MeFi Labs updates for 2014 January 1, 2015 11:24 AM Subscribe
As we pass into 2015, we've created year-in-review summary pages in the Labs area for the MeFi Stats 2014 and Popular Amazon Links in 2014.
Compared to the 2013 stats, numbers-wise, the MeFi Stats are very similar. There are some interesting points: the julybywomen tag burst onto the scene when it exploded last summer, tech questions are still neck-and-neck with Human Relations for most popular at Ask MeFi, socialmedia became a new popular tag, and for some reason 33,000 comments at FanFare seems nuts to me for such a new site.
The Amazon stuff is similar, but a little different. For 2014, mostly a mix of books on food and psychology, where 2013 was a lot of books about psychology and sports.

I had no idea we talked so much about Ukraine.

Oh, wait, that was new tags. OK, I guess I had no idea we'd just started talking about Ukraine and had so much to say.

Meetups were held in 25 states and the District of Columbia. (In before Mrs. Pterodactyl)
Also, I was reminded that I hadn't bought escabeche's book, so I remedied that.

86,774,487 unique visitors ...That is, just, I don't really know how to get my head around a number like that in this context.
posted by dg at 1:16 PM on January 1, 2015
We get the unique visitors number from Google Analytics. It's a term they use to describe a type of browser session they track. If you're interested in how they calculate it, there's a discussion about some of the Google Analytics terms at Webmaster Stack Exchange that might help explain it a bit more: What is the difference between Visitor and Unique Visitor?
Yeah, when the numbers get that big they don't mean much outside of comparing Google Analytics numbers. I just think of it as a nice reminder that a very large group of people who aren't members find and read MetaFilter all the time.

Yeah, I understood what the number represents but, as you point out, it's such a large number it really just means 'a very large group'. Even if you were to assume that every single person that visited the site in 2013 (81,681,269 unique visitors) also visited in 2014, that's just over five million people visiting who haven't been here before.

Okay, New Year's Resolution: Don't link to the wikipedia article about Sturgeon's Law. Although I think I only did it twice out of the 20 times... the other 18 were crap.

But somewhere between one-third and two-thirds of all traffic comes from bots and/or hijacked systems. Is this factored into such bold numbers? That's still 26-52 million unique visitors, which is still pretty damned impressive for what many (myself included) often feel is our own kooky corner of the internet.

Johnny Wallflower: Also, I was reminded that I hadn't bought escabeche's book, so I remedied that.
I didn't realize that book was by escabeche! I heard about it on Science Friday a couple of weeks ago and bought it, supposedly* as a Christmas gift for Mr. Wintersweet to read and put on his Books for Students to Borrow shelf in his shiny new office.
Anyway, poking around the stats: 46,356 comments flagged? Where's the "send chocolate to mods" button? (Dear past and present mods: If we're at the same meetup, I owe you chocolate and/or beer. Hold me to it.)
*Pfft, like I'm not going to read it.

WRT those Google Analytics numbers, I forgot my password and I read on my not-logged-in phone a lot, so I may have skewed the numbers. Sorry!

Thanks ChuraChura and thanks for changing it. heh, I didn't even notice my comment in there so oh wow that's really cool
I'm kind of blown away (as I am every year) by how many member accounts visit but how few of them comment in either the blue or green, and like desjardins wonder about the overlap. I don't know what would be considered a "normal" percentage for returning members, but it seems like an amazing retention rate, commenting or not.

3,312 members flagged problem posts and comments 46,356 times.
So all 46,356 flags are for problems? Or does "flagged" cover "flagged as fantastic" too?

That seems like a disproportionally small number of flaggers. Is it?
I guess what I mean is, how many users with I dunno say 10 or more comments across all sites were there? Is it say 20,000? They would make 3300 a small percentage....

Yes, those are all problems. We don't include fantastic flags in those numbers.

Ghidorah, I was just there and thought about it, but holidays. Plus, I was in Yokosuka and don't drive in Japan, which kind of means either a short evening in Tokyo for me or a very long one.

The trend line looks like this. (We don't have good data for 1999 and 2000 due to db mishaps and/or not tracking it.)
