So... anyone interested in starting a Metafilter D&D campaign? August 11, 2015 7:54 PM   Subscribe

I hear tell that Roll20 makes it pretty easy to run campaigns online. I have basically no experience with D & D, but I keep running into people and podcasts that make it seem pretty fun, especially if you have a good sense of humor. Any nerds want to come help me figure it out? :D

I've been wanting to play a campaign for a while now, but I haven't been able to make a schedule work with anyone I know in my city. I figure the chances are better asking the fine people of the grey, plus I can hang out with all you fine people more in a social setting. Yes?

(I blame this IRL post. Also chat, which is full of hideous D&D enablers.)

I'm game, I think. I've been curious about D&D for years. I'm probably only free for the next couple weeks, though.

I did a Roll20 campaign last fall while playing Hackmaster on Sundays. It's a great system, and if you use character templates super easy to get up and running.

After playing Hackmaster, it did seem like the Roll20 campaign was a bit of a dungeon crawl. But it was still a lot of fun, and using the videocam feature, I got to play with Internet friends I had not met in person before, which was really neat.

I also have no prior experience, but I would be interested in this. It's always been something I've been curious about. And who better to learn with that other mefites?

I'm going to be on vacation with only intermittent internet access from 8/18 to 8/26, so I could do this if we start either before 8/18 or after 8/26.

(I'm in the US, Eastern timezone, fwiw,)

This is totally my jam.

I've got a fair bit of RPG experience both off and on-line - count me in as both a player and an advisory if you need one.
posted by mikurski at 12:53 AM on August 12, 2015

I'd definitely be interested in this, although my only experience is in a campaign that was deliberately being run as fairly rules-light, with occasional bending of the rules if the DM thought that what we were trying to do was particularly interesting or just funny. I'm happy to try a more serious style of play, but would need time to catch up.

Unfortunately I'm in GMT+1, which might make scheduling tricky.

I currently play in a Monsterhearts campaign over Google Hangouts, and it's pretty great.

Has anyone seen Storium?

It's like a narratively controlled role playing game with a very light game mechanic to allow for stories to develop.
If you're into DnD but need a more relaxed schedule and a more storytelling angle you might give it a look.

I'm not sure if you can view games without signing, but I'll link the two that I played below in case you can.
1) Deliberately Cliche Cyberpunk detective story
2) Bizarre lost in time and space story (which, for reasons to complicated to go into I started to play an enormously transparent rip off of Daniel Jackson from stargate, and spent far too long researching Ancient Mesopotamia)

Oh hey, all the interest! This sounds awesome.

I was thinking something like a biweekly or monthly schedule to allow for people who have stuff going on that might make it hard to be around for a weekly thing, but if there's a possibility to set up a weekly game that allows for people dropping in and out sometimes that would also be good--experienced players, is that a thing we could do? I'll put up a Doodle poll as soon as we have some consensus on how frequently to meet.

I'm not wedded to D&D--it's the tabletop role-playing thing I think would be fun! I just don't have enough experience to pick another good system, but would be happy to try something different if someone who does have a little more experience would like to give it a whirl.

Hi, I have logged over 500 (yikes!) hours specifically on Roll20 as both a player and DM. While I haven't played in about a year, I would be willing to dust off my account and run some intro sessions as DM for people who are interested in dipping their toes in the water.

I am the most experienced with the Pathfinder system and have a number of one off scenarios that could work as either a one-time session, or strung together.

I also would be willing to set up the 5th edition D&D "beginner's box" adventure in Roll20. I own the material, I just need to scan it in and set it up. I believe that you can download these rules for free.

The best time for me to do this is between 8/29 and 9/8.

I would also be willing to commit to a biweekly game as a DM or player for a longer campaign.

Has anyone seen Storium?

I did storium for a while, but all three of my games ended up dying (that was about a year ago, but and I think they've updated to mechanics since then). I would totally be up for a storium game with mefites, though.

Was it ever fully released? I backed the kickstarter way back when, but thought it was still in pre-release stage.

In! Yes! I'm in the US, EST. I could probably swing twice-monthly. Weekly would be an option if it was drop-in or shorter than 2 hours. Also if NYC area MeFites want to occasionally make this an in-person remote game, I'm down.

I would be up for giving this a shot, not least because my ongoing tabletop fantasy game has five mefites, three of whom will be no longer be local by the end of this month. I'm interested - my schedule killed my last attempt to playing online, but we sally on in hope.

How does a play by email game work? I remember some stuff from forums way in the distant past but those tended to devolve into "Ragnar bites the head off the kobold and spits its skull into the High Priest's eye, killing him and making him explode in such a way all the sexy ladies' clothes fall off."

What I'm saying, I need to dust of Ragnar's character sheet.

dinty_moore:

There's a really high dropout rate in Storium but when it works it's great fun. You need a good group and even then you have to assume a bunch of players will drop out. As a narrator, I managed to bring one game to a conclusion and have a second that's going to finish soon. As a player, I think I've only been in one short game that finished although I'm optimistic about a couple of others. If any Mefites want to connect on Storium, send me a message.

They're in a gamma release now and are supposed to release the real thing in a few months. I expect the number of games will pick up then.

oh, and on systems--Fiasco (previously on Mefi) is kind of nice because it plays out in one 2-3 hour session (including character- and setting-generation), so that might be a good option for folks who are unsure if they can commit to a regular weekly session but would still like to play something on an occasional Sunday afternoon. I haven't played online so I'm not sure of the pros/cons with Roll20 vs other systems, but it doesn't require too much kit (dice in two colors, index cards) and I know there's a fairly active playing-over-Hangouts community, so I imagine it can't be too difficult. Some of Bully Pulpit or One Seven's other games might be a good fit for one-shots or very short campaigns.

prize bull octorok is indeed an awesome DM! I had loads of fun playing NPCs in his Twitter 1E campaign, and I'm currently playing in his 5E D&D campaign on GamersPlane. He has great homebrew back-stories/worlds for his campaigns.
We started the 5E game with a party of 6 but 3 dropped out and we're still in the early-ish stages the of the campaign, so potentially a couple of people who want to join the party could do so (if it's OK with you PBO, obviously). The pace is about a couple of posts per character a week, although it's the summer holidays at the moment so I haven't been posting as often is I usually would.

Very keen, especially on play-by-post / email or (being in the UK) on a weekend game.

I can vouch for greasy_skillet's intro sessions - songs are still sung of Chuffy the goblin and his boar-wrestling rodeo.

Gotta post some highlights from PBO's Twitter campaign (italics = PBO quotes from the Projects thread):

- The party met a small colony of peaceful, friendly mushroom people. Due to a misunderstanding, the mushroom people released hallucinogenic spores on the party as a measure of self-defense. The few members who did not proceed to trip balls retaliated by going nuclear with their deadliest magical item (a 5d6 fireball bead on a Necklace of Missiles)

- party member has made me have to make all sorts of determinations about housing prices, average civilian wages, and marriage equality in the campaign setting.

- While the rest of the party was busy, Gwindle and Utter made a plan to check out the iron double doors with the mysterious creature behind them... (two low-WIS characters try to negotiate with a demon)

- My favourite ever D&D character - Chumsalt (played by MeFi's turbid dahlia), half-orc fighter who fancied himself a ranger - set up a private eye business called Chumsalt Wilderness Investigations. He has a special hat that gives him +1 Charisma bonus for people who like hats. His one and only job was to get an owlbear off a farm, he failed and harassed the farmers instead.

- when Gnaurm fell into the spike pit and managed to not get seriously hurt, then Grabathor tried to pull him out with a rope, failed his strength check, fell in and impaled himself

- "You rotate the octopus, to no effect"

- Chumsalt drank an unidentified potion and got turned into gas and had to be fanned around for a while. ("they are trying to waft the half-orc down to the basement to look for an escape tunnel")

Fiasco is really fun, but sometimes it can be difficult to create a coherent story, especially when your player count goes up. Another great system is any of the original world of darkness games.. They are very story and role playing based.

posted by robocop is bleeding at 6:08 AM on August 13, 2015

The last time there was a Metatalk on this, a lot--a lot-- of people expressed interest, but I'm not sure a game ever got started.

Here's several thoughts:

1. What about using IRL to organize one or two of these Hangout/Skype games? GMs could specify their ideal time and setting, link to the page here, and then potential players could sign up.
2. What about using FanFare to organize a play-by-mail game? Just a thought. (Honestly I think Storium is the best way to organize play-by-mail, etc. I backed it!)

This also makes me think we need an FPP on Apocalypse World and the indie storygamer scene. It's like a whole world of great arguments, links, cons, and actual games.

As a PBEMer, I find that three GM posts a week seems to be about right for the adult crowd. That gives people time to read and consider before posting and allows them to keep up with an open list game.

I'm technically not soliciting for House of Cards, but if you're interested in Amber & Everway, feel free to give me a MeMail. We're in it for the long haul and we're always up for lurkers, and occasionally we take apps from folks on the lurker list.
posted by immlass at 8:07 AM on August 13, 2015

It looks to me like we've got enough people for a few different groups of live online play, and maybe 1-2 groups of play by post, and then may be some one of sessions. I'm not sure what the best way to get all the info to organize the groups would be. Maybe something on doodle or... something similar.

We probably need a way for people to volunteer to GM (I'd be willing, but not right away). It seems like everyone's pretty easy going on what system, so maybe let that work itself out once the groups are formed?

I'd love to play a Monster Hearts (or Monster of the Week, or most of the Apocalypse Word hacks) game.

I'm also qualified to run D&D up to 3.5 if people don't get too obscure with their sourcebooks and want to get some practice in converting one of my old convention DnD games (previously in AD&D2 and DND 3.x) into DND Next/5e.

I have a friend who was a playtest for DnD Next and is doing the organized play campaigns now, so I have a resource to fall back on. (He has a mefi account but doesn't even lurk anymore I think.)

I can also run HERO/Champions in my sleep, but I understand that some people find it complex for online purposes. I can also do FATE because it's super-easy and have the Dresden Files rulebooks if folks want a structured setting.

You make a strong point. My focus of knowledge lately has been in the entire game-dev ecosystem that's sprung up around and from Apocalypse World, so I'm definitely thinking up links and things to bring in for a PbtA-focused FPP, but there's also definitely posts to be made about other aspects of the Great Indie Storygamer Revival.

I have a slight preference for D&D over other games, but understand that the system doesn't always play well over the intertoobz, so can easily amend that preference to generic fantasy or whatever. I'm stoked to be playing Call of Cthulhu for the first time in 15? years at Necronomicon next week, so who knows that might alight a passion for madness as well.

Play by email/post works well for me. My librarian's schedule is weird, plus we have the 5 year old, so live gaming can be trickier some days over others (Tuesday evenings are best, but I also don't work on Fridays). I could do a mix as well - play by post as a norm but carve out special days for live play.

I'm available to run or play in a Dungeon World campaign or play in Shadowrun every other week on Mondays or Wednesdays 9-11 EST (or even 9-midnight.) Looks like that might work for the two other *World positive folks, xbonesgt and tofu_crouton. Anyone else up for it? (We could probably squeeze in two more.)

I'm picturing a mostly-live Google Hangouts game with written summaries/after action reports and occasional play-by-post intermezzos. If it's Dungeon World, I have a few ideas for campaign settings (Mystical Medieval Iberian Reconquista, Dis/Planescape, or a variation of the Max Gladstone Craft world). If it's Shadowrun, I want to be the shaman.

Looks like that might work for the two other *World positive folks, xbonesgt and tofu_crouton. Anyone else up for it? (We could probably squeeze in two more.)

That would work for me! Mondays would be better, I think, but I'd be up for either.

Since D&D looks like the most popular, I will DM a run through of the 5th edition starter set adventure, "The Lost Mine of Phandelver." This adventure is designed to be friendly to new players and will use pre-generated characters that will go from first to fifth level. All player materials are available for free on the Wizards of the Coast website.

We will be using Roll20 for the virtual table and Google hangouts for voice. Players will be encouraged to use the private campaign forum on the Roll20 page to play by post between sessions. Sessions will be held bi-weekly and subsequent session times will be decided at the close of each session. I am only available Sunday, or week day nights CST. The first session will be Sunday 8/30 at 5 to 9 p.m. CST. Expect that there will be a minimum of 5 to 6 sessions.

To sign up, edit the "notes" cell after my MeFi username on the "GameMasters" tab of the spreadsheet. Simply add your Mefi username. The table will max at 5 players, first come first serve. I will contact interested players on 8/21 by MeMail.

Aw, darn, I am already playing that specific adventure with another group (what are the odds?). Maybe next time!

It sounds like we've definitely got interest.

Could we do the thing where if you're interested you go back into the spreadsheet and write under availability which nights work?

What about a tab for each game people have offered to run?
posted by sciatrix at 12:11 PM on August 14, 2015

I just added a "Players" column to the GM tab, so it can be easy to add who wants to play in a game.

Does one of the GM volunteers want to run a PBP game? There are requests for that mode of play specifically, instead of the skype/google hangout type.

I would love to be on board for this as a player. I have much experience with D&D in its various forms as both a player and a gm, but I've only ever played irl.

I quested but did not find, so downloaded and ordered off of Amazon.

I'm in the Play By Post (with occasional live interludes) camp. If someone needs a NPC brain, I can do that too.

First week of school or I'd have dropped by sooner.

I know that there've been a few (I think one is active now?) campaigns organized over at Mefight Club.

There are two, actually. Gnob's Folly - aka the Alpha Team - has been in action since 2009, playing 51 sessions in that time. This is the group robocop is bleeding spent some time with. They began at level one and - at least the originals - are now level 9-10.

The Beta Team started up in 2012 and has managed 21 sessions in that time. They began at level 2 and are now around level 6.

So, campaigns can be done even over a long time!

We're actually using Pathfinder now, as it retains a lot of the feel of 3.5 D&D with some good streamlining.

I actually was able to start them all up because of an AskMe thread many years ago. The setup I ended up going with was Fantasy Grounds II for the VTT and a small teamspeak (now mumble) server for voice. Fantasy Grounds II is light years ahead of any other table on the market as far as power and flexibility goes, although with all those options comes a pretty steep learning curve. It also has the disadvantage of being not free, although I just ponied up for the infinite use license since I have something like 5 different games running at this point overall. It also has the advantage of being the official 5e VTT: since this edition is not open license, that might be a big deal for online play.

I've played on Roll20 before and found it also quite good, although I'm not sure how well or even if it can do 5e.

If you are going to attempt some sort of ambitious campaign, be aware it's going to take a Herculean effort to pull off. Turns out adults are damn busy all the time, and scheduling something on the regular quickly becomes nightmarish. The best ways to accommodate this are probably to run short, focused con-style campaigns. One to three sessions and the a reset, which allows people to rotate in and out pretty easily.

If that's not your bag - and it's obviously not mine - then either have a high comfort level having at least one or two characters regented* or botted* per session if it's a "every third Saturday" sort of scheduling. I find both regenting and botting to be a real drain on time and energy , so I try to avoid it. That means pretty relentless scheduling and wrangling, a task I usually try to get someone in the group to take on. Our own personal framework is we'll generally try to have the game if everyone's schedule allows it or if one person can't make it. That makes games more infrequent, but everyone always gets to contribute.

Different groups use different things to coordinate, but if you go this route the two ones used between my groups are WhenIsGood or Doodle.

Anyway, I don't want to tell you ya business or anything, but I just thought I'd chime in with my experience since someone mentioned the MeFighter games above. Hope you're able to pull some off.

Good luck, and good hunting.

*Sorry. Just realized that might be a little to cantish. We use "regenting" to refer giving a PC over to another player to play and "botting" to refer to when the GM takes over for missing people.

It was a good group that filled buckets as they should. I regret that my schedule (ie, small child) did not allow said buckets to overflow.

I'm also interested, but I've never played anything like it and have quite a bit of social anxiety. A play-by-mail game sounds good. Would it be by snail mail, email, or the forum linked up thread? I'm having surgery next week, so likely would have to put off starting for a while, unfortunately.

looks like you've added notes or comments to certain cells, instead of editing the contents of the cell. you should just be able to double-click (or double-tap, on a phone?) to be able to put text and stuff directly on the spreadsheet. Oh, and make sure you're adding your name to the Players sheet if you're playing instead of GMing - I messed this up originally!

I hope I'm not too late to the party. I think I could possibly manage a real-time online meetup thing like Roll20 (which I've looked into previously), but I think the play-by-post option might work the best for me. I'll go check out the spreadsheet and fill in appropriate details.

Well, sprain your back and look what you miss. I'm up for running all sorts of stuff for mefites. I'll have to go through and read-through the thread in more detail before I go spouting off on that, though. Also, I've got NecronomiCON looming, so perhaps after that.

Just wanted to kind of bump this in Recent Activity. I've managed to glom on to an already existing Play By Post game, and while my character has not even been introduced yet, it's tons of fun just following along. The pace of play is slow enough that I could probably handle playing a second PBP game at the same time, and there are a bunch of eager PBP players on the spreadsheet, so if we've got a DM who wants to try PBP, now's your chance.

I might be starting something in Storium at the beginning of the month? I've got to do some planning beforehand, but the general idea would be extremely episodic*, ridiculous**, and modernish setting.

*Think like Mission: Impossible the TV series - where everyone is a possible agent sent on the mission, but not everyone would be on each mission.

**About as ridiculous as Leonard Nimoy being a master of disguise.

I'll update the spreadsheet once I'm reasonable sure the idea will work.

I am currently putting together the Dungeon World group to start up our first session next Monday night. If you expressed interest, but don't have an email address in your profile, please get in touch. (My gmail is in my profile, it's just my username at gmail.) Also, I MeMailed a few people, but not sure I got everybody.

The current plan is to play in Dis, the deconstructed Planescape Sigil/City of Doors. Also, the day of our first game I'll announce the Hangout here so any stragglers can log on at 9 pm EST if you're interested.

The city of Dis is a dungeon that connects all other dungeons. Its sewers and cisterns sink their roots into the underworld. Its pinnacles and spires grasp at the celestial spheres and have begun to spread across the face of the moon. To the west are the docks that gnaw at the elemental reaches, where ships come and go on the seas of fire, air, and water. And in every direction are the planes, tiny as a small fiefdom or large enough to seem infinite, but all in great peril.

Dis exists outside space and time, and it grows by consuming other worlds, invading them through their urban areas. The capital of a mighty galactic empire might find itself reduced to an office complex in a small manufacturing district, it opulent senate chambers eyed by boho artists seeking cheaper rents. You may come across the promised afterlife of a devout culture among other plazas in a public park. People in Dis come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and levels of corporeality, the legacy of hundreds of societies absorbed over the millenia. Over it all rules the Sultana - the priests say (if you give them a few coins) that she is the city's mother, and welcomes refugees from a thousand worlds out of guilt for what her child has done.

Wanna play? MeMail me your gmail address! Here are the classes. If you Google around you can find a bunch more. (Same for character sheets.) Just ignore the racial moves for your class. You don't have a race. When you create your character, decide on your species, ethnicity, and cultural heritage, choosing anything (or any combination of things) that sounds interesting to you to play and that fits your concept of what your shared home world was like (which you will elaborate through this process, natch). There's a lot of potential for gonzo here, but just keep in mind that you're playing a person. So, don't play, like "a sentient can of tuna!" just because you can, do it only if there's something compelling to you about the concept.

If you're familiar with DW, then pick (from monster moves) or write 2-3 "heritage moves" for your character instead of the races listed there. You'll be able to use these during play (I'll explain the mechanics later).

I know it's been asked for before, but if we could run a play by post session that's be awesome. I'd even be willing to take over GMing at some appropriate juncture, and pitch in money for any materials that are needed. I just have zero experience, so can't really start out GMing.

Given the pacing, I think we could accomodate a fairly large party, and I'm always willing to stretch things to get a Mefite on board.

I think last weekend went by without a single new post

Yeah the action generally happens on weekdays.

Am I correct in reading that AC is now a positive number, in that the higher the value, the better the protection?

Correct. THAC0 is but a fond memory. Now you roll & add your proficiency/attribute bonuses and try to get a number higher than the target's AC. It...actually makes a lot more sense this way.
