Dear favorites, today you are ten. Despite mathowie telling us to "Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system" we've decided you mean whatever we want you to mean. Happy birthday. [as promised]

reminder: notable MeFi dates can be found on the MeFiWiki Timeline

So this is the day we can trade our favorites in for prizes right?

I'll take one of the dinosaur pencil erasers and if you give me until the end of the day to rack up some more, I should have enough for those plastic vampire teeth.

One of my April Fools ideas was to make a site called FavoritesExchange (with that amusing URL) and literally have a place where you could trade your MeFi favorites for various cheevos on other sites and do sort of an AwardWallet thing with it. But we scrapped it since it was a huge undertaking and 4/1 stuff is usually lighthearted and we figured it might make people fight all day. I am less concerned if people fight all day today!

Seeing a comment with 11 favorites does a weird thing to me. It's almost impossible for me not to click the + to make it 12. I don't know if that constitutes favorites altruism or favorites OCD or what, but I think there must be something I can learn about myself if I really dig deep on this one.

But I also hate it because none of my own comments have come up in the "Popular Comment" feed yet and buddy let me tell you I have had some real zingers that I thought would put me over the edge but - no. Some day, though.

People that unfavourite should not be allowed into this celebration.

So, here's the part where I confess my unhealthy obsession with favourites. At any given moment, I can probably tell you my favourites count to within +/- 3 favourites. That would be my "favorited by others" count, that is. Because despite my deep love of being favourited, I almost never favourite anything myself. Because I use favourites as bookmarks and I don't want them cluttered up with things I just thought were funny. It makes it harder to find the things I might want to read again for some reason.

And to my deep and lasting shame, I am also an unfavouriter. Some threads I bookmark for reasons that are point in time -- I need to know the information for some reason and once the reason is past, the favourite can go away. Some threads I bookmark because I am interested in reading them as they develop but have no pressing need to keep track of long term, so once the conversation dies down, the favourite goes away (less of this now that I can add things to my activity, but mostly I forget that I can add things to my activity and still do it with favourites). And every time I unfavourite something, I whisper a small apology to the person I am robbing of their precious, precious favourite, all while secretly hoping that they are less obsessed by favourites than I am and will never notice.

Sometimes when the number of favorites I have is nearing some cool looking number I text not_on_display so he can go fave something and be the one to make that fave number cool.

I once noticed that my favorites was over one of my very very favorite numbers by about 12 or so, so I nagged my husband to unfavorite me 12 times so I could get that number and make a screenshot of it be happy. For about 2 weeks because he didn't want to. Until finally he snarled okay, okay, I'll do it.

Only, in the meantime, someone(s) either cleaned up their favorites or decided I was a shithead; sensed with the MeFi Force I was being a shithead to my poor husband; or I just was a shithead; or whatever, and I lost a bunch. And I didn't notice. So when my husband sent me a screenshot of his unfavoriting with a NOW-are-you-happy and I went to see my beautiful beautiful number of faves. . . it was around 20 shy, the horror! Of course I couldn't ask my husband to re-favorite me at that point. And I swear it was about 6 months before I said anything that got favorites again.

I feel like I got exactly, maybe a little less, than what I deserved. But your comment makes me feel better!

"See, I look at it the other way -- I want to spread more praise than I receive, so I'm happy when my totals are off."

Same here. Well, I'm happy that mine are nearly equal for the same basic reason.

Which is really weird because that's been the case for several years. Right now the actual numbers are 26,978 and 27,423, which is a difference of only about 1.5%. And, like I said, this isn't a brief coincidence, it's been this way for the last several years. It's definitely not something I'm intending because I'm almost completely unaware of the number of favorites I give (other than noticing every now and then that the two numbers remain close). It seems really odd to me and I guess it means I'm consistent in how I'm favorited, consistent in how much of MeFi I read, consistent in how frequently I favorite what I read, and everyone else is consistent in what appeals to me. Taken together, that doesn't seem likely. And yet.

For years, I stubbornly stuck to having only one favorite, moving it from comment to comment as I found something "better" - because that's what "a favorite" IS, dammit!

Then I decided okay, I can have a favorite comment, AND a favorite post.

Much later, I decided I was probably overthinking the whole thing.

It's not too late for a favourites arbitrage Ponzi scheme, though.

I like that some people on this site exist because aside from posting really good stuff, they relieve me from caring anything whatsoever about totals. I do sometimes look at whether stuff I say gets favorites because I'm really sensitive about wanting not to just be general noise; if I'm going to say anything at all, I want it to be something meaningful, usually.

But I'm terrible at actually using favorites myself consistently, so I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I still value lots and lots and lots of comments made by people who I didn't think to click on at the time. I'm sorry I'm terrible at it.

Who has that formula on hand where it's like the square root of (∑i=1n[comments - favorites]^2) / posts. I keep that in a spreadsheet with a macro that tallies up my mefi stats, and consult it every time I need to figure out how much value I have as a community member compared to the rest of you scrubs. I've got a script so that if my value ever exceeds griphus's, my account automatically disables and i become a screeching phoenix ascending to the heavens in a white hot blaze, two feathery middle fingers pointed at the shitlords as I leave them behind. I figure that I can't be alone in approaching Metafilter that way either, and so I tend to believe they're a net positive for the site.

It's not about the number of favorite you have, it's all about your favorites per comment ratio.

I feel like there should be a user favorite difficulty factored in, like getting a favorite from someone who has only given a few ever should count more. Also a bonus when someone favorites only one comment in a thread, and it's yours (thus winning the thread). Who was that person who seemed to favorite everything a while back and routinely hit the favorite limit? Getting one of those is fun too, but not quite the same.

I think it would be neat if everyone got one and only one super-favorite. To give it again, you'd have to take it back.

OMG, yes! I totally use favorites as internet applause too and it makes it really hard to actually bookmark something. This is why we need an additional, auxiliary system of favorites. I propose we call them "favourites" I just made that term up.

And that way, when you get a "favourite", you know that someone found your comment really especially useful and they're going to go back to it and you can feel even better about yourself as an Extra Special Person and the users with the most "favourites" will be the true winners of Metafilter.

zarq: The infodumpster will allow you to see who favorites your posts and comments the most.

I always forget about the infodumpster, it's like it slides straight out of my brainbox the moment someone mentions it/demonstrates something clever with it. That comments link is super handy though, I'm slightly chuffed about my long tail of one-time favourites (granted, by definition everyone's probably got one ).

The other thing that's great about the infodumpster is the "not affiliated with MetaFilter" reminder at the bottom of the page. You're vomiting your opinions and favbookmarks onto the open internet pole, not into your own personal monkeysphere. Never hurts to be reminded.

I am less concerned if people fight all day today!

If a new person ever asks what the retired tag means, we should just point them to this comment.

I mean, I was a little concerned...

I used to be concerned that I give more favorites than I receive, but y'all write far more posts/comments/answers than I do. There are over 200 comments in this thread alone, and now I have only one. Of course I have a favorite deficit; there are tens of thousands of you writing things for me to favorite!

I think the 'Note: Everyone needs a hug.' has been there for years and years but I can't be certain because I haven't been here for years and years.
But, just like me, it's not new. That's for sure.

Depends on your perspective, I guess. It still seems at least new-ish to me. At least, I still notice it every time, perhaps because it's such a MeFi thing that it always brings a tiny smile to my shrivelled black heart.

I think I'm doing favourites wrong, having received about three times as many as I give. I think I'm miserly with them because I'm nervous about adding favourites in case a better comment comes along and I feel the need to make that one my favourite but I'd have to take one away for that to work and that's just mean. Life must be so much easier for people who use them as bookmarks.

You're optimizing for correctness, when you could be optimizing for happiness.

That's okay, dg. I favorite enough for both of us. ;)

Lots of times in a thread, if I say something and then someone else later disagrees with me, I will favorite their disagreeing comment as if to say, "No hard feelings! I still like you! Please still like me!"

And I also found this comment in my favorites and that has made my day.

I favorite enough for both of us. ;)

You are a veritable cornucopia, sir.

Now that the ship of this thread has reached still wind, a report of my findings of favouriting every comment:

1. When I started favouriting every comment in this thread, I plussed many times quickly and then thought - "hang on, what if someone says something utterly terrible - some vile hated?" (Not that I thought it terribly likely). So I started reading every comment (either before or after favouriting it). I don't always or often read every comment in a thread, but now I was reading them all, and specifically looking for something I liked; reading everything in the best possible light, so to speak. And it was really easy to find something I liked in every comment, when I looked for it - some thought, some expression, some tale or joke or piece of wit (e.g., I loved this). I should read more threads in this mood, thought I.

2. Then I realised I was interacting (in a pretty facile way) with every single comment, stupidly worried to make sure that no-one was left without a plus. And that tiny sense of interacting with everyone was also really enjoyable; not only was I finding something likeable in every comment but I felt like I could also feed back to everyone (again, in a facile way): "hey, I liked what you said!" I felt like an "active listener" of all parts of the conversation, even though I wasn't adding any value to it at all.

3. Also, I found myself playing a private (or solipsistic?) game with the good leotrotsky - trying to get my favourite added on a new comment first! Totally silly and meaningless, but I realised that it was a way of interacting with a thread and another user that I had literally never done before in all my years on MeFi. And it was fun, even if I was the only one who noticed I was playing that dumb game.

Anyways - this is all indolent anecdote, not advice for living. Obviously, this thread wasn't on a controversial topic. And I was putting quark to bed while some of this was going on in its first day (singing songs, reading stories with him, etc), so I was in a good mood anyway. There is no moral to this report except that it made me think: I liked reading everything in this thread. I should give more favourites generally. Thanks, MeFites.

I came here to grouse about the quidnunc kid not favoriting my comment and then I realized I had not made one, just added this thread to Recent Activity manually.

Yeah, so different approach on my end. I just clicked the little plus sign.

It did bug me that I couldn't double favorite the 'deserving' comments. You know who you are. Instead, this was the Lake Wobegon of threads, where all comments are above average.

On reflection, it would trouble me when quidnunc beat me to favoriting comments. "How can he be spending so much time on this thread, for days at a time? Doesn't this guy have a life?" I'd think, without an ounce of self-reflection.

I am also unashamed that I favorited every one of my own comments in this thread*, even though it feels like cheating.

* even this one!

Every once in a while my favorites and total-comments counts will both reach a nice, round number--or worse, a beautiful ratio--and I think, "Free at last! I can finally quit MetaFilter forever!" and then one of you bozos comes along and necro-favorites something I wrote six months ago and I'm stuck here for another two years.

I'm totally doing that to you now.

yep, just did.

RISE, NECRO-FAVORITES, RISE!

the horror. i knew i was dumb sixteen years ago, but i thought those comments were safely buried, lost in a previous century, never to trouble the world again...can't look away, can't stop reading...why have you done this, why, why?

Oh I skimmed too fast. I thought you'd set up a way to request or self change the display name favorites much like we can fiddle with other look and geeky feely things.

I was going to rename my view from "favorites" to "kittens". Then I'd have nearly 9,000 kittens and recieved 3.5k kittens from others.

(And then I can rename BEST ANSWER something like BEST FART)
