Happy New Year! The MeFi FAQ says "On the footer of every MetaFilter page is: © 1999-2014 MetaFilter Network Inc. All posts are © their original authors." Which is perfectly accurate; the copyright date hasn't been changed to 2015 yet. Just saying.

Oops, I thought we changed it up to the current year variable, but pb will get it fixed up later tonight I'm sure.

Thank you for accepting it in the spirit in which it was given. (GOTCHA!)
There are running Copyright Date jokes on both the Basic Instructions and Queen Victoria webcomics that make me more aware of such nonsense than most.

Quick, while it's temporarily in the public domain, let's make a copy of the entire site and post it on KICKASSTORRENTS, before the man shuts us down! Then everyone will be able to read Metafilter whenever they want, and for FREE!

We could make it into a book. Or a tumblr. Or a series of animated gifs. Or a baked bean cookbook.

The lack of a copyright notice (or updated date) will probably not put a work into the public domain in any country that has properly implemented the Berne Convention. [/ippedant]

Copyright is sooo 2014. Sorry fusty old white folks, but your favorite "respectable" intellectual property regime is a lumbering dinosaur that is crushing the dreams of today's youth - time for it (and you) to go to the senile old white folk's museum and play bingo while listening to your Bing Crosby phonographs. Bye bye!

In its place, all the cool young people have signed up to quidnuncright, a hip new IP regime that allows quidnunc kid wealth management Inc to carefully and responsibly exploit our posts and comments for maximum revenue on our behalf. Remember: if you're not paying quidnunc kid's low management fees and associated charges, then you are NOT the produce being sold. Put THAT on a T-shirt, GrandMa Thowie. Uh - I get a 30% cut of the sales, though.

1.2b Viz., referencing quidnunc kid inc's statement of copyright:

I work for a chain of weekly local newspapers; we date each issue for the year and week. A couple years ago, somebody forgot to reset the issue number when January rolled around; along about August, someone finally noticed we were about to put out "week number 85" of the previous year.....

A paltry five days?!? Phiff, that's nothing.

It probably would've, but it's also harmless and so, basically, what the hell, why not.

Not to be the fun-hater, but the answer seems fairly obvious. It undermines the idea of the queue. It kind of screws with any kind of guidelines.

If the idea behind the queue was to allow moderators to deal with ankle-biter stuff without having everything become a meta, then that's how it should be used.

Contentious topics are throttled for the purpose of holding them until staffing levels allow for moderator input. Lulzy post obviously also get caught up in the queue (which is fine). So which ones don't get posted? Which ones get dealt with without seeing the gray?

I'm really not trying to do any rules lawyering, but there's really nothing here requiring community input.

If the idea behind the queue was to allow moderators to deal with ankle-biter stuff without having everything become a meta, then that's how it should be used.

It's primary purpose is to let us defer stuff that's gonna be problematic until we have the staff resources to dig in, and to a degree to let us stop cold stuff that should never ever have been submitted before it goes up instead of closing/deleting it after the fact.

Handling stuff that can be just-contact-form stuff via the contact form is something we've done some of too, and will continue to do, but it's not something we're trying to be hard-as-nails about as some point-making gesture. Sometimes it's nice to have a little community chatter, or let a thing that might have been conspicuous to a few people be answered in public so folks who hadn't quite gotten to the writing-to-us stage can see that, oh, that did get noticed/addressed/fixed. If it's quiet and not looking like a problem to us, we might put it through and answer it here.

That's exactly as big of a deal as people choose to make of it. I feel like it's kind of a not-big one by default, and I like a little bit of low-stakes goofiness here sometimes as it takes the edge off, but I hear you if you don't have the same feeling about it.

Which is another way of saying, this isn't an ISO-9001 certified business where they have to act in perfect consistency all of the time, and never get the benefit of the doubt if they don't adhere strongly to their own policy. It's like in the workplace, sometimes I'm hunkered down and have to focus on a single thing and I might be irritable and unapproachable and will tell people as much if I start to show it. But that doesn't mean you may never approach me. I am not ISO-9001 certified

Jesus Fuck, Queue-Pedants get over yourselves. Holy hell. Anyway

He asked. I answered. I don't think there's anything to get over.

Admittedly, cortex was probably being rhetorical, but there was an actual answer.

Thing is, from my perspective, if the site policy is there's a queue to help throttle the load and to make things easier for those who work here, then seeing ones get through that probably shouldn't have seems inconsistent with the goal of the queue in the first place.

Or, take it back even further. The mission behind meta is sort of: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? It's a place for people to circumvent the establishment and bring their case directly to the people. It's a forum for questioning moderator decisions and seeking out further defining of policy and seeing if the community as a whole agrees with you.

On either of these ground this meta shouldn't exist.

Historically, meta has also been a steam valve and if the answer is just. "Occasionally people need a thread to fuck around in," that's perfectly fine as well. It's just at odds (in my mind) with the point of putting a queue in place.

This said, it's their workload that's affected. And that said, it is exactly as big of a deal as one wants to make out of it.
posted by cjorgensen at 7:28 AM on January 7, 2015

A thread like this may not really need time intensive moderation... otoh, it might lead to grocery shopping if the recipe schmoopy rears its head.
