Is there a way to see the tags on a post when using the mobile platform? If not, can this be added? Thanks awesome people!

The tags are below the comment box, and you can either scroll to the bottom or press the Skip button at the top of the post to get there.

...Unless you're using the classic theme, in which case I dunno.
posted by zeptoweasel at 9:27 AM on March 1, 2015

In the Modern Theme, the tags are down at the bottom (you can click 'skip' to get there). They're not visible in the older themes, and my impression is it would be tricky and cluttered to add them to the older themes, so that's not something that has been on the to-do list.

pb's out of internet range right now although he might have some thoughts later on.

This is my favorite feature of the new site design. I <3 tags.

Also, while I'm here, can I just say again how great the new bold/etc buttons are? They are great.

Yes, yes you can! 👍 â˜ș

Sadly, I love swipe to favorite too much to switch. I realize this is a pagan remnant of the old pre-modern interface, but my clan and I believe, in our marrow, that, if we favorite enough, the Sun will come back.

In the meantime, spitbull, the Scroll to Bottom bookmarklet might be useful.

Are you sure?

Didn't pb ascend to become One with the Internet during that MeTa last year? I am pretty sure I heard choirs of 8bit angels singing songs of praise....

I do not get the "SKIP" link

Yeah, at iPad widths, we're still toying and tweaking with a solution to that (probably a tiny arrow in the top bar, etc)

Sorry, but if I may... Is it just me or is the "Skip" button a bit unintuitive? Is that the standard name for a shortcut link to the end of a page? It's just that if I hadn't been trying everything looking for the tags one time, I don't think I'd ever have discovered what it was. I'd been automatically ignoring it because it seemed like a bit of an ad that didn't load properly or a link to the next FPP or something.

I like Skip, every time I press it I think of Gilligan's Island.

I don't think it's just you. We had a difficult time coming up with a term for that button. When we launched the modern theme it said "Sidebar". Our thinking was that it would lead you to the information that is in the sidebar at desktop size. Folks rightly pointed out that there is no 'sidebar' at the mobile width so that was confusing.

Most websites don't provide a link that takes you to the bottom of the page so I don't think there is a standard term for it. On MetaFilter the button doesn't send you to the very bottom—so I'm not sure "Bottom" would be appropriate. The button takes you past the main content to some helpful extra info like tags and the links to share on social networks. It's a way to skip past the main content, so "Skip". I think it's probably something that many people will need to learn by trying instead of understanding automatically.

All other fixes aside, in mobile Safari you can always bring up the non-mobile version of a web site by taking the following non-intuitive steps:

1. Go to the website, Metafilter or whatever. Get shown the mobile site.
2. Tap back in the address bar, as if you're going to type in a different URL.
3. Instead of typing in a different URL, drag down in the content area of the web browser view.
4. Tap "Request Desktop Site".
5. VoilĂ .

How about relabelling it "footers"?

Mefi is an American site, so we'd have to call it Soccers.

Well shit, that Skip button is exactly what I want in my life but I was always afraid to press it.

My mind was always like I don't know what you are going to skip if you press that and you might not like the result, so DO NOT TOUCH! Which is weird because that is the exact opposite of my usual reaction upon seeing a button like that, and rationally what could I have possibly been going to skip that would have such a profoundly negative impact on my life?

Anyway, what I am saying is that I had (and still have) an aversion to that button that is irrational, but I don't think I will be getting over it. Maybe I am weird.

Maybe calling the button Tags is better? I know I am always screwing around here, but I am dead serious about not liking the Skip button even after knowing what it does. I'm going to go lie down now because I know how crazy that sounds.

"Jump"?
posted by Going To Maine at 7:18 AM on March 2, 2015 [1 favorite]

Yeah, something about the placement, the shape of the arrow, and the fact that it says "Skip" make it look exactly like a button to bypass some ad asset that didn't load, like one of those interstitial videos or something. I get a weird feeling every time I hit it even though I know what it does and find it really useful.

How about labeling the button "Meta"?

"Beans"

Maybe ">Navbar" or ">Footer", with an arrow?
posted by Lexica at 9:30 AM on March 2, 2015

I like 'Bottom' or 'Foot' both for their clarity and because clicking body parts is titillating.

I don't think it's just you. We had a difficult time coming up with a term for that button.

You could set it so if the comments >1,000, it is labeled "Jaunt"

It's more descriptive than "skip," pb. But calling it "tags" - the one thing most userd want and aren't now getting in a clear way with the current design - makes much, much more sense than "skip."
posted by mediareport at 6:24 AM on March 3, 2015

It might make more sense for the specific instance that we're discussing, but we use this button in many places. On the front page, the button takes you to your contact activity, the sideblog, and everything else in the sidebar at desktop width. I think describing the action makes more sense than the content you'll find so it can be generalized to all of the locations and content where we use it.

How do I bring back the modern mobile theme on my device? I fumblefingered something in Safari and it's gone now.

Can the button be labeled differently for the front page vs. the rest of the site or does that require the ability to manage quantum entanglement?
posted by Johnny Wallflower at 7:55 AM on March 3, 2015

Yeah, we could use different labels in different places. We'd shift the complaints to, "Why does this button say different things in different places when it does the same thing?"
posted by pb (staff) at 7:58 AM on March 3, 2015

I think part of the issue is that on the Modern Theme, the skip button has an arrow to the right. If it were an arrow pointing down it would make a lot more sense. (Similarly, the return to post button should have an arrow pointing up, not left.)

Yeah, agreed Pfardentrott.
posted by pb (staff) at 7:58 AM on March 3, 2015

Originally the idea was to imply "sidebar", that's why the arrows are pointing to the right and left. It's supposed to invoke the idea that you're opening and closing the sidebar. But I don't think that translates as well as we'd hoped.

How do I bring back the modern mobile theme on my device?

Go to Preferences, choose Modern under themes, and click Save. That should do it.
posted by pb (staff) at 8:01 AM on March 3, 2015

Maybe if pressing the button activated some kind of funky animated pull-in from the right for the sidebar it would make sense, but I can definitely tell that it's just jumping down the page. I think pointing down is fine; it's common enough on other sites for tags and such to be at the bottom of a post.
posted by Pfardentrott at 8:04 AM on March 3, 2015

Yeah, I like the idea of incorporating down (and up) arrows.
