What made you pay? (the study) September 14, 2015 2:46 AM   Subscribe

Deliberate Barriers to User Participation on MetaFilter (Pileggi, H., Morrison, B., Bruckman, A. 2014) is paper from the Georgia Institute of Technology that addresses the following research questions: Why do people pay $5 to join MetaFilter? How has the monetary barrier to site participation affected the MetaFilter community? The study was announced by the authors in this MetaTalk thread but the resulting paper does not seem to have been linked here.

That was way too many words about something simple.

I feel compelled to nitpick the second sentence "Metafilter has been in continuous operation since its founding in 1999" with some comment about the time Matt went on holiday.

russm: the time Matt went on holiday.

Do you mean the time when Paphnuty led the Cabal in an uprising against #1 and was erased from the Internet for his affront?

Interestingly, the third most popular reason to join was the“need to post.”

By inner cynic says that if that's your reason, you should have to pay $20 to join, SAIT.

I'm not an academic. In sentences like this, what do the question marks mean?

"It also functions as an online community according to the definitions outlined by [?] and [?]."

Tried Googling, but I received grammatical answers.

I guess that the [?] are citations that were lost during the conversion of the LaTeX file to PDF.

Interesting Figure 3. The linear growth in membership is like a rising tide instead of a mad rush you'd expect from a social media site.

I hear the real Haughey has been retired fifteen years and living like a king in Patagonia.

I don't think my experience is unique - I lurked for years, then a discussion came along on a subject I was passionate about, and I really wanted to join the discussion.

It's an interesting research area but as this paper demonstrates, what's needed is a strong theoretical basis. For example if the paper's conclusion is: "Only through understanding the possible triggers can we develop further research probes or in- terventions to explicitly recruit additional members", then I have to ask, Why? Is more of something better? A robust and "explicit" social theory is needed to formulate research methodology and interpret data, and I think papers like these could benefit by spending more on that.

Five dollars was a lot more practical than Matt rushing to your house to brow-beat you into not finishing the process of becoming a member.

has a mandatory one-week waiting period before new users are allowed to post

Does MeFi really have this? I found MeFi at around 2004, lurked forever, and this is the first time I've heard of this. Does it only refer to FPPs? Because I'm pretty sure I posted my first comment about two minutes after registering. (And it wasn't even deleted!)

I was lurking for a while and then one day a bunch of thuggish looking mods busted through my front door and they were all like "Nice stuff you got here. Shame if anything happened to it. Now be smart and sign up and give mathowie your five bucks, chump." and that was that.

Good article, but I wish they had made it clear that Matt will waive the $5.00 for those who can't afford it & send him e-mail requesting membership. For a premium, fee-for-entry web forum, MeFi has an unexpectedly large number of poor members, and even some homeless. The way Section RQ2 is written, it makes it sound like the only exceptions are famous people and the owner's personal contacts. That may lead to later researchers dismissing the paper's recommendations as only applicable to an affluent demographic.

In all seriousness, I recall the reason for the halt in signups and the restart with the $5 was combination of dealing with both server and moderation capacity. The other benefits of the $5 (SAIT) buy in came in by happy accident. The combo of the signups and ads helped Matt get the server space and hire real Mods, which let the site grow beyond Matt and occasional pb hacking. I don't even think jessamyn was a mod yet. Matt just needed some sort of throttle to new signups as the userids passed 15K.

I don't remember what the exact number was when he called the halt -- in the 13K range, IIRC. All us old timers got in for free. (neener.) But now we're all old, so you can mock us. And, of course, we had to pay for our sock puppets, same as you. Well, our *new* sock puppets.

Damn, I just looked at that "Joined" date on the profile. It's coming on 14 years here.

WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY LIFE?

There was a time that a limited number (15?) of free memberships were made available every day and if you were online, say, just after midnight you could score a free membership (so you know what you can do with your neener). Sign me: "16K And Didn't Pay"

I had been lurking for a year or so and was just about to join when sign ups were shut down (summer of 2001). I somehow discovered memberships were still available as part of the process for signing up for the 5k coding contest and I got in by that route despite not actually submitting an entry to the contest. So not only did I not pay, but I got in under false pretenses. Please don't kick me out.
