Greasemonkey Deleted posts script not working October 15, 2014 10:54 AM Subscribe
I have just noticed my Mefi Deleted posts Greasemonkey has stopped working, is this anything to do with the new Mefi look or is it a greasemonkey thing? Anyone else noticed this?
it hasn't been working for a while, although I can't remember if it was before or after the new changes happened. (i'm still using the old theme)

There's an "applies to" field on the script that has 'http'. Change it to 'https' . I am doing this from memory.

Mine hasn't worked in a long time either on Chrome or Firefox. I miss it.

Not quite sure what you mean by this boo_radley, as I'm not too savvy with these sorts of things. How do I try this?

how many instances of http need to be changed to https though? any instance where it appears in the "include" thingy?

It's working for me in FF but I had to tweak it to work with the new theme. You could try loading it and seeing if it works for you. https://app.box.com/s/uc65toq2wmlydtu5gd8x

I can't figure out how to use that script to replace the one I already have installed, though.

Try opening up the old script. Delete everything in it, and paste in the new script. That was the only way it worked for me.

jeather, would you mind uploading the text of the version you're using in Chrome/Tampermonkey somewhere so we can see if it differs from the version that isn't working for the rest of us?

+1 does not work, FF, classic theme
Changing it to https wouldn't do much, would it? According to my address bar, MetaFilter's not that fancy.

No joy on FF with the script, bluesapphires, but I need it to work on the classic theme, not the new theme.

I said this in the other thread as well, but the deleted posts script works for me in Chrome through Tampermonkey. It does not work for me when directly installed into Chrome (which I think you can't do w/ the latest Chrome version, anyway).
It does look quite different w/ the new theme (example).

Thanks, jeather!
For others, pasting the text of the script jeather is using into TamperMonkey as a new script seems to work without any alterations or custom settings. (In case unclear, you'll want to copy/paste from the bottom box way down on that page so you don't end up copying the line numbers.)
I'm not sure how/why, but it looks like the version I had installed in TamperMonkey (which worked until a few weeks ago, I think), was an older version from 2009, while jeather's is a version from 2011. (Line 13 shows the version date. I didn't bother comparing the rest of the text once I noticed that.)
[Instructions, in case this helps anyone: Right-click on the TamperMonkey icon in Chrome and choose Options. Click the scroll icon near the upper right of the TamperMonkey configuration page to create a new script, highlight everything in the edit window, paste in the new script text, and click on the Save icon in the upper-right. You'll probably also want to click the green circle next to the older version of the script to deactivate it.]

Is there any similar help or ideas for greasemonkey? I really really don't want to switch to Chrome for everything if I don't have to.

Thank you jeather and nobody. Even this old dog can follow directions I suppose. I have no idea what I just did other than blindly copying and pasting some text that I was told to copy from the internet. Works now. Didn't work before.

Wait, I switched back to FF from Chrome because Chrome disabled scripts except from their 'app store'... has this changed? Do I now have to switch back to Chrome for my deleted posts script to work?? Ugh.

The way to get them to work in Chrome is to install Tampermonkey. This really startled me when it happened. I keep intending to go back to Firefox, but I got really annoyed at them when I tried to save preferences and then I lost them anyhow when my computer died, so I just switched to Chrome.
I still can't get the Scroll Tag to work, though.

Hmm.. I think I'll hold off switching for now, as scroll and quote scripts both still work for me in FF.
If anyone gets the deleted scripts to work in FF, let me know, please!

Oh wait, got it working now by following nobody's instructions but in greasemonkey for FF. Also added in the 's' the http for the includes.

Scroll tag works, for a while, then throws some cookie/header problem which I should eventually ask about but haven't because when I have the problem I cannot access any of Mefi.

The script doesn't just look different. It's totally broken.
I didn't make that post, I simply made the first comment on it.

Poffin Boffin and anyone else who wants to have a working deleted posts script - here is how to get the deleted posts script to work in FF.
1) Go to nobody's pastebin link
Scroll down, and at the bottom of the page you will see an area where you can edit the code. Click in the text area and select all of it and copy it - yes, even the masses of text at the bottom! (ctrl-A, ctrl-C will do it)
2) click on the little drop down triangle next to the greasemonkey icon and select "Manage User Scripts"
3) click on preferences on the deleted posts line
4) click "edit this script"
5) delete it all and paste the one in you copied from the pastebin. (ctrl-A, ctrl-V will do it)
6) click "save"
7) Click "OK to close the popup and update.
8) restart FF.
(You don't seem to need to change http to https, Maybe a mod could explain whether this is necessary or not)

Yeah, I did exactly that and unless there have not been any deleted posts going back 10 pages on the blue (that is where i got tired of scrolling) then it's still not working for me.

Well, that did work, sort of, though it does show the OP of the deleted post incorrectly (the first commenter is placed as the OP). That's similar to what I'm running into with the mefi navigator script - it labels as OP the person who comments first in the thread, not the person who posted it.

Do you have the most recent version of the script that the Great and Wonderful Plutor Himself™ posted here?
(This version still has the first commenter problem that rtha mentions, but works fine otherwise.)

I believe the http to https is only needed if you have turned on secure browsing (Experimental) in your preferences.
