Repo Man might be fun.

Hmmm, good question. I guess it would all depend on what sort of cult movies we're going to watch. Famous ones, obscure ones, "so bad their good" ones, controversial ones, midnight movies? And then how available should they be? Are we looking to for things we've already seen or stuff that's new to most everyone who isn't, well, me? Just for fun, here's my list of stuff readily available on youtube we might consider:
John Waters' Mondo Trasho
Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Traffic
The "spiritual sequel" to Animal House Up the Creek
Better Off Dead?
The Tom Hanks "classic" Mazes and Monsters
The laugh-a-minute extravaganza that is THREADS
Perhaps some MST3K caliber cultness with The Amazing Mr. No Legs?
Todd Haynes' outlaw artpiece Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story
Or, you know, whatever. I'm down either way.

And Lebowski may be better known than most, but if fans do things like hold "[Movie name]-fests," I think that qualifies you for cult status. No one does "Clear and Present Danger-fest."

You want CULT? You want The President's Analyst...
Christmas 1967, James Coburn, after two successful 'Flint' spy movies stars in a spy spoof where he is NOT the spy - he's a Freudian psychiatrist recruited to do top secret sessions with the Chief Executive. The top spy is played by comedian Godfrey Cambridge whose relationship with a Russian agent is better than with anyone in the OTHER U.S. agency (they ended up having to overdub references to the FBI and CIA after the real agencies raised a stink). The President's Analyst himself succumbs to his own fears (my favorite line in the film: "I'm NOT paranoid, you really ARE all spies!") and goes AWOL, resulting in satirical brushes with various pieces of '60s culture, only to discover who is the MOST POWERFUL MOST DANGEROUS ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD. (I won't spoil it, but it's both hilarious AND a shockingly good prediction and Pat Harrington Jr. plays the Evil Boss).
Hard enough to acquire to qualify as Seriously Cult, but one of my all-time favorite comedies as well as a memory jogger for everything that was THE SIXTIES. Then-new movie critic Roger Ebert gave it 4 STARS but watch out, his review gives away my spoiler in the first sentence. (He WAS new then)

FanFare posts are open to commenting by everyone. You don't have to "belong" to the Cult Film Club if there's a particular movie they've selected that you want to discuss. I'm not likely to participate in Cult Film threads generally, but Edward Scissorhands is one of my favorite movies ever (although I didn't realize it was considered a cult film), so if that comes up I'll be in that thread.

Hausu is *nuts*. They show it on TCM once in a while when Robert Osborne goes on that dippy movie cruise, I reckon. Usually during the late Saturday night programming block when the white guy with dreads is running around the city putting up the posters with tendrils and it's like "I'm at Gramma's and she has cable with parental controls but I can watch TCM because it isn't blocked and drink her sherry WOOHOO!"

Personally I'd like Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself With Tea, Sir Henry at Rawlinson End or The Final Programme. Although they're possibly quite difficult to come by. And Tomorrow… is in Czech. And Sir Henry at one point involves the title character riding along on a unicycle painted with boot polish by way of a disguise, which might not suit modern times. And The Final Programme probably isn't that good, to be honest, but it's a Robert Fuest movie and I like it. So it would be just me, which is a very niche cult and not much of a club.

I'd say about 15% of these suggestions are cult movies. Edward Scissorhands? Come on y'all.
A cult movie is a movie that:
A. Never received wide release in the US or its country of origin.
B. Speaks for a marginalized population of some kind.
C. Contains odd or surreal non-narrative stylistic elements that defy linear cinema plot structure
D. Were the production of an outsider auteur or in general had a low budget
E. Aren't science fiction or horror or Western or some other more well defined genre.
Cf my opinion

FanFare posts are open to commenting by everyone. You don't have to "belong" to the Cult Film Club if there's a particular movie they've selected that you want to discuss.
I think bleep's request is based on the idea that virtually no one in a Horror discussion will be all "Ugh, I hate 'cult' films," while "I dislike scary movies" is a fairly reasonable objection to have. Therefore, reserving horror-cult movies for the HFC is a more inclusive solution than occasionally having a horror-cult movie in the CFC.

I didn't care for JCVH, personally. It was a little too self-consciously ironic. Even intentionally bad movies only work if they don't crack a smile. Like "Reefer Madness: The Musical" would be good. I have a suggestion. Let's alternate films from Cult Movies, the original book on the subject by Danny Peary (some of which have moved into the mainstream with movies from The New Cult Canon from the AV Club, with a few selections from their Old Cult Canon where it bridges the difference.
I'll select films based, in part, on availability -- it should be streaming through one of the major services. So, in this instance, based on recommendations, and based on its availability through Amazon Instant Video and iTunes, we will start with Alex Cox's classic 1984 LA punk adventure "Repo Man."
I'll post it to Fanfare a week from today, so let's get watching. The life of a cult film audience is always intense.

I am really excited to get my hands on that book, maxsparber, and to participate in this film club. I placed a library hold today and will get it by the end of the week. It looks like an excellent book.
It's a little silly how excited I am over this movie club but I also started watching Game of Thrones solely so I could participate in FanFare as it was rolled out, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that much.
Thanks for putting this together!

Almost anything Hal Hartley made but mostly more than anything, Trust.
Either that or Altman's Long Goodbye, which ranks right up there with Lebowski
at the pinnacle of the deconstructed-LA-noir genre.

REPO MAN
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Other possible future contenders:
- Harold & Maude
- Buckaroo Banzai
- Stranger Than Paradise
- Trust (or anything by Hal Hartley)
- Cane Toads: An Unnatural History
Also, I am in the "no scary movies" club or at least the "no gory movies" club.

Putting in a note so this thread will turn up in recent activity! And yes, Repo Man and Liquid Sky. (Love me some Buckaroo Banzai, too, but since it keeps turning up at my local Alamo, I'm starting to have a hard time thinking of it as cult.)

When people say Wicker Man they do mean the original classic cult film & not the abomination starring Nick Cage, yes?

gideonswann: "The laugh-a-minute extravaganza that is THREADS"
I discovered Threads through Metafilter. I was warned, but I watched it anyway. I thought that I would be immune to its horrors. I was completely wrong. That is the most fucked-up movie that I have ever seen or probably ever will see. The nightmares, complete with waking in cold sweats of terror and staying awake for the rest of the night, came hot and heavy for the first year or so after watching it. Now they only come once a month or so.
My (probably not very cultish) suggestions:

I keep telling y'all: THERE IS NOT ANOTHER WICKER MAN. There's the one with Edward Woodward and anything else you've heard is a dirty, dirty lie.

IMO they are both cult films for diametrically opposed reasons.

I was just reminded of my favorite cult film, "The Bed-Sitting Room". Here's John Landis talking over the trailer. (And the trailer by itself.) After a nuclear war, with 20 people alive in Britain, radiation is turning people into furniture. The main character is turning into a bed-sitting room. These five words should seal the deal: Marty Feldman is in it.

I see Stranger Than Paradise listed above. It is now "relevant" because of the recent Louie episodes using the same actress in the same role.
