Can't readd posts to Recent Activity? May 5, 2014 7:14 PM Subscribe
I made a comment on the Fannibal thread, then after a while I removed it from my Recent Activity. I just made another comment there yet the post isn't showing up on Recent Activity again. Bug or feature? (I've done the clearing cookies and logging in/out thing, no dice. On Dolphin for Android.)
(on a side note: the checkbox for "this needs community input" doesn't actually show up on the same browser - you can click on it but the borders blend into the background)

I think things stay removed from RA unless you specifically put them back. Even if you recomment. You can go to the Manage Post Removed From Recent Activity page and restore them manually.
the checkbox for "this needs community input" doesn't actually show up on the same browser
I'm not sure what this means, could you phrase it in a different way?

ah, didn't know about that link, thank you!
re checkbox: I didn't see a checkbox next to "this post needs community input"; all I saw was a blank space the same colour as the background. For a moment I thought there was some sort of error, but then I was able to tap on the space and a checkmark would show up.
So instead of
[ ] this needs community input
it's
this needs community input
does that makes sense?

Yep, thanks for the explanation. I'll check that out in Dolphin/Android and see if I can duplicate it.

speaking of recent activity problems, the "posts since last viewed" count on this thread has been broken for me. the threads Matt started work perfectly, as do the threads on every other subsite... but somehow just that thread is broken. I can view it several times and go back and it'll still say 49 new, then reset to to some random higher number or even the total count of the thread.
And yes i'm aware that the count doesn't transfer between machines, etc. It's just totally glitching out on the same machine with the same cookies only on that thread, and i've noticed it since it got posted.

The counts on that thread are checking out ok for me. Have you tried completely shutting down your browser and opening it back up? Have you tried a different browser? Tried clearing cookies?
There could be a glitch on our end with the new site. I'm just not spotting it with a quick check.

happened on my work machine(win7/chrome) and my laptop(macbook/mavericks/safari). i noticed the glitch at home in the morning, in that it was showing every comment as new, despite the fact that i had posted and browsed the thread several times... then when i went to work i expected it to do that, but it just kept resetting to odd random amounts or all of them again.
I quit and reopened safari on the mac, and fully relaunched chrome on my workstation since it needed to update anyways. Still weirding it up.

Are you running any MetaFilter-specific browser extensions or add-ons? Any Greasemonkey scripts?

divabat, I'm not seeing the checkbox problem in Dolphin 10.3.1 on Android 4.4.2. I tried both the default and plain theme and in mobile and standard view. It shows up as a grey checkbox in all of the above.
We're not doing any unusual styling there—it's a pretty standard checkbox. Maybe a glitch with an earlier version of Dolphin? I'm not sure.

as this has become the minor problems thread, i am unable to do any new favourites, i keep getting the "the page is still loading, please wait to add favourites" pop-up, even with all scripts and styles disabled, even on browser restart. i'm using firefox 11 on win7.

Any extensions though, specifically NoScript or AdBlock?

Yeah, sounds like the googleAPIs script isn't being loaded, elizardbits.

Nope, not at all. Especially on the work machine, which is just running vanilla chrome with nothing but adblock added to it.
If i look now(couldn't find a cute way to show i had JUST loaded that page now, not refreshed) it says there's 61 new comments, and i just replied to the thread like less than 5 minutes ago.
every other thread i've been active in today shows up normally.

Your reply time doesn't enter into how the new comment counts workâmaybe that's where the confusion is. The new comment counts are sort of a "best guess" based on your last visit time. Here's a comment from a while back where I explain how it works.

Not noscript but yes to adblock! Is there something I should add to the allowed filter?

googleapis.com and cloudfront.net need to be added and you should be good. Maybe something from Amazon, but I'm not sure.

elizardbits, try clicking these links: 1, 2. Each link should bring up JavaScript in your browser. If they both load properly for you try reloading the site again.
If you can't load one of these links, it means a necessary background file is not loading for you for some reason. It could be a network error, but most likely it's a browser extension blocking one of them for some reason.
I'd try another browser if you have one available. If it works in a new browser, that narrows it down to an issue with your preferred browser and you can focus on that. If it doesn't work in a new browser, that might indicate an network issue. And you can focus on troubleshooting that. For example, do you have any anti-malware or anti-virus software running that could be blocking things from loading?

hm, interesting, the second link loads fine but the first one says "problem loading page, file not found" in firefox. both work perfectly in chrome. the problem persists in ffx even with all add-ons disabled after a browser reload.
looks like i am sticking to chrome for now i guess
thx guys!
