FanFare Watercooler July 10, 2015 9:22 AM   Subscribe

We just added a new way to find which shows, movies, and podcasts people are discussing most called FanFare Watercooler.

With the volume of posts at FanFare it can be difficult to know where exactly people are congregating. We put together a simple page that shows which TV, Movies, and Podcasts have had the most interest in the last seven days. You'll see the show art for the top three in each category and a list of any others below. Click the poster or the show name to see that show's page and a list of recent posts. You can also click 'Recent Episode' to go to the most recent active thread for that show.

FanFare Watercooler is linked in the tabs on the front page of FanFare. We hope this helps people discover some conversations they might not have known were happening. This is still a work in progress so please let us know what's working and what isn't.

Very cool -- one odd thing is that the latest episode of True Detective is showing up under "Classic TV" but I think that's because the episode was mistakenly marked as belonging to season 1.

This is the post showing up for me under True Detective in Classic TV. It's from Season 1, so it's not listed under current TV.

Oop, nope, camcgee had it right; that's definitely S2, was just mistagged.

Mad Max is gonna be on there forever, isn't it.

I find FanFare weirdly intimidating as there's just so much there. This is a nice way to navigate popular threads. Thanks!

Is this why profiles are currently unavailable?

Nope, unrelated server woes.

Heh, maybe! Game of Thrones is similarly full of post-mortem vim. We've poked at this a few times to try and find a good balance with activity metrics that aren't too fiddly or baroque; pb's done a good job of trying alternate weightings and stuff, and all in all it seems like it's giving pretty reasonably zeitgeisty results, though the specific problem of the big cultural phenomena sticking around seems like it's because it is the zeitgeist even if those things seem "old" by day-by-day standards.

Maybe "older" TV instead of "classic" TV, if something from last year can be listed in that ceatgory?

I like it! Great work everyone.

OMG, YES! I browse mostly on my phone and had given up Fanfare because I could never find anything. Thanks!!

Game of Thrones is similarly full of post-mortem vim.

To be fair, GoT does involve ice zombies and Harryhausen style skeletons alongside mysterious fire-powered resurrections. And it is based on a series of books that just seem to get longer without necessarily getting anywhere.

No such thing as Valar Cloture there.

Love the new feature!

I keep reading it as Fanfare Watercolor.... I need that damn cataract surgery, I tell you.

Fanfare Watercolor is the title for my upcoming Watercolour Challenge rewatch, including all 210 original daytime episodes (but NOT the 2005 celebrity version, which I do not consider canon, as it does not include a reading from a local poet).

Oh my god, is that a real thing? It is a real thing, the internet tells me. Watercolour Challenge! I need this in my life.

"The challenge is to find Britain's best amateur painter and along the way to explore the landscapes of Britain" And a reading from a local poet? SO BRITISH!

While we are here, can we get an iOS home page icon for FanFare? Current Status :(

One problem I ran into with creating and retroactively tagging the Holiday Movie Club is that there's no good indication or way to get from a movie or tv show discussion page back into the club page. For example: The post for Fast Five has no indication, other than in the tags, that is it a part of the Fast & Furious club, nor is there a way to get into the club page from the movie post.

For the 2014 Holiday Movie club, I usually built it into the post, which is good practice, but people need to know to do that.

Adding some sort of Club Info or club controls to a thread that is part of a club is something we're thinking about. For now, I think it'd be great to link to the club page in the post description but it's not a requirement. People can enjoy a thread without even knowing it's part of a club, and folks who are members of a particular club will see posts from that club show up My FanFare. They might not even need to visit the club page once they've signed up.

But I do think it'd be nice to link to the club page somewhere so new folks can discover it and join if they want.
