Yes, the People, like savage dogs, demand more information! Toward the mysterious North they cry: "Tell us the weight!" "Tell us the height!" "Only then we will we be satisfied and rejoice!" The teeth of the People gleam in the moonlight as they chant.
I'll just leave this congratulations here and sneak away.

He is born and beautiful and drinking peacefully right now. He is just about the loveliest human I have ever met. He, my girlfriend and I are staying in a family room in the hospital for a few nights. He is 3.4 kilos and 51 centimeters long. I'm a bit too exhausted to trust myself not to mess up the conversion into Imperial measurements.
He was born at 1.50 last night after 70 hours of labor. Everything was normal in the process, except that everything happened at very slow speed.
The contractions started at about a quarter to four on Wednesday morning. Once they got quite severe, about twelve hours later, we called the maternity hospital and were advised to come. At first they expected the birth to be rather soon, but as the hours wore on and evening shift turned to night shift, they decided that it was better if we went home so that my girlfriend might get some sleep.
However, the contractions proved to be too frequent and severe for my girlfriend to sleep, even though she was exhausted since she hadn't managed to sleep the previous night because she'd had to go to the bathroom every twenty minutes, even before the contractions began.
The frequency increased so we called the hospital again and were advised to come back in. After finding that everything was still happening at a snail's pace, the midwife (third so far) decided to inject some pain relief so that my girlfriend might sleep. So we slept a couple of hours together on a bed in an observation room before she could go to a day ward, at which point I was sent home because there was no place to sleep there for fathers (or other birth partners).
I slept for about three and a half hours and then returned to the hospital. Things were still proceeding at the same slow pace, so we were in the day ward until about tea-time, when the midwife there judged that it was far enough along to send us back to a birth ward, though we went to a different one.
That was on Wednesday evening, at which point labor had been happening for about thirty-five hours. For the rest of the labor we were mostly in the same room in the birth ward. My girlfriend's contractions got stronger and stronger, but the cervical dilation and everything else kept happening at the same slow pace. During the thirty-five hours until the boy was born we slept about three hours total, most of which was during the first night after a similar pain relief injection to the one given the night before.
My task during that time was to take care of my girlfriend, bringing her juice, milk, water etc. as well as food, when the pain relief was working well enough for her to keep food down. I also helped her with physical movements, gave her massages, put cold towels on her face and neck, and talked her through the pain.
And yes, she did get all the different kinds of pain relief, but during the last few hours she could feel the contractions even through morphine she got as a spinal injection.
I'll spare you the gory details of the birth, but it mostly went quite well, but slowly. At the end the boy had to be helped with a suction device, which turned out to be trickier than expected so the junior doctor asked a senior doctor to assist.* The senior doctor got the boy past the last hurdle and he was quickly cleaned and placed in his mother's arms, seventy hours after his journey began. There he rested while the room was cleaned up by the platoon of midwives and doctors that had attended to the birth. I sent text messages to various relatives and friends, and then gave him his first bath under the guidance of the midwife who'd supervised the birth. The midwives, in total ten throughout the whole labor and birth, were all really wonderful. While waiting for the midwife to finish suturing up my girlfriend I had my first conversation with my son, which involved comparing the time it takes to fly to the International Space Station to the time it took him to emerge into the world. Then I told him more about space stations, as that is probably the most important thing to know when you're less than an hour old.
After all that was done, my girlfriend and I had a small meal and the she went to the recovery ward with the boy. I left them there because again it had no place for birth partners to sleep. I slept for about four hours at home before coming back to the recovery ward this morning to take care of the boy while my girlfriend slept.
There was slight concern that he might have an infection because of how long he's been in the womb after the water broke and so it turned out. Luckily it's a very mild one, but that still means he needs to be in the hospital for at least three days for treatment and observation. As that's also how long my girlfriend needs to be in recovery, they decided to turn the recovery room into a family room, and that's where we are.
My girlfriend talked this morning about how amazing the experience was. It would have been a lot nicer for everyone, especially my girlfriend, if it had been over much quicker, but every birth is different and this one was ours. There are very many moments we will remember forever. My girlfriend is recovering, but still doesn't have much physical energy. She lost 1.3 liters of blood during the birth. But she's already much better in the evening than she was during the day.
Our son, infection aside, is very healthy. He's drinking and sleeping very well. I'm doing well too, though I did have a moment of feeling overwhelmed as I waited while a couple of pediatricians inserted an IV in my son. But it passed after one of the doctors told me all the signals were good, and also how to take care of him while he still has the IV needle in his arm, which turned out to be quite simple.
And that's where we are now. We didn't do some of the things we'd planned to do during our son's first 24 hours, like decide on the name. We just haven't had time to talk that deeply about it, though we have the only three or four options we decided on before. But this birth certainly taught us that even if things are going slowly, they'll get there in the end. I'll let you all know when we've decided on a name. Baby pictures will probably also wait until we're home.
I can hardly explain how happy I am, so I'll just leave it at saying that I'm extremely happy.
Thank you all for the messages of congratulations and lovely thoughts!
* Terry Pratchett readers might understand that I felt immediately becalmed because the senior doctor bore a great resemblance to Nanny Ogg, down to the mix of good cheer and unquestioned authority.

And much, much further down the road, should you guys opt for a sibling it'll probably go much, much faster, exponentially so. Peanut #2 barely let me have the epidural and Hubs had to rush back from reparking the car into the birthing room.

Congratulations, and a heartfelt Right-on to your very clearly bad-ass girlfriend. (Who of course now graduates to most significant woman in your life. For always and in ways mom will never match.)
Remember that sleep deprivation can turn anyone into a monster and you're like a dive team now and you've got to look out for each other.
Also Charlie is a fantastic name for a boy. Just throwing that out there. If you were closer we'd offer you clothes - but as is I'd leave it at a congrats, have fun !

Or, possibly, a galactic agent of some sort.
It's hard to tell, as he's only dozens of hours old.
They do grow up fast, though, so start molding his attitude now!
Welcome, Kasper Leo!

Holy fuckballs. I suppose it's appropriate for an Icelander that he doesn't have a birth story, he has a birth SAGA.
Congrats to all three of you, especially Ms K because again I say HOLY FUCKBALLS, and here's hoping that the recovery is merely a sonnet.

Icelandicness may actually have been a mitigating factor, as in his mother's Finnish heritage there's the Kalevala, where a character is in labor for seven hundred years. Though there were points during my girlfriend's labor were time stretched into centuries.

Kasper the Cosmonaut's Mission Log, Day 6
The Giants still hold me captive. I have barely been out of their grasp for more than fifteen minutes at a time. They seem impervious to my weapons. I have unleashed the Hypersonicblast numerous times but they counter by having one of the Giants stick a chest protrusion into my energy intake socket. I am rendered powerless as my energy storage facilities are overwhelmed, unable to keep barraging them with the Hypersonicblast. I have been unable to resist these ministrations so far. I have responded by unleashing my Bioweapons repeatedly, both the Bioparticle Stream and Bioshrapnel. It seems to have some effect on the Giants, who remove the shield but only to neutralize the remaining Bioshrapnel with a quick blast of warm, inert particles which even my strongest Biobomb Residue cannot resist. Then they replace the Bioweapons shield with another. They seem to have an unlimited supply. Today I finally managed to get past the shield. The Giants have not run away in terror as expected, though there is a limited success in that one of them is distracted by repairing the damage I have inflicted. Unfortunately, the other one quickly moves me away from the site of the attack, leaving me unable to press the advantage. I may need to improvise new tactics. I have been experimenting with reversing the energy conduits and emitting pure energy bursts. That tactic is still in its infancy. Will report back later.

Ok, when can we more have Baaby Picts. And the Cosmo story is divine.
CHAPTER 1.
Kasper invent nano-stents. The first nano based spacecraft. A baseball sized spacecraft is launched and will replicate a meteor processing station and cargo ship. But on day 374, an anomalous reading discovers a oval shaped chamber within asteriod 257-fSd. Jupiter station is transmitting data that confirms what is suspected to be Odins stash of diamond and hafnium. Sensing the danger from the X Ray scanners, Karl must steal a Soyez 21 spacecraft in order to save earths vital supply line with the nano space program coming into doubt, little room is left for error. A quick refuel from Europa and the 2 week journey begins.
