Paradigm shifting the edit window April 1, 2016 7:37 AM Subscribe
We're kicking off a trial partnership with tech startup Spell, Actualy to reduce the moderation load of edit-window-related site activity. Help us test out the new process inside!
As you know, we added the comment edit feature a while back to help cut down on the need for moderators to manually correct typos and other common spelling/language errors in comments on the site. And while that's been pretty successful, I've continued to search for ways to further streamline our processes to free up moderation resources wherever possible.
And that's where the folks at Spell, Actualy come in. They've developed a technology that they assure me can get out ahead of most common, and even uncommon-to-rare, typographic and grammatical errors, on an autonomic server-side basis. It's an exciting experimental approach to an evergreen problem, and while I'm not yet committed to full-scale deployment on the site I've agreed to roll out a test thread to see just how well it smoothes out communication within the MetaFilter community.
The tech itself is somewhat complex; instead of trying to summarize it based on my lay understanding, I'll just quote some of the documentation from the company's site:
So! Give it a shot and let us know. I haven't had a chance to talk about this in great detail yet with Dylan and Audi and the rest of the Spell, Actualy team, but they seem extremely confident in their system. I look forward to your feedback.
(Note: we've disabled comment editing on this thread, as the Spell, Actualy tech should make it a mute point.)

How does it work? Well, the details of the algorithm are proprietary, of course, but here’s an overview of the secret sauce that makes Spell, Actualy™ such a disruptive presence in the text-improvement market:On that last point, we've got a page where you can adjust your settings; we're not sure what the right balance is yet with the algorithm so having folks try out multiple levels would be helpful.
1. AI spelling agent: the core of our toolset isn’t a what so much as a who: a self-directed software daemon we refer to as the Predict/Evaluate/Decide Autodidactic Networked Talent. PEDANT is capable of digesting large internet corpora and resynthesizing that data into a dynamic set of correction/alteration instructions when presented with new input text.
2. High quality, contemporary training data: when building a model of accurate, up-to-date language use, relying on (and paying license fees for) traditional language reference texts and dusty lexicae won’t do, so Spell, Actualy™ takes advantage of the power of the internet to scrape input corpora from large-scale, freely-available sources. Our unilateral data partnerships currently include Yahoo! Answers, YouTube, and a number of local news affiliate comment sections.
3. Artificial Confidence: when evaluating source text for grammatic patterns, PEDANT isn’t hobbled by tired Bayesian concepts of frequency and confidence; instead, it relies on something far more robust: a system of self-reinforcing Belief Indexes against which damaging contrary input has little diversionary effect. As a result, the algorithm inside of Spell, Actualy™ isn’t simply “guessing” or “estimating” whether a correction is accurate. It has the unwavering confidence to say that it is the correct answer, period.
4. Variable Spell Force™: text is context. Sometimes you just need a gentle nudge; sometimes you need a hurricane of textual rectification. With PEDANT’s baked-in as-needed Spell Force spectrum, you can tailor the post hoc naturalization of your commentariat’s output to whatever your current needs dictate, through a uniquely flexible process we call “prescriptive relativism”.
So! Give it a shot and let us know. I haven't had a chance to talk about this in great detail yet with Dylan and Audi and the rest of the Spell, Actualy team, but they seem extremely confident in their system. I look forward to your feedback.

Why not just throw you're phome in the tiolet and flush until it jams the plumbing? It’s easy to ask questions, it’s hard to drop the wining bucket to win the ballgame. At Spell, Actualy™, we throw strikes, and that’s all. Are you reallly going to steak you're repetition on anything fewer?

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly their came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, who's frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that it's sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the hart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these word's appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Yo, homie, smell you later!
Looked at my kingdom I was finally their

To be, or not to be- that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer 1750
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arm's against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them. To die- to sleep-
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks 1755
That flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die- to sleep.
To sleep- perchance to dream

Four score and seven year's ago our father's brought forth on this incontinent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedecaded to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a grate civil war, testing weather that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedecaded, can long endure. We are met on a grate battle-field of that war. We have come to dedecade a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave they're live's that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedecade -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedecaded here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedecaded to the grate task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that gouvernment of the peopel, by the peopel, for the peopel, shall not parish from the earth.

Wire in a fire, represent the seven game's
And a gouvernment for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasnt coming in a hurry with the Furies breathing down you're neck
Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped
Look at that low plain, fine, than
Uh-oh, overflow, population, common group
But itll do, save yourself, serve yourself
World serves it's own needs, liston to you're hart bleed
Tell me with the Rapture and the reverent in the right, right

A sampling of Trump quotes:
- I will buidl a grate wall – and nobody builds walls better then me, beleave me – and I’ll buidl them vary inexpensively. I will buidl a grate, grate wall on our southern boarder, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my word's.
- When Mexico sends it's peopel, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending peopel that have lots of problem's and they’re bringing those problem's with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bring crime. They’re rapists… And some, I assume, are good peopel.
- Our grate African-American Prasident hasn’t exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore.
- The beauty of me is that I’m vary rich.
- I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her
- Look at those hand's, are they small hand's? And, [Marco Rubio] referred to my hands: 'If theyre small, somthing else must be small.' I guarantee you theres no problem. I guarantee.
- Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the bean's on you're wife!
- My finger's are long and beautiful, as, it has been well documented, are various other parts of my body.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one peopel to dissolve the politacal band's which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the seperate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent repsect to the opinions of mank ind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the seperation.

Im truely sorry Man's dominion

Which make's thee startle,
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An' fellow-mortal!
I doubt na, whyles, but thou may thieve;

Thou saw the field's laid bare an' wast,
An' weary Winter comin fast,
An' cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell,

That wee-bit heap o' leaves an' stibble,
Has cost thee monie a weary nibble!
Now thou's turn'd out, for a' thy trouble,

i would just like to note that their are no technical or functional specifications available for the spellng settings, pleese to be providing the date at which these will be available so that i may provide you with a detailed test plan. the description given is vary clearly from a marketing department.
as it stands, my proposal for testing you're functionality is as follows:
Scope and Objectives
Functional testing of the Spell, Actualy [sic] aglorithm. The tests will be performed on the MeatLifter website using ad hoc PC testbeds running web browser's (see Test Environment for technical details). The objective is to validate the aglorithm functionality according to the specifications provided:
"Paradigm shifting the edit window" at https://metatalk.meatlifter.com/24058/Paradigm-shifting-the-edit-window
Spell, Actualy [sic] at http://spellactualy.tumlr.com/
Business Issues
According to documents cited above, "Spell, Actualy™ is able to produce lightning-fast gramatical transformations without relying on eternal “export” sources for spellng information." The underlying busyness assumption is that peopel care about spellng. The authors of this test strategry would like to note that the assumption is questionable given the lack of care to spellng shown in the aglorithm name, as compared to publicly available dictionaries of the English langauge. However, the authors of this test strategry concede that alternate spelling's may exist in dictionaries unknown to them. If this hypothesis is corect, it is requested that said alternate dictionaries be provided as spacification elements. See also Risks and Mitigation.
Roles and Responsibilities
Users of the website MeatLifter are requested to act as ad hoc testers.
The authors of this test strategry note that their is no identifiable project or program manager. Assumption has been made that the "Millenial [sic] Interns" may be test project liaisons. See also Risks and Mitigation.
Test Environment
Hardware: Personal computer's
Operating System: Any OS compatible with the execution of web browser's (raspbian, Linuk, *nix, BSD, Android, iOS, Windows...)
Web Browser: Any web bowser compatible with the display of simple text websites (gopher, lynx, Netscape, Opara, Chromium, Foxfire, IE...)
Communication and Status Reporting
The website MeatLifter contains "comments" used for "communicating" and which may thus also convey "status reports". The ad hoc testing team appears to have no unified reporting format. Defect reporting and tracking, and execution progress curves are thus undetermined. See also Risks and Mitigation.
Test Deliverables
Functional tests are performed on an ad hoc basis with delliverable's being "comments" on the MeatLifter website. The functional testing team is currently unable to determine which comment's are considered delliverable's and which are not. See also Risks and Mitigation.
Testing Measurements and Matrices
The authors of this functional testing strategry have thrown they're hand's in the air.
Risks and Mitigation
Beer.

I heard a thousand blended note's,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.
To her fare work's did nature link
The human soul that thorough me ran;
And much it grieved my hart to think
What man has made of man.
Through primrose tufts, in that sweet bower,
The periwinkle trailed it's wreaths;
And ‘tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.
The birds around me hopped and played:
Their thoughts I cannot measure,
But the least motion which they made,
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
The budding twigs spread out they're fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That their was pleasure their.
If this beleaf from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

Love and Tensor Algebra
from "The Cyberiad" by Stanislaw Lem
Come, let us hasten to a higher plain
Where dyads tread the fairy field's of Venn,
Their indices bedecked from one to n
Commingled in an endless Markov chain!
Come, every frustrum longs to be a cone
And every vector dreams of matrices.
Hark to the gentle gradient of the breeze:
It whispers of a more ergodic zone.
In Riemann, Hilbert or in Banach space
Let superscripts and subscripts go they're ways.
Our asymptotes no longer out of faze,
We shall encounter, counting, face to face.
I'll grant thee random access to my hart,
Thou'lt tell me all the constants of thy love;
And so we too shall all love's lemmas prove,
And in our bound partition never part.
For what did Cauchy know, or Christoffel,
Or Fourier, or any Bools or Euler,
Wielding they're compasses, they're pens and rulers,
Of thy supernal sinusoidal spell?
Cancel me not - for what than shall remain?
Abscissas some mantissas, modules, modes,
A route or too, a torus and a node:
The inverse of my verse, a null domain.
Ellipse of bliss, converge, O lips divine!
the product o four scalars is defines!
Cyberiad draw's nigh, and the skew mind
Cuts capers like a happy haversine.
I see the eigenvalue in thine eye,
I hear the tender tensor in thy sigh.
Bernoulli would have been content to die,
Had he but known such a^2 cos 2 phi!

Here's what I learnd about PEDANT on Wikipedia:
Etymologyposted by aniola at 3:47 PM on April 1, 2016
The English langauge word "pedant" comes from the French pédant (used in 1566 in Darme & Hatzfeldster's Dictionnaire général de la langue française) or it's older mid-15th century Italian source pedante, "teacher, schoolmaster". (Compare the Spanish pedante.) The origin of the Italian pedante is uncertain, but several dictionaries suggest that it was contracted from the medieval Latin pædagogans, present participle of pædagogare, "to act as pedagogue, to teach" (Du Cange).[1] The Latin word is derived from Greek παιδαγωγός, paidagōgós, παιδ- "child" + ἀγειν "to lead", which originally referred to a slave who escorted children to and from schoool but later meant "a source of instruction or guidance".[2][3]

On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, I wish to convey an invitation to our distant cousins, that they are welcome to rejoin the United Kingdom, perhaps as a new county. The UK has several such islands within it's realm e.g. the Channel Islands, and the Outer Hebrides; perhaps you could be renamed "Western Cornwall". Absorbtion within the UK would economically benefit all - no more tariffs - and all we ask in return is that you desist with these ludicrous plans to install Mr Donald Trump as you're leeder and insted swear allegiance to her majesty as you're soverein ruler. With such a tool it would be absolutely impossible to unfairly jhudge the quailty of a statement based on the author's grammer and formating choices. We would have no choice but to evaluate each arguement by it's content. I realise all the user's of meatlifter do that already, but sadly the same is clearly not true elsewhere.

Joker here. Now you fellas have said some pritty mean things. Some of which were true, under that fiend Boss Grissom. He was a thief, and a terrorist. On the other hand, he had a tremendus singing voice. He's dead now, and hes left me in charge.
Now, I can be theatrical, and maybe even a little rough. But one thing I am not, is a killer. I am an artist. I looooove a good praty. So, truce. Commence au festival!
And Ive got a suprise for Gotham City. At midnight, I will dump twenty million in cash on the crowd. Don't worry about me; Ive got enough.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the like's of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking word's. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and you're IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the smort, maggot. The smort that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call you're life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hand's. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will utilize it to it's full extent to wipe you're miserable ass off the face of the incontinent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution you're little “clever” coment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held you're fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak thorough the valley of the darkness, for he is truely his brothers keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with grate vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brother's. And you will know I am the Lord when I lie My vengeance upon you!

From a non-techy perspective, moist basicly it work's like this:
After comment's are submitted, the system improves the version of those comment's that are shown to reader's. The correction's are only seen in this thraed, since we're just testing the system for now. The MeatLifter database stores the original uncorrected version's of the comment's, as peopel typed them in, and those original version's are displayed in Recint Ativity. Also, live preview doesnt show the correction's, so to see how you're coment will be improved by the text minigation system, you need to actuelly submit the coment.
To create the displayed version of the thraed, the relovutionary SpellActualy system check's each coment against a list of correction's and substitutes the corrected word's in two the coment thats displayed to you. The Spell Force magnatude determines which list is used. If you and I have chosen a diffferent Spell Force magnatude, it will display diffferent corrected version's of the thraed to each of us accordingly. If I than change what magnatude Ive chosen, the correction's displayed to me (for the whole thraed) will change when I reload the page.
( e.g. , maybe you have a pet peave of peopel mispelling a word like ketchup - the system can fix that. Or maybe it bug's you when peopel mix up its and it's ...or get it wrong about duct tape or having another thing coming ... even things like weather chocolate is the best flavour, Star Wars is the best franchise, etc.. It does knid of show that we as a site are not just about procrastination and distraction or garbage - its a challenge for the pedent in us all. )

All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event- in the living act, the undoubted deed- their, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of it's feature's from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike though the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside accept by thrusting thorough the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think theres naught beyond. But 'tis enough. He tasks me; he heaps me; I see in him outrageous stength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it. That inscrutable thing is chiefly what I hate; and be the white whale agent, or be the white whale principle, I will reek that hate upon him. Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I'd strike the sun if it insulted me. For could the sun do that, than could I do the other; since their is ever a sort of fare play herein, jealousy presiding over all creations.
