Planning a MetaFilter survey September 3, 2015 11:13 AM   Subscribe

Inspired by this post about the XKCD Survey and this comment by The Underwear Monster, I thought it might be fun to do a Big MeFi Survey along the same lines - mostly goofy questions that we can sic our local datawranglers on and see what fun, weird, fascinating things drop out.

I've started putting it together already. I'm envisioning maybe 5-10 basic demographic type questions (age, education, nationality, stuff like that), maybe 10-15 questions about MeFi (signup date, do you read logged in or logged out, favorite subsite, etc) and then a bunch of random questions that I'd like you all to help with. You can leave your question ideas here in the thread, or MeMail/email me. I won't promise that I'll include all your suggestions, but I'm open to any and all ideas. If you'd like to help organize and assemble the survey (I'm using Google Forms) let me know.

A couple of caveats:
1. The survey will be anonymous and all questions will be optional, but I'm planning to make the data available to any MeFites that think they can do something fun with it, and I suppose it would be possible to deduce identities by correlating your demographic/MeFi answers with Infodumpster data, MeFi scraped data, or whatever. If that is a concern, you can leave questions blank or not complete the survey.

2. The questions will be silly and frivolous, but I think the fun is to be had in manipulating the data, not in giving clever but useless answers. If you are inclined to answer HURF DURF SURVEY EATER to every question, I beg you to reconsider.

3. There is no MeFi Human Research IRB as far as I know, and I am not a professional surveyer (or surveyor for that matter). If you are a professional at this and have suggestions about how to make the survey more fun and entertaining, I would love to hear them. This survey is intended for entertainment purposes only. This survey is not an official product of MetaFilter Industries or any of its affiliates. Consult your doctor if your survey lasts four hours or longer.

I plan to close question suggestions sometime on Friday, Sept 11th and I'll make a new MeTa to announce the opening of the survey on or about Monday the 14th.

Ooh, very fun! I like this idea.

With the help of the moderators, I was able to do two large-scale surveys (2010, 2012) for my PhD dissertation about how people from MetaFilter pronounce 'MeFi' (and why that matters, other than being fun to argue about online and otherwheres). I learned a LOT from the process — I'm sure that even if I did 20 more surveys I'd still find countless flaws with my methodology and its implementation.

Rock Steady, if you'd like to chat about this, I'd be happy to email/skype/whatever with you. There were quite a few things I found that helped or hindered response, data processing, validity, etc. I know this isn't for scientific research purposes, so by no means do I want to suck the fun out of it, but if there's any insight I can lend to help make things easier or more fair, I'm happy to discuss.

If anybody is interested in reading about that process, warts and all, the Methodology and Conclusion chapters of the dissertation go into some of the issues in great detail. That said, I'm still discovering some more regrets problems horrifyingly embarrassing mistakes areas for future research, so as lengthy as that document is, it by no means covers all the bases. :/

My little sister tried to stand once. She made an announcement with a smile on her face. I stopped brushing my teeth and told her that was not a good idea but she did it anyway and cried as it just went all over her legs. I wonder how common that is?

I went to a summer camp when I was eight and there were arachnids all over the walls behind the toilets and I was not going to sit down and have my back to that. I held it for days until it released itself. One solid ball that I threw into the woods. I didn't wash my hands. And that has nothing to with my username.

Thanks for making me remember something to tell at the weekly "Stupid Stories About Your Childhood" session with my son on Friday.

Hey, what are some inclusive, respectful ways to ask about things like sex, gender identity and sexual orientation that are also number crunchable? Obviously we don't need to know those things (all questions will be optional), and a open text box would probably be the best way, but it doesn't lend itself to sorting. Are there best practices in this area?
posted by Rock Steady at 2:10 PM on September 3, 2015 [1 favorite]

Well, there is the Kinsey Scale, and you could do similar scales for 'level of sex drive': 0 = Ace 5 = A threat to anyone within 5 feet; 'how often have you felt you were Born in the Wrong Body': 0 = never 5 = so much I had it changed (although that could apply to other Body Issues); and also 'how many sexual partners have you had in an average year' (to have something you can put a 999 maximum on - also note that if you are ambidextrous, it counts as 2)

Okay, that was less respectful than it was entertaining.

I think collecting serious demographic data on people's real-world identity, sexuality, and so on, is a kind of separate thing from the "fun silly questions" part, and deserves some careful thought. In particular how to be sure people understand the risk that their real info would get outed as being connected to them. That's the only part of this that gives me some pause, how the confidentiality or not of that info is handled.

In my first survey (2010), I had a gender question that had four possible answers: Male, Female, Transgender, Other [fill-in]. It was a disaster, for a whole bunch of reasons. I wish I could go back and change that — I have such regret.

In my 2012 survey, I had a free-form fill-in for the gender question. I had ~1500 surveys, and 370+ unique responses (once I normalized the data, by hand) — that is, over 370 distinct ways that people described their gender identity. Many of these were not even gender identities per se, including but not limited to sexual orientations, attitudes, preferences, gender presentations, medical descriptions. Normalizing the data was hard, and took weeks, but was totally worth it. However, I had some real difficulty in describing these categories in later write-ups. For statistical data analysis, I went with three categories: Male, Female, and a term which I now understand is not appropriate to use and so I won't repeat it here. I wish I could go back and change that — I have such regret.

I would totally recommend doing the free-form fill-in for questions relating to gender, and really anything that is part of one's self-definition; don't force people to put themselves into potentially ill-fitting boxes, no matter how many of them you provide. I would also be careful about how you represent categories after you normalize the data — what you call things really matters to people, and for good reasons. You won't be able to please everybody, but if you can demonstrate that you've given thought to the matter, then that and good faith intentions can go a long way.

Also, some text about why you're asking these personal questions, and a reminder that this part is optional is really important. Maybe even an option to leave a meta comment about how respondents feel about sharing this personal info — that could be really useful toward understanding responses better. Qualitative data are always tricky, but the more info you have to work with, the better equipped you'll be about how to sort/group/normalize/interpret the responses.

Lastly, where you place the personal data questions in the survey can have a positive or negative impact on response rate and openness. There are differing opinions on this, but I found that with MetaFilter at least, it made better sense to me to put the personal questions toward the end of the survey. This I felt gave a positive impression about what was most important to me (pronunciation, and how people felt/thought about it), and was less intrusive overall. Also, once people have invested in other questions and the survey in general, it's easy to finish up with potentially easier questions, and people may be more amenable to sharing at that point.
posted by iamkimiam at 2:35 PM on September 3, 2015 [8 favorites]

argh, one more thing (sorry, I keep thinking of stuff!) … be careful to clarify what you mean when you ask somewhat similar personal identity questions. For example, I asked about 'nationality' and 'ethnicity' on my 2012 survey, both of which were free-form fill-in questions. The responses were super duper interesting, but totally unusable for any sort of quantitative analysis. People from different places, backgrounds, etc. have extremely different understandings of what those terms mean, and then on top of that, answers can be incredibly ambiguous and mutable (same is true with gender questions). Also, the responses demonstrated that many people either find the terms 'ethnicity' and 'nationality' interchangeable, inextricably tied, having swapped meanings, or other interpretations.

For the nationality question, knowing what I know now, I would have been much better off with asking something like, "If you have or would have a current passport, what is or would be the issuing country?" Even that is rife with some problems and doesn't cover 'nationality' completely, but it at least is an agreed-upon metric. Just something to think about.

You can drive yourself crazy worrying about this stuff (ask me how I know), but again, if you can put a little bit of thought into it, you can save yourself some frustration down the road. It still won't be perfect, but it'll be closer to it. :)

When you visualize the plate of beans,

You know, I think that is actually an interesting question. Because I've never really liked beans, ever, in my life. And when I think of a plate of beans, my immediate vision is one dredged up from my childhood:

A cheap red plastic plate covered in an ocean of reddish-brown sauce with a bunch of little islands and shoals of gag-inducing, mushy, disgusting baked beans.

You see, when I was a kid, whenever we went on holidays to the small property we had in the mountains, franks and beans would be the dinner served when we got there. I hated those beans; mushy and slimy and gross. And so I would pick away at it, eating the franks, but avoiding the beans, until I had a plate full of beans in that brownish sauce, and I'm staring at it glumly trying to figure out how to get away from the table...

So while in the Metafilter context I understand the phrase as a way of expressing a tendency to over-analyze something simple and can laugh about it, it's also got an emotional overlay of being excited to be on holidays and tired from being in the car all day and dreading the parental approbation that is moments away and having to deal with several mouthfuls of food that I just found disgusting (it's a texture thing, I figured out when I got older) and regret that I didn't try to alternate some bites of beans with those franks so I wasn't facing an unremitting plate full of them...

Over my time here, I've found that in the plate of beans concept, I can find a lot of things to analyze and think about because of the memories that image stirs up. I can overthink that plate of beans. I have baggage about bean-plating.

So what I'm trying to say is that maybe it should be like an essay question, rather than multiple choice?

Less Wrong's 2014 survey got 1,503 people to measure their 2D:4D digit ratios (index to ring finger, from the tip to the bottom crease) and found "a 0.144 correlation between right-handed digit ratio and [a 1 to 5 approval rating of] feminism, p < 0.01, and an 0.112 correlation between left-handed digit ratio and feminism, p < 0.05." In the interests of reproducing scientific studies, I'd like to see MetaFilter try the same thing. It would be an outlier among frivolous questions, though, so if people aren't likely to answer correctly then it's not worthwhile.

Have you ever found yourself obsessing over not simply the number of favorites you have, but the ratio of posts and comments you've made (each assigned a respective weight) to the number of favorites you've received?

Yes. The average (among users with at least one favorited post or comment) turns out to be roughly 4.5, as of the August 21 infodump. (Depending on how outliers are filtered, I got values as low as 3.5 too.) That was weighting posts and comments equally, so go ahead and try a more nuanced method for assigning everyone a quality index (to be shown on their profiles in bright red orange).

Speaking of questions like sex, ethnicity, or gender, where a free fill-in is the only way to get truly accurate results: I would still recommend having the most common options as radio-button choices, with the fill-in for "Other." This makes it easier to normalize the data—no need to consolidate "Male", "male", "M", and "XY"—and also makes it easier for ~80–90% of people to give a simple and accurate answer while allowing as much precision as desired by anyone else. Like, if someone is curious what percent of users are women, it would be nice to have that figure readily available, instead of having to manually classify everyone's nuanced personal identities into broad census-type categories. (If the survey is all about having fun, not gathering census data, then disregard everything I said. I just think that a userbase which appreciates the infodump would also like analyzable survey results.)

Similar advice probably also applies to ethnicity, psychological data, and other personal information.

Yeah, I think I will probably leave most of the tricky demographic questions off, at least for this go around. Maybe if we do it again in the future someone with a little more knowledge about this sort of stuff can devise some well-crafted questions to get at things like gender identity and ethnicity, but I just don't have the expertise to do it. More "What color is The Dress?" and less "Where are you on the Kinsey scale?" is where I'm aiming.

It would be super awesome if any question that's pop culture or US-centric at least had a "this isn't something I know about" or "this isn't relevant to where I live" option - looking at a some of the questions suggested above, if there wasn't an option like that I'd either be forced to pick a meaningless answer or skip the question. It would also be awesome if a lot of the questions were location/culture-neutral - asking about aspects of human experience that most people in most places will have a take on. So more "can you read in a moving car?" and less speculation on the origin of whoopie pies.

The timezone difference and the fact that I'm not super engaged with a lot of aspects of contemporary US pop culture already makes me feel isolated, to an extent, from some of the content and the interactions across the site - having that not be an intrinsic feature of this survey would be excellent.

I look forward to wrangling data. I will produce many graphs. MANY!

I'd like to suggest a good mix of discrete (choose one) options, choose many options, enter a number options and free form entry options.
This allows for the greater amount of graphs to be drawn.

I'd like to encourage location/culture neutral questions (especially trying to avoid US-centricity)

I like the "Name the first 5 non-mod usernames that come to mind" question, that seems fun.

Name your favourite batman actor is a very good question.

5. What is the furthest you have ever travelled (e.g. miles, days, air flights) solely or mainly to obtain a particular cheese?
6. Have you ever asked "What cheeses will be available?" or similar to decide whether to attend a wedding, funeral, christening or other human milestone event?
7. List as many non-edible uses of cheese as you can think of.
8. Has an entire shelf of your fridge ever been full but, on inspection, only consisted of cheeses?

Everyone of these should have a radio button at the end of the questions "I would fight with someone about this if they answered wrong"

Would the 100% positive response rate on that question really tell us all that much?

I would want to know about which subsites people tend to use + how often, what traditions they've engaged in (spousing, music swaps, making Metafilter: taglines out of found phrases, etc), their favorite types of posts, and then some basic universal demographic stuff like:

Do you have animals (cats, dogs, chickens, ferrets, lizards, goats, sheep, fish, hamsters, etc)
Do you live in an apartment, detatched house, semi-detached house or townhouse, yurt/tent, RV/portable house, couchsurfing, cave, on a pillar, etc.
What's the best thing you've learned from MeFi & associated sites.
Who is the most interesting person in the world?
Do you eat breakfast?
Where would you most like to travel to?
Are you a night owl/morning person/balanced sleep schedule type/whatever my kids force me into?
Do you read physical media, or do you do it mostly digitally?
Have you ever lived in a different country?
What candy is the best?

As much as some of the pop cultural stuff above has amused me, some of it I'd need a "Don't know, this is not my fandom" option on the list. And if I wasn't a pasty American (also a pastry-American), I suspect I'd want a Don't know, not my culture/nationality/etc. option on a pickem list.

Yeah, this is a really funny one. I also have a very clear picture in my head (large amount of bog standard beans plopped unceremoniously on a blue plate) and it never occured to me that a plate of beans would look different to anyone else. Boy, there are a lot of questions y'all. Couple things:

1. Is there a good way to ask about what languages people speak (and how well they speak them) other than just having an open text field? I'm limited to the standard Google Forms input methods, which are not conducive to that question, as far as I can figure it. Having a checkbox list of all human languages seems excessive, but limiting it artificially seems too constraining. Ideas?

2. I love to have more "Divisive Food Preference" questions, especially non-US-centric ones.

3. I'm mostly staying away from the pop-culture questions. Someone could probably do a whole survey on just that.

"Are you now or have you ever been..."
It may fall into the TMI category as much as a sex question, but an open multi-box question allowing you to list all the Political Parties and Major Political Organizations (remember when Move On was semi-significant? So, because I grew up in a college town that had an artfair with about 100,000 tourists, when I was a kid I used to go volunteer with a local dadaist organization that gave out surveys, and now I'm curious to see if I can find some. If I recall correctly, most of them were garden-path sentences. But the XKCD really reminded me of it.

The other thing I'll say is that being a census taker in 2000 was still the best job I've ever had, to the extent that this survey makes me curious about whether there are career paths for folks who just want to do field interviews with strangers.

Fresh water from the tap, or old water that's been sitting around the house in a glass? I just saw this today -- yet another aspect of human existence where I had no idea there was more than one way of doing things, yet AskMe tells me that there is.

(I like fresh water but will take a swig of old water if I need to swallow a pill or something. I thought that was me being weird, but some people prefer old water!)

1. It's your birthday. Someone gives you a calfskin wallet. How do you react?
2. You've got a little boy. He shows you his butterfly collection plus the killing jar. What do you do?
3. You're watching television. Suddenly you realize there's a wasp crawling on your arm. How would you react?
4. You're in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, it's crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back, Gavin. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't, not without your help. But you're not helping. Why is that?
5. Describe in single words, only the good things that come into your mind. About your mother.
6. You're watching a stage play - a banquet is in progress. The guests are enjoying an appetizer of raw oysters. The entree consists of boiled dog stuffed with rice. The raw oysters are less acceptable to you than a dish of boiled dog.

That oughta do the trick.
