties of food sourcing.

A new poster that signed up to say how much the Emotional Labor thread affected her.

The first person other than Woz to have a high ratio with more than one comment is Randall Munroe.

I'd be curious about the numbers if you set a minimum number of comments threshold (and/or looked at the Green and the Blue separately).

I judge my participation on this Internet website by "favorited by others"/"favorites" ratio.

As you unfavorite comments, your ratio approaches infinity! Infinity participation! Magic internet points for all. Unfavorite everything today!

It's all about the SFS (sum of favorite significance).

For favorites you have received f, SFS = Σf=1n (1/F)

Where F is the total number of favorites the favoriting user has ever given at the time of calculation. This causes SFS to go down over time if you do nothing.

Go ahead and take credit for a million favorites every time someone says they wish they could favorite your comment a million times. (just make sure you also add a million to F)

SFS doesn't quite model the concept, though. If Alice and Bob have each had one of their 10 comments favorited, but Alice got hers from cortex and Bob got his from newaccount2016, Alice should have a higher score even though the favorite cortex gave is one out of a much larger pool.

Let's call the theoretical ideal the Meta-score, and try to define a formula for it. The Meta-score of user U is the sum of all the favorites given to their comments and posts (perhaps with posts counting more or less than comments), with each favorite weighted by the giver's own Meta-score and their total favorite count. This should maybe be nonlinear, so that if someone doubles their Meta-score while also giving out twice as many favorites, the effect of their favorites on others' Meta-scores may have gone up or down. And the favorite-count-weighting itself might make more sense as a logarithmic function: the difference between someone giving one favorite versus ten is the same as between ten and 100.

The self-referential nature of the Meta-score lends it to being computed with a PageRank-like algorithm. Displaying it on everyone's profile should be a fun weekend project for frimble. :P
