edgeways has passed away July 21, 2015 8:02 AM Subscribe
Sad news: long-time Metafilter community member edgeways, Edgewood Smith, passed away last week.
I don't have a link to a formal obit at the moment, but his family and friends have been posting photos and memories on his facebook page.
He hosted a weekly radio show called "The Local", under the handled DJ-E, on Duluth public radio station KUMD; they'll be running a special tribute show for him tomorrow, Weds July 22nd, at 5pm Central time, if you'd like to listen in.
edgeways was a thoughtful and conversational fixture on Metafilter, steadily around and active on various parts of the site over the course of eleven years, with dozens of posts to the blue and the green and the grey and thousands of comments and answers shared with the community. He also produced and posted one of my favorite tracks ever on MetaFilter Music, a reworking of You Spin Me Round as a gorgeous, wrenching acoustic duet.
I never got a chance to meet him personally, but I was glad he was here and I'll miss his presence on the site, and I know a lot of folks here will likewise.

I was so sad to hear this. He had some nice comments in the how to help a wheelchair user thread the other day.

I just registered here a few days ago and had no clue Edge was a prominent member yet. But I first met him about ten years ago while he was trying to get some photographers together to do an exhibition that he wanted to be hung on public transit buses to bring it out the galleries, and into places where people who normally don't go to galleries would be.
Always a pleasant person who would say hi and and take an honest interest in what you were doing with your life. Real world Edge seemed to be the perfect user for the type of people this website seems to draw in.

Ingame in EVE he was a thoughtful industrialist, turned sneaky and opportunistic assassin when the time was ripe.
Also a team player extraordinaire with a [properly] low tolerance for the normal sexist/racist/homophobic bullshit overhead that comes with playing online games with other folks. I recall several times where he quite simply and plainly told folks that associated with us about how their casual, errant verbiage was intolerable and it helped.
Mefi/MFC's presence in the MMO-sphere was better off for his being there. His Tempest or 'Cane was always a welcome sight when shit hit the fan and he was always a pleasure in chat and teamspeak.
.
Fly safe friend.

I suppose I am one of the few longtime MeFites who met the man in person, because we live in the same neighborhood and traveled in the same Duluth circles. I remember when he messaged me here years ago and said, "Are you [Real Name]?" It made me feel like I had a real-world compatriot here. As far as I know, he is the only one (aside from a new guy I see up above) who I've known in both spheres.
He was truly one of the nicest guys around and it always felt great to see his well-reasoned discussion and wry wit on the Blue, and I was always so glad when I ran into him and his wife out and about. The news yesterday just wrecked me.

Death is before me today:
Like the course of a stream
Like the return of a man from the war-galley to his house.
Death is before me today:
Like the home that a man longs to see,
After years spent as a captive.
From "Dialogue of a Misanthrope with His Soul" (ca 2000 BC), from the Middle Period of Egypt, obviously translated (this is the translation from Neil Gaiman's comic books).

Death is before me today:
Like the recovery of a sick man,
Like going forth into a garden after sickness
Death is before me today:
Like the odor of myrrh,
Like sitting under a sail in a good wind.

edgeways grew up here in Newfoundland but hadn't lived here for years. I saw him make a comment to that effect a few years ago and was delighted when he added me as a contact, since there aren't many Newfoundlanders on this site. I thought "Oh cool! Maybe we'll meet up someday!"
I'm very sad that I will never have that chance.

I was first introduced to edgeways during a MeFi Music Swap where I discovered he lived in Duluth. I hadn't known of very many other Minnesotans on MeFi, so he stood out with that. Plus, I helped introduce him to some music as it sounded like he was just starting up that local music radio show.
Typically, all of my favorite bands suck, but edgeways was a person who sounded kind. Like even if my favorite bands did suck, he'd like me anyway.

edgeways and I share a birthday, and we both signed up for mefi accounts around the same time about eleven years ago. I've left my . out of respect already, but I wanted to check back in and honor his memory with actual words.
Life is too goddamn short. Be kind. We'll miss you, edgeways.

“No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away...” ― Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man

Thanks for having shared with us here so much (sadly this thank you, as far too many I tend to make, is weak, far after the fact, obviously empty of all but words, devoid of the urgency demanded—and ultimately—too late; really only a curiosity for someone who happens to read this in the cold, closed and empty 'after-the-fact'). It is frustrating and challenging and disconcerting that I do not know how to share this feeling and wish with those of us who are missing. Well, no, I do know how, but it is only possible through saying thank you all—now—before it is too late. But still I have missed that chance here. I am too late. The world without sharing, feels empty. The world may well be huge, with so much to see, to do and to be a part of; but our lives, they sure can find ways to fly away far too quickly, feeling receding, blurry and tiny.
I still wish I could say that 'thank you' personally to everyone who shares their words/ideas/mind/heart and or opinions here (and all places) before it is too late for me to be able to say. You are important. To me, and to many others. I wouldn't be where I am without this place, and this place wouldn't be without you all.
Thank you (all, and especially edgeways) for how you share with—and share in—this ongoing uniting project and still; I remain sorry we all experience this life in such a discontiguous, disconnected manner. I'll try to speak up before it is too late.
I . I
Trying to get a dot in, edgeways. I was far too close to just mothballing this whole comment as sucking up other's air, leaving me with another thank you left unsaid, no. Here's to doing our part to keep the ripples we each manage to make keep moving, to keep them from disappearing and from dying. What can we do now? We could remain by the waters edge, making noise, making ripples, being vigilant, making changes, appreciating the ripples made by others. Keep making our own ripples, and keep naming and seeing and remembering and recording the ripples made by others.
I am sorry for the loss of so many wonderful people. While this is certainly an imperfect thank you, I don't want this sorry and thank you to be merely another in my accreting pile of things left unsaid.
May you all know peace in your time.
