We almost got our own beer. Wonder who owns the name?

Funny, I was recently trying to find the origin of this term as used on the internet, and didn't really come up with it... though I bet it's been addressed here before. The first time it was used in reference to Mefi was, I think, in this Metatalk comment. At any rate, we do, obviously, need our own beer.

(Here's a haphazardly searched reference specifically to internet-as-hivemind from the year before MeFi launched.)

When did beer brewing become the domain of litigious fucknobs?

Is it because of all those years of making overhopped IPAs, the bitterness has been seeping into their skin and blood?

The Blue = Behemoth
The Grey = Kraken
The Green = Leviathan

Music can be Naga, Jobs can be Hydra, and FanFare can be Moloch I guess. IRL, as you might guess considering I just compared a website to fictitious alien invasions, does not apply.

I'm positive litigious fucknobbery preceded this too though.

This article says that these are the folks in Chicago. I don't see the Hive-Minded in their current lineup. Maybe it's a seasonal of some kind.

botanic beers? ok then.

Meta beer does exist. It's Ethiopian and the beer advocate consensus is right. It is okay.

"Hive mind" (two words) goes back a ways and seems to come out of beekeeping. See for example these journal snippets from about 1943, and this book from 1945. It makes the jump to science fiction in 1957.

As "hivemind" (one word) it makes its first Googleable book appearance* in this 1983 book about science fiction movies. The snippet shown appears to be about the 1977 film Empire of the Ants. (This is based on a 1905 H. G. Wells story but the original story doesn't use "hive mind".)

*Google book search also brings up this 1960 result for "hivemind" but shows none of the text. It's a scifi novel called The Midwich Cuckoos, which involves "extraterrestrial beings" so it could contain "hivemind" as well.

It doesn't show up on Beer Advocate, and Untappd only lists it as appearing at the Oak Park Micro Brew Review, a Chicago beer fest. It's apparently a Blonde Ale served through a Randal with Ancho Chili, Papaya, and Cherry. So a) you're not going to see it in your corner bodega, and b) ugh.

Really interesting. And then "hive mind" was apparently imported from science fiction to Internetspeak by Kevin Kelly — or at least popularized, I'm not sure if this was the very first such usage (though he apparently thinks so) but it's clearly the most influential — in Out of Control (1995). (This is also the source of a lot of the other "swarm" and "wisdom of crowds" pop-social theory so familiar in Internet culture.)

As "hivemind" (one word) it makes its first Googleable book appearance* in this 1983 book about science fiction movies.

Trivial, but: it's actually hyphenated across a line break there, so impossible to know for sure, but I'm guessing it was meant as a two-word phrase. Some of the contemporary mid-'90s references to Kelly's Netspeak version give it as intercapped "HiveMind," so it seems like maybe running the words together was initially a computerese, look-it's-a-techie-word move.

It makes the jump to science fiction in 1957.

The SF Citations project (and thus the Draft Additions for the OED/Oxford Dictionary of SF) for hive-mind, n. couldn't beat 1950 as the earliest use.
J. H. SCHMITZ in Galaxy Sci. Fiction Dec. 22/2   It's pretty certain, too, that the Halpa have the hive-mind class of intelligence, so what goes for the nerve systems of most of the ones they send through to us might be nothing much more than secondary reflex-transmitters.
If you'd like to see it in context, here's Second Night of Summer on archive.org.

I don't know about beer. But I do know that ginger beer is super easy, doesn't require much precision, and sometimes comes out tasting like beer-beer. We found it was easiest to brew in Portland in summer. Where by "brew" I mostly mean "wait."

If you want empty glass bottles with cages, you can sometimes acquire them by offering to pay the bottle deposit fee to places that accepts returns.

I'm planning on making a beer next weekend and I've been having some trouble deciding on a style. Maybe I'll put together a MeFi themed batch. Something with blueberries for the Blue? A Meta-Unfiltered heff?

Tapping it seems like a solid excuse for an NYC meetup.
