Gamefilter: The Refiltering April 24, 2014 6:03 PM Subscribe
Gamefilter: The Refiltering. I've refined, rebuilt and relaunched Gamefilter, and I'd like to invite you all to stop by and enjoy both the gaming and the filtering!
Gamefilter is meant to be the 'missing piece' in the MefightClub constellation of sites -- MefightClub itself is a semi-closed forum, FullGlassEmptyClip is the all-singing, all-dancing group blog for longer form public writing and stuff, and Gamefilter is the place where the links live.
But Gamefilter is not just for MefightClub members only! Registration is open to all for the low low cost of zero dollars, and the benefits of membership are manifold, including but not limited to ponies, unicorns, and the love and respect of your peers.
I launched GFi a few years back, but it was a bit of a chewing-gum-and-scotch-tape affair, and my coding skills didn't help matters, and it just became too hard to maintain and bugfix (and it wasn't getting as much traction as I might have hoped). So I mothballed it for the duration back in late 2012.
Although it might seem like a relaunch right now is a response to the recent news that Matt and co are considering a future dedicated area for gaming-related stuff here at the mothership, that news came when I was about midway through rebuilding the site, and so I decided to soldier on regardless. My hope is that even if something official that's gaming-related appears on MeFi eventually, GFi will have developed a life and active userbase of its own that will complement that.
You can visit and use the site without membership, but access to a lot of the features (including the ability to post and comment) is unlocked if you sign up. Quite a few Mefites are already members from the previous incarnation, and if you're one of them, all your posts and comments are still there from before. If not, I encourage you to swing by and have a look, and if you want to, sign up for the previously mentioned unicorns and lollipops and fun times.
It's effectively a Metafilter clone in function if not form -- public sharing of links to interesting gaming-related stuff and talking about those links is the core mission. There's lots of communityish tools and toys too, once you sign up -- profile pages and messaging and activity streams and favorites and all of that good stuff. And achievements, because who doesn't like arbitrary encouragement of otherwise value-neutral puttering about? No me, that's not who!
So: please do come by and have a poke around, and let me know here or at MFC or there via public @messaging or private messaging if you have any problems or suggestions, and I'll try and help out. Although it's basically feature-complete for the moment, as with all MFC sites, I'll be working on it on an ongoing basis (and am even now wrestling with optimal caching and CDN stuff), and I have plans for lots of cool things in the future.
Share and enjoy!

You will be granted the gift of Universal Language (but the DLC packs cost way more than they should).

If it sounds like creepy clicky noises I would clear all the trees from around your house and bolt the doors and windows.

Hey stavros, my post has an edit button that doesn't seem to do anything?

Thanks -- the edit button should be hidden (but it's good that it doesn't do anything if you're not an admin), so that's a bug report (which should now be fixed). Best to message me at GFi itself with that kind of stuff, though, maybe.

Account creation seems broken. Clicking the Complete Sign Up button starts loading a page and hangs.

Having some server load issues I've been working on diagnosing, but we've had a bunch of successful signups today, so I'm pretty sure it's working OK code-wise. Can you try again and let me know how it goes?

I read a neat essay about games and/as work recently and was thinking of posting it to MeFi over the weekend -- I could post it here too via my (slightly dusty) MeFight account?

Wow, it looks nice! I don't have space in my head (or schedule) for games this decade, but my kids do so I think I will be lurking here. :7)

Looks great! Is this just a forum for video games, or can we talk table-top games too?

Thanks stavrosthewonderchicken. I saw mention of a some MeFi-related Minecraft server type thing around. Is there such a thing and is it associated with Gamefilter? And where would such a thing be found IP-address-wise? ;)

You'd need a separate account for GFi, but yeah, sure thing!
can we talk table-top games too?
Games is games, I reckon, so non-video-type-game links are most welcome, just as discussions about them are over at MFC.
Is there such a thing and is it associated with Gamefilter?
We have a few Minecraft servers run by MefightClub members -- feel free to ask folks at MefightClub about it. I'm not sure about the current status of any of them, but you're probably looking for the Aporkalypse (a satellite of MFC itself, run by toomuchpete -- looks like it's down at the moment, so I'm not sure what's happening there).

Looks really nice. Now I wish I had time to play games (I'm going to make that Arkham Origins DLC happen this weekend, but it's a loner's special).

EDIT: nvm, toggled between tabs a bit and now it's gone.

Yeah, the close button on there is a little hinky. It's on my list to have a look at.

You are most definitely welcome. But I mostly just try to play genial host and make fun tools for other people -- without members of the broader MFC community to post and comment and stuff, it would all be for naught. So don't spare the love for Mefighters: they rock!

Nope, because your username is also your profile URL at gamefilter.net/yourusername. An umlaut would, I'd guess, fuck things up comprehensively.
Sorry about the underscore restriction, but it's a WP thing that is not easily (or at all, as far as I've been able to tell) work-around-able.

When Norman was about, Dinsdale Eideteker would go very quiet and his nose would swell up and his teeth would start moving about and he'd become very violent and claim that he'd laid Stanley Baldwin.

Hey everybody (or you know, everybody who still has this in their Recent Activity)! I'm running a game giveaway weekly for the next few months over at GFi, which is in no way a desperate attempt to bribe people to post more. Heh.
