General call to scriptmakers! September 30, 2014 5:45 PM   Subscribe

The new MeFi redesign seems fairly stable (like, pb's not going to do a massive rollback tomorrow or anything), and I'm sure there are a lot of people using various scripts which don't work any more. I've thought about asking individual script writers about updates, but I don't know which scripts have been abandoned, which are active, etc., plus I know that other people are using all kinds other scripts, so here's a general call to script users: If you're using a script and it no longer works, post it here! And a general call to script writers: If you think "Aw, I'm sure nobody cares about my ole script anymore", give the thread a look! If you see people posting that your script isn't working with the redesign, that means your script is still loved! Consider giving it an update, if you have the time!

I'll get to a HowlsOfOutrage Greasemonkey script and the matching Chrome extension update when the site settles down. Ehh, maybe a few days or a week. Presumably the HTML/DOM isn't significantly modified and it's a small tweak to the script and the extension, but it seems clear that there is something other than CSS changes going on if they're breaking.

Don't know about Nancy's or diediedead's status, but then I'm not looking at the MetaFilter revisions until they officially roll out to the unwashed masses in, hmm, less than a day if I heard right. Same time period to mod it as above, all else being equal.

I haven't heard about anything else I've worked on for MetaFilter in literally years, so that should cover it from here.

Hey everyone. I have a slightly modified version of the scroll tag script that you can try out. Here's the dropbox link. Note that using this version will make the pointer point to the wrong place for old-themed pages.

If you have chrome, you can open the extensions page, and drag and drop the file onto it, enable it, and disable the old plugin. If it works, great! If not, reset it back. The only fix I applied is to align the pointer with the start of comments based on the new header size.

but I don't want to, like, make that one change and put a new script up somewhere and assume de facto ownership of the script. So now the information is someone else's problem.

Hey, thanks for the prompt, Bugbread.

As phunniemee mentioned above (thanks, phunniemee!), the MeFi Recent Activity border o' rainbows script should still work with the Modern theme, in both modes. Let me know if you run into issues.

For box and anyone else using the hedgehog comment pointer script with the Modern theme: there's a super easy change you can make to get our hedgehog friend to come back, if you're comfortable editing the script file: Remove the negative sign from the "z-index" style.
i.e.
- Search the hedgehog script for: z-index: -10;
- Delete the "-" character in front of the number to change it to: z-index: 10;

I tested this with Modern and Modern Dark Mode and it worked fine on both (no change needed if you're using the Classic or Plain themes).
*Note: There may be a z-index conflict with the Scroll Tag marker once the Scroll Tag script is fixed for the Modern theme; if so, I'll take another look then if needed.

I know that the video fishy icon script isn't playing nicely with the Modern theme, either. I took a look briefly last week and that one isn't as simple, so I'll investigate further when I get some more time. (I promise! It's just been a hectic few weeks recently.)

Good news from here. The HowlsOfOutrage Chrome extension works with the Modern theme without modification. Almost as good news: after modifying problematic code, the HowlsOfOutrage Greasemonkey script now works with MetaFilter Modern.

Continuing in the good news vein, both the diediedead Greasemonkey script, and the Nancy Chrome extension work OK without modification.

The Greasy Fork site for Greasemonkey user scripts respository looks to be the heir apparent to the now-defunct userscripts site. I have uploaded the Modern theme friendly revised HowlsOfOutrage script there. For completeness sake, I also uploaded the Diediedead script.

Please let me know if you have any problems with the new, or old, themes using the scripts or the extensions.

On a related note to the discussion: while I was working, I created a proof of concept Greasemonkey script that pulls profile pictures from user pages, and displays an (arbitrarily sized) 64x64 thumbnail before a member's name in the post. (Much of the code and logic is shared with the two scripts mentioned above, so I built it when I was testing and basically farting around on the site.)

It actually looks kind of cool, but there is a big problem. For each unique user in a topic, their profile page must be accessed once. If there is a topic with 100 messages, and 50 unique users participating, the script results in 50 extra page accesses per view, which is both excessive and abusive. Of course, you aren't going to overload Amazon's AWS hosting services, but it can potentially run up hosting bills and bog down local performance.

A ray of hope is that it looks like there may be a dependable link pattern of profile page pictures stored on AWS. If there is, the script may yet be viable because it need only pull the user's picture link directly from storage using the pattern, rather than loading each profile page and ripping the picture information from there. I'll look into it a bit more and see what's up. Or hey, maybe another site upgrade with pix is coming, or a script author is already on it.

Hokay, I fixed a problem with favorites not showing up on the main post and I successfully tested it, using Classic theme, on all 8 MetaFilter subsites supporting favorites (actually the previous version worked with one or two already because the MetaFilter site internals aren't 100% consistent). I also spot-checked a couple of subsites with the Modern theme.

I updated the Greasy Fork Greasemonkey version of the HowlsOfOutrage script, and submitted an update to the Chrome Web Store for the HowlsOfOutrage extension, which should auto-update all Chrome users, eventually. I don't know if Greasemonkey auto-updates scripts. I do know Greasemonkey now says it supports auto-updates, but I'm not clear on the circumstances and requirements, so you might need to manually install the update from the Greasy Fork site.
posted by mdevore at 7:15 PM on October 3, 2014 [1 favorite]

Following up, I have uploaded a new Greasemonkey script called picMF to the Greasy Fork site. This script shows profile pictures of users (if any) in their posts to the left of their user name, immediately following the "posted by" text. The image is a 64x64 size thumbnail, but if you hover over the thumb, it will expand to a 256x256 image.

The script gives each image one second to load as it meanders down the message list, which should be long enough for most people, without pausing too long to pop the images. Extended server or connection delays may cause images not to load unless they are already cached in the browser (i.e. previously loaded).

If you want a larger or smaller image, you can change the lines:

var theWidth = "64px";
var theHeight = "64px";

to the value you prefer. Yes, this is CSS, so you can use % or other valid measure. I don't recommend "100%" unless you want huge blow-ups of everybody's picture, but whatever floats your boat. If you want to change the hover zoom size, change the lines

var zoomWidth = "256px";
var zoomHeight = "256px";

in the same manner. If you don't like zooming, just set the lines to the same value as the first two and the zooming, while it technically still present, won't look any different.

If you don't know how to edit a Greasemonkey script (it's dirt simple to do, really) and want to change the script, drop me or your own go-to Greasemonkey author a note.

This script version shouldn't hammer the server because the images are directly loaded and then cached in the browser after the initial load, not to mention whatever levels of caching are likely present on the hosting end. I guess if you browse in incognito mode every time you access MetaFilter, and seek out huge discussions to constantly refresh, you might bang the server a bit, but you'd do that anyway what with all the dynamic loads, database accesses, and various bits of site magic going on already.

A final caveat: this script depends on profile pics living at a certain location on the host server. If that location changes in the future, and it very well might, then the script will fail, guaranteed. But it works for now, so make merry.
posted by mdevore at 2:24 AM on October 4, 2014 [2 favorites]

I wish I understood how scripting works...I can slog through and change a "s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/mefi.profile" to a "s1-lundy.amazonaws.com/mefi.profile" if need be, but I can't wrangle anything more than that.

Like, say, just for theoretical example, moving the image to the left of the "posted by" part, or putting a placeholder image, like the MeFi logo, etc., for users without profile pics. You know, theoretically.

Like, say, just for theoretical example, moving the image to the left of the "posted by" part, or putting a placeholder image

Changing the image to before the "posted by" is pretty simple due to the fortunate fact that it's in the same branch of nodes. You just need to reach back to the parent node and twiddle it a bit. Change the lines:

y.insertBefore(document.createTextNode(" "), y.firstChild);
y.insertBefore(x, y.firstChild);

to

y.parentNode.insertBefore(document.createTextNode(" "), y.parentNode.firstChild);
y.parentNode.insertBefore(x, y.parentNode.firstChild);

Alternatively, you can wait and I'll put in next version.

A placeholder image can be done in two ways: either point to a known link of the image you want to use, or create an image and encode it into the script as raw data. The problem with the first approach is I don't see a handy MetaFilter logo to point to. The problem with the second approach is that I can't create a pleasing graphic to save my life, and if the image is higher than minimal resolution, the raw data is big. Like really big. Like hundreds or thousands of lines big, due to each image pixel having to be represented by multiple characters in the script data.

Hmm, maybe I can point the script to MetaFilter's favicon as a placeholder. I'll have to think a little more on that.

Here, at least, the AWS server location of images is currently holding steady to the value hardcoded in the script, although I have come up with an idea to assure a valid location by loading a single sacrificial profile page. I'll hold off on doing that unless it proves necessary.

Annoyingly, I have also discovered that on a main subsite page the site sometimes gives an extra/different class of "byline" to the post SPAN element, so the images may not trigger when that happens. I guess I'll need to upload a picMF update. Probably means I need to update the other scripts, too. Bah.

sometime this weekend while I have a bit of free time left....

Mdevore, thanks, that tweak did the trick, and is much gentler on my delicate eyes. As for the placeholder, I'm thinking the little faceless featureless icon that appears at the top right of any page (right next to the search bar) when you've scrolled down a bit. This one.

Version 2.0 of picMF is up on Greasy Fork's site, with changes based on user feedback. All previous comments apply except where they conflict with the new.

The profile picture has been moved to before the "posted by" text.

There is a placeholder image embedded in the script for comments and posts by users without a profile picture.

I fixed a problem where pictures might not show up sometimes on a main site screen (the all posts view).

The delay before popping a picture has been changed from 1.0 seconds to 1.4 seconds. I caught a couple of profile pictures not loading on that mongo huge MetaTalk thread about the redesign, and the extra wait brought them in. I suspect that this issue is highly dependent on connect/throughput speed, server load, and size of thread, but 1.4 seemed a reasonable compromise between fixing the edge cases I saw, and waiting too long to show the pictures. The delay can be manually modified to personal preference by changing the line

var secondsToLoad = 1.4;

to a higher or lower number. Two or even three seconds is an alternate suggestion, but reader impatience is highly prevalent in netland.

Generally if you do see a lot of placeholders that aren't correct due to slow loads (i.e. there is a profile picture), if you refresh the page, it will pick them up. This is not a license to bang on the refresh key, merely a reminder that the more you use the script, the more pictures should be cached in the browser for immediate viewing.

Is it possible to make picture loads completely event driven so that they will always (eventually) load or hit server timeout? Yup, but it's a pain in the butt to figure out all the supporting niceties, and I'm not doing it until I have to. Fixed instead of variable wait time also has it advantages for the reader.

And I'm done. For a while, anyway.

Not fancy at all, but I edited the Better Contrast I had installed to get it at least functional with dark mode. I put it up here at Greasy Fork (I hope that's okay with b0at--the old version is listed as public domain here). It looks a little goofy because the header and footer both look crazy bright, but the darker backgrounds make reading the thread so much easier for me.

And thanks for the tweak to Multifavorited Multiwidth, sillygwailo. I changed that locally and it works much better now.

RE: MultiFavorited_MultiWidth

On my version, this line was slightly different:
commentNode.style.marginLeft=''+(70-((favCount/2)+1))+'px';
Removing it completely helped, but made the left alignment vary depending on the number of favorites. Instead of commenting it out, if I change the 70 to 35 everything lines up properly (like it used to).
commentNode.style.marginLeft=''+(35-((favCount/2)+1))+'px';

GraphFi should be working correctly in Dark Mode now – I pushed some changes today to the way background colors are inherited.
