Say hello to our new tech person, frimble!

I'm pleased to announce that we have found a new tech person to pick up the reins pb's setting down; I'm doubly pleased that it has worked out to be a member of the MetaFilter community, our very own frimble. Come say hello!

If you missed it previously, pb is departing as MetaFilter's tech person after nigh on a decade of keeping the ol' engine running and building pony stables. Consequently, we've spent the last month and change going through a hiring process for someone to take over pb's core responsibilities. (I talked a bit about process and expectations stuff for all this in this MetaTalk post).

And that person is frimble, who has spent the last few days getting to know MeFi's insides and pb's workflow and will be responsible for site maintenance starting at the beginning of June, working in a part-time capacity to keep things stable and up to date; they'll also work with me to figure out plans for site development stuff in the long term.

frimble is in Austria, does MUD coding for fun, is interested in accessibility in web and application development, and prefers they/them; they've been on the site for several years now, posting to the front page, geeking out about Infodumpery now and then in MetaTalk, and hanging out regularly in Chat.

I feel like frimble is a great fit for the position, and I'm super excited to welcome them aboard the team, and hope y'all will do likewise.

Hi, I'm frimble. I've generally been a lurker over the past couple of years. I've been trying over the past bit to get up to speed as quickly as possible, but as with most things, the transition is going to take some time.

I can't promise to be a replacement pb. Not only are we different people with different personalities, he's done a lot of great work, and I'm infinitely thankful that how the site works actually makes a lot of sense. While I hope to be at a point in a few months where I can start looking seriously at feature requests, my initial priority is going to be making sure that the site keeps functioning smoothly. Unfortunately, that means a focus on maintenance and bugfixes rather than further development.

I'm also not planning to lobby for radical changes: I'd be very happy with an ongoing pattern of gradual, incremental and thought-through improvements, on a site that's quietly running without any major problems or hiccoughs.

This is a big change in the life of the site, and I hope that, over time, I can live up to the footsteps in which I've been invited to follow.

Yay, frimble! I'm so very delighted we have another mefite aboard!

I might have missed it in the staff hazing welcoming chatter, but when I was first hired, I'm pretty sure one of the first questions from my colleagues was "tea or coffee?" As I remember, I was something of an outlier with my "omg buckets of coffee!" answer. So what is it? Are ye wi'me or agin' me? *puts up dukes*

Awesome news and welcome, frimble! As with others, you totally had me at does MUD coding for fun. It's been twenty two years since I could claim that, and yet it still hits a huge soft spot in my heart. Particularly because I also mostly dabbled in LPMuds and Discworld was back in that orbit (even if I mostly was on TMI/Nightmare/TMI-2).

Which is to say - your selection has already brought a joy of reminiscence to me and I welcome you as our new technical overlord.

i don't know-frimble-know-frimble, but after some conversations in chat where they blew my mind with their intelligence, level-headedness and humor, i found myself thinking now why the f do i not notice them on the blue or grey really? frimble could contribute so much to the discussion! metafilter needs to know how awesome this person is! which is not (primarily) a complaint about your being not high profile. it was a reminder to me there are a lot of people on this site who are not immediately noticeable and still probably have a ton to offer.

anyways congrats, and i'm sure mefi staff will find they're lucky to have you and everyone will love everyone the end.

and now of course you can change the chat subject line all the time.

PB did this thing with an etch-a-sketch, radial cathode tube and some electrical tape to keep the server gremlin free...

Congrats Frimble. That's about the jokeyst I'd get about PB because when I first joined, his reputation and skills rated top flight, we miss him and YOU must help hold us together on the tech end.

Let me be among the last to say "Congratulations, frimble, on getting one of the coolest non-billionaire jobs on the internet (and on Austria narrowly avoiding an electoral return of the Neo-Nazis)". Of course, having been hanging out in The MeFi ChatRoom (sometimes referred to as Tommy Wiseau's ChatRoom), I got the SPOILER of this news a few days ago when frimble got an "employee star" next to their name.

So MetaFilter gets a little less U.S.-centric, at least tech-wise. Of course, we've been reminded for years by Volkswagen commercials about the value of "German Engineering", and I hope "Austrian Engineering" is just as good and less obsessed with cheating on American regulations.

And you "had pigs and goats growing up", so I will make all my outrageous technical requests not for Ponies, but for Goats. (Have I mentioned the Surfing Goats near me lately?) Just keep up the wood gork.

Welcome, frimble, and from what you've already posted, I can tell that we're going to get along just fine. I certainly hope that cortex FedEx'ed you the employee handbook.
