"The Big Lebowskemoji" from the mind of mathowie May 11, 2015 6:12 PM Subscribe
I got a kick out of this and thought it deserved a MetaTalk post: The Big Lebowskemoji, from MetaFilter's own mathowie.

As I come close to the half-century mark, I increasingly find myself turning back with pleasure to many of the aimless pleasurable things that I loved to do as a child -- video games, golden age science fiction, riding my bicycle for hours on end, sitting in front of my window just watching the sun go down, going to bed early and rising earlier. I feel pretty good about all that.
Which is to say, I guess, that even if I might not quite get it, I'm in favor of people spending time doing whatever it is that makes them feel good.

How or even who could respond there stavs, though, as usual, I miss the point. So I blame Ev.
I'll bet realπ΅ Matt couldn't do an episode of Battlestar Galactica.

I'd like to petition the author to include this ever-handy Lebowskyism:
"You're not wrong, Walter. You're just an asshole."

You know they do have graphic emoji but it takes something cute and lighthearted and makes it nasty. I do like the peach as a stand-in for asshole (and butt), though. That has some wit.

Heh. The strange new reality we live in is one where you will probably have to actually mefimail or tweet at Matt for him to know he's being addressed in Metatalk.

I'm quite busy at work but the upside is my nights and weekends are free to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. Plus, during this exercise I learned a shit ton more about emoji (and terrible sporadic emoji support in browsers).

I have always appreciated Matt's incredible enthusiasm for emoji, although I must admit I am skeptical about how MetaFilter-related/thread-worthy this is.

Having seen neither, I'd assumed this was a Breaking Bad reference. This bumped the movie up my list of those to see eventually.

halifix: eventually, eh? What are you doing tonight? Seriously, what are you doing tonight?
It doesn't matter, ditch those plans and rent/stream/buy the movie.
I'll refund your money if you don't absolutely love the movie.*

The thing is, on first viewing, you may come away with "huh, what did I just see? was that good?" but after 2-3 more viewings you'll be converted, pick up on lots of the subtle things. I saw it in the theater when it came out and thought it was a disappointing thing to follow their previous movie Fargo, but I kind of sort of liked it and knew I should watch it again someday.
And yeah, I should have put it on Projects, I agree it's not really MeFi related and not a great fit for MetaTalk.

mathowie: I've recently watched two people watch it for the first time (separately). My SO and my mother. Neither one of them had Fargo on the brain when they watched it (which was good), but both really enjoyed the movie.
And, yeah, I remember enjoying it on the first viewing.
That being said, I enjoyed it more on subsequent viewings (something that is pretty rare for me; Blade Runner, Brazil, and maybe Heathers are all that are on that list).

Is it possible to render the Sobchakism...
"Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos"
...in emoji without using a swastika?

The thing is, on first viewing, you may come away with "huh, what did I just see? was that good?"
I saw it in the theater the first time suffering from the delirium of the worst flu ever. I was young and dumb and didn't realize I was sick; my friends wanted to go out to a movie, so I went. I knew I felt off, but was trying to power through it. Afterwards I slept like 15 hours in my friend's car. The next day when the 36 hours of pooping and barfing began, they were like, "oh, he has the flu, that's why he's acting so weird."
My first fever-brained Lebowski viewing was exactly like, "what did I just see?" It was the same feeling when in sixth grade my BFF's dad rented Raising Arizona on VHS and showed it to us on sleepover night. It was just packed with things that I couldn't process, but I trusted everyone that it was really funny and I had to figure out why on my own in time. I love The Big Lebowski for that confused feeling that's still there on every re-watch and finding a new layer of absurdity to laugh at.
Thanks Matt, Lebowskemoji is wonderful.
