Mefiquote - help! February 11, 2016 10:26 AM   Subscribe

Need some help getting Mefiquote script running again.

I recently had to move to a new PC and to reinstall everything. On the old PC, the (great) Mefiquote script worked fine. On the new one it doesn't - when Quote is clicked, the page moves down to the Comment box as normal, but then the box remains blank. Any thoughts as to what to do?

* Win7, Firefox 44 (same as before)
* Using the fixed version of the script (also same as before)
* Behavior is the same on all subsites, and whether attempting to quote the FPP or a comment.
* My other MeFi scripts (MeFi Navigator, Howls of Outrage, Mondo Image, Metafilter Scroll Tag) seem to be working fine.

Fully understood scripts are not MF supported; this is a request to the crowd. I'm sure there's some obvious setting I have wrong, but not sure what?

Having dealt with this recently, are you using the classic style or the modern style?

The updated script you linked doesn't work on the classic style. Here's a copy that works on classic. To install, click on the "Raw" button in the upper right hand corner just above the text.

That's it, thank you!

I am now commandeering this thread to once again call for a semi-official repository of known-good MeFi scripts.

Sorry Rock Steady, I don't think that's in the cards. Some of the scripts that people want to use are things that MetaFilter doesn't want to encourage. Setting up an official spot for them would look like an endorsement.

There is a page with Grasemonkey Scripts & Plugins at the Wiki. MetaFilter doesn't run the wiki but we do link to it in quite a few places. I think that could be considered a semi-official repository. I'm not sure how actively it's maintained, but it's a space people could work on.

This Mefi Quoting bookmarklet from 2008 doesn't require Greasemonkey and should work with both the classic and new themes, though I haven't tested your particular Win7, Firefox 44 setup. Just highlight the text to be quoted and then click the bookmarklet.

That's just it, we don't want to be in the script-judging business.

If you want script-judging, you should be over here.

A Mefite wrote Make Link for Firefox years ago. It still works wonderfully.

I edited the mefiquote script to work on the modern theme:

* Create a new greasemonkey/tampermonkey script
* Paste the contents of this into it
* Save it

This works for me with tampermonkey in chrome. It should work with greasemonkey in firefox, etc.

Well, that was a serious reading comprehension failure on my part.
