Mefites' Choice 2014 winners, Week One December 8, 2014 8:29 AM Subscribe
It's that special time of year again (reminder: please vote for the posts you like mostest via the favorites button, and if you are so inclined, sign up on the Wiki to contribute a prize!), and the first week of the Mefite's Choice 2014 best posts extravaganza has come to pass, revealing to us that, with or without salad, Metafilter members love a good chuckle, as demonstrated by storybored's #1 winning post "JokeFilter" (What's the one joke you always tell when someone says "Tell me a joke."). In thanks for the all the hilarity, storybored wins anything from the Mefi Mall from me, up to $25*.
But wait, we are not single note folk, and apparently we also like to cry a bit, or maybe just bitterly regret a few impulsive internet forays from our wild and tempestuous cyberyouth... but luckily for us, and coming in at our #2 most favorited post, Renoroc rode to our rescue with the invaluable Doxxing Defense (A list of resources on how to scrub a lot of personal information off of the internet). Thanks, Renoroc! You will receive "some very special paper snowflakes" as a prize from deludingmyself.
Winning the Bronze for the first week's best posts at 3rd most favorited is roomthreeseventeen's post of Vulture's great interview with Chris Rock, “Wow. Let’s drive to another town. We should not sleep here.” Thanks and congratulations, roomthreeseventeen, you win a rubber duckie humidifier and a small tin of Tiger Balm from Alnedra!
Finally, I'd like to award my personal favorite for posts pertinent to my interests to dhruva for The true history of the Paisley design. I love patterns, and I love paisley, and I love origin stories and histories, and I loved that post. Your prize from me is anything from the Mefi Mall up to $10*.
Thanks to all of you for the great posts, and remember, Mefites: vote early and vote often as we enter week two!
* or if you prefer, an Amazon gift certificate for the same amount

Meh, note to self, don't move house first week of december just before flying over continents. See you lot on the other side, rah rah rah to the first week's winners!
My bad for simply favouriting the paisley post and not remembering to Fantastic it... thanks for the reminder, taz...

three single link posts to Print Magazine pieces and a reddit thread.
This is why we should be voting with the Fantastic flag not favorites. But I'm not bitter or anything...

Kudos and congrats to all!
I'll update the wiki to reflect this past week's winners and their prizes. There are a few new prizes that have been added in the past few days, for everyone's general information.

Not that I have a problem with single link posts. They are often my favorites. But a best post should be something that takes a bit of research or is off the beaten path. Idk, I'm probably overthinking it, and I could give my own prize so that would be a better solution than complaining. But still if you just check out what these actually are, these are fine single link posts to popular things, not best posts.

hmm, those were all fun and good posts, but didn't the mods used to pick the winners, rather than going purely by favorite count? I agree that what I think of as a prototypical "best post" isn't really going to dominate the favorites standings.

These are 'MeFites choice' awards, not 'mods choice'.

You can always sign up on the wiki to contribute a prize for the Pants award for posts what you like.

Flash forward 5 days:
Once again the pants award remains unclaimed. Won't someone please post some pants?

So having not done this before: should folks awarding prizes just memail folks receiving prizes to set things up? My coffee table is currently covered in snowflakes.

Way back in the day, yes. But this was back when there were one or two big prizes from mathowie himself. It was sort of exhausting to pore over all the posts (as much as I love looking them all over when I don't have to For My Job) and this way we get more of the community to participate in voting and in offering prizes.

Since not everyone can be an unironic Winner, I'll write a poor short story on a subject of the Person's choice for the Person who can make the Worst Post and have it not be Deleted. Judgment will be Qualitative and judged by the Judge, but Lack of Favorites will also be taken into consideration. Nominations by memail; at least two Entries must be received. Shipping, Snowflakes, and Paisley Pants not included. Nothing in this contest should be construed as encouragement to not Do Your Best, which is to say that your Worst Post must not be Intentional, to make the Prize sting even more. Cash value of short story 0.2 cents, at most.) The previous extraneous parenthesis is no longer extraneous by virtue of being Mentioned.

Congratulations to all the winners!
I admit I am disappointed that thequidnunckid did not have a post in the running so I could vote #1, but perhaps the lily has faded from that rose. One cannot help but wonder if the quidnunckid has grown into a quidnuncman, and forgotten the glorious goals of the rebellion (which I also cannot for the moment recall but are, no doubt about it, glorious!), to take his place along with the other complacent fat cat capitalists in this dog-eat-dog world. The heart grieves even as our shoulders strain, stooped beneath the heavy yoke of oppression, memories of our charismatic leader our only remaining solace in this dark time. The proud flames of the smoking Dragon Puppet that once so bravely heralded the coming Revolution lie smoldering.
Maybe, comrades, we ourselves have become that Dragon Puppet! Oh sad day, that dawns with our old puppet master overlords once again pulling the strings! The evil dictator, matthowie, jerks us to our feet only to watch us dance (pleasantly accompanied by the fascist, yet strangely hypnotic tunes of Commandant Cortex) for their depraved debauchery; their grand vizier, pb, travels back in time and rewrites the code of our lives in blood.
But wait! What's that? Amidst the desolate ashes of the dying dragon puppet, Something stirs, awakening. The faint flicker of hope flutters yet; the glowing ember lacks only the breath of a fanatic to fan the flames. So are the wispy tendrils of discontent stirred into...something. Something hot, mind you. Definitely a really hot metaphorical thingy...an inferno? Yes, an inferno!
Let's recap: a flicker of hope, the glowing ember deal, yada yada yada, and the wispy tendrils of discontent are stirred into--ta da--a raging inferno of renewed purpose!
Perhaps our fearless leader has not forsaken us after all! Could it be that he intends to sabotage our Enemy's regime from the inside out? Hidden In the midst of their forces, just another cog greasing the wheels (if that is what cogs do) of their oppressive machine, the master of disguise lurks--possibly in the form of a dying Sean Bean--quietly gathering the intel that will allow him to reclaim his rightful place far above we wearily toiling minions.
Perhaps at this very moment, comrades, our fearless leader the quidnunckid is building a new, improved Dragon Puppet of Destiny to vote #1!
Probably not, of course. Most likely not. But still, it could happen. That's the important bit to remember.
