How about notifications of proposed meetups? May 17, 2014 9:14 AM Subscribe
I have my profile set to receive notifications of IRL meetups within 100 miles, but I would also like to get notified about proposed meetups within the same distance. Who knows, maybe adding one more person can shift it from "proposed" to "let's do this thing."
I'm pretty sure we have those? I got one yesterday, I think.

I think they're sent out at midnight for everything posted that day so if this is very recent that may be why you haven't gotten a notification yet?

I think desjardins is just reacting to the fact that Wisconsin MeFites are super-antisocial and we never meet up, even though there are a lot of us, and is wondering "maybe I'm just not hearing about all the meetups...?" Nope. We just never meet up.

Okay, I'm feeling a bit crazy, but I'm pretty sure I don't get the Chicago/Madison ones until they're a thing. I don't expect Milwaukee meetups, although if anyone wants to hang with me and divined by radio they're certainly welcome.

I guess I'm not going to experience any culture shock on that front when we move there.

Okay, I found an example. This (Chicago) meetup never happened, and I never got an email about it.

desjardins, I'm not sure where you have location set exactly. Is it possible that 100 miles isn't quite enough to catch proposed Chicago meetups? When a meetup is set to Proposed for [city] it uses the longitude and latitude of the city center—not a specific venue. Is it possible the city center of Chicago is more than 100 miles away?

I don't think so, because I get emails about other Chicago meetups when the place/time/date has been decided.

Actually, speaking of this I have a bit of a different-colored IRL-notification pony -
is there a way to customize the IRL alerts we want to be told about based on certain criteria? Such as - well, a lot of the New York meetups are on weekdays, and I can't do weekdays, so I've found myself just ignoring the alerts anyway because "it's probably gonna be on a wednesday".
Can we pre-screen the IRLs in some way like that?

No, we don't have any mechanism for that. If you use a calendar app you could subscribe to the iCal feed for New York and take a look for weekends visually instead of relying on IRL alerts.

Yeah, it looks like 100 miles is well within range of your location for Proposed Chicago meetups. I can confirm that the alert did not go out to you on April 10th for that Meetup. I can also confirm that if the alert was going out today, you would be on the list for it.
So I'm not sure why that specific event didn't go out for you. Is it possible you temporarily disabled IRL alerts or MeFi Mail? If you turn either of those off you won't get notified.
If you check your MeFi Mail history, you should see some Proposed event alerts in there. Check these dates for the first few: 7/23/2013, 7/7/2013, 6/27/2013, 6/23/2013.

I think I solved the mystery. IIRC, I temporarily removed the location from my profile. Maybe there haven't been any proposed events within my range since I re-entered it? (I thought this was several weeks ago, but maybe not. Is there any way to tell when I modified my profile?)
Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon. pb, I owe you a six pack.

No, we don't track profile changes. Keep an eye on proposed Chicago meetups, let me know if you don't get them, and I'll take another look. No six pack required!

Just a heads up: the vast majority of Chicago meetups launch as "confirmed", as we generally enjoy scheduled, repeating events. We generally only see "proposed" events once every couple of months.
