MeFites residing with other MeFites: an airbnb profile option? October 7, 2015 8:20 AM Subscribe
Good afternoon. One has a request for the consideration of MetaFilter. Could one's airbnb profile be added as an option on one's MetaFilter profile page?
One is unsure of how many other MeFites are also guesting, and/or hosting, on the Internet airbnb service.
This particular service is the source of frequent questions on AskMeFi so am guessing there is some use, if not interest. Personally, if there was a choice between several similar airbnb places in the same location, I would be more inclined to see such an abode was hosted by a MeFite and select that particular residence. It feels like an extra level of validation, especially as MeFites are overwhelmingly considerate, fair and most splendid people.
One is aware that there is already an airbnb MetaFilter group, arising from this particular Talk.
In addition, with many people operating airbnb as an additional or top-up source of income to directly help pay the bills/loans/butler wages/rent/mortgage, it feels more appropriate for my purse of guineas to be opened in that direction rather than that of a multinational chain of inns, or similar.

It would be nice if there was more of a public notice when more Also On sites are added. Updating the wiki is fine, but plenty of people aren't watching that page…

after looking at the wiki page, it seems like "not a social network" is a common reason for things not to be included.

Also about the real question, I'm not sure how useful this would actually be - if I'm going to a city, is there a way to search for users with AirBnB profiles in or near that city?

Manually, yep. In your profile, change your location to the destination you intend. Then browse the nearby MeFites that come up. There may be other ways.
Also useful for IRL meetups, if you need an overnight. Staying with a MeFite also probably means there's a transport, or companion, solution to attending said revelries.

So I can get a list of mefites, and then ... just click on each one of them until one shows up who is running an AirBnB? That's gotta be way less than one in 20 people doing that, right? Clicking through 20 or 30 of 50 profiles is only a valid approach for the most pathologically dedicated of users.

I'm not on airbnb, but if one Mefite was to wander all the way out to these parts I do have a couch and Mefites are generally good people so I would consider hosting one. But just one.

Does Airbnb have tags, or a way to search through listings? If so, people could also add a MetaFilter tag or work it in to the listing's text.

If you declare it so, then it is so. I've been at more than a few BBQs and pub gatherings where we've looked around and gone "umm there's 6 MeFites here, I guess it's a meetup".

I would consider hosting one. But just one.
At a time or like ever? Or maybe you have a specific mefite in mind? I might be overthinking this.

For what it's worth, I oppose this based on thinking airbnb as a company is a vampire that escalates involuntary displacement while shirking traditional hotel tax rules and other sound regulatory guidelines.

I'm late to this MeTa (having just today sent an email to the mods asking to add AirBnb as a profile option *grin*) – the MeFi group link returns a 404 for me, and there doesn't seem to be a way to search for groups... AirBnb are redoing the whole groups thing for this November. Is there a fresh link for the MeFi group that works?

airbnb is now an option in profiles. We also added Atlas Obscura, WikiData, Atavist, and Weather Underground personal weather stations today.
